SUMMARY:Breaking Surface
DESCRIPTION:In two screenings on August 4\, see the hit new Nordic survival thriller Breaking Surface (Sweden\, Belgium\, Norway\, 2019; dir. Joachim Hedén) at Scandinavia House! \nHailed as a “ticking-clock drama that keeps the momentum high throughout” (Third Coast Review)\, Breaking Surface follows half-sisters Ida (Moa Gammel) and Tuva (Madeleine Martin) as they set out a few days after Christmas on a winter dive in a remote part of the Norwegian coastline. Towards the end of the dive\, a rockslide traps Tuva under water; as Ida surfaces to call for help\, she discovers that the rockslide has struck above water as well — burying their equipment\, phones and car keys\, and cutting them off completely from any chance of outside rescue. As the frantic race for survival unfolds\, Ida is put to the ultimate test of character and forcefulness fighting to save Tuva\, exposing a fractured sisterhood with stakes beyond simple survival. (82 min. In Swedish & Norwegian with English subtitles) \n“A worthy representative of the fascinating world of genre films\, Breaking Surface shows us just how much the field has to offer in the way of formal sophistication”—Cineuropa \nTickets to this event must be purchased in advance online at the link above. Screenings will take place in Victor Borge Hall; ticket sales are capped at 80 per showing. Attendees are required to follow all Scandinavia House safety protocols\, including presenting a Vaccination Card at the front desk to remove masks during the program and observing social distancing rules in signage. Please read our full safety protocols here. \n \nAbout the Director\nJoachim Hedén (1967) is the writer and director of Breaking Surface. His other work includes the Tribeca Film Festival selection New York Waiting (2006) and Framily (2010). \nHe also directed the soccer comedy 10.000 Timmar (2014).

By early teens\, Alex has won the title of Ukraine’s best young composer twice\, as well as several international competitions in classical piano\, composition\, and improvisation. SUMMARY:Tove
DESCRIPTION:This July at Scandinavia House\, see the hit Finnish film Tove (Finland\, 2020; dir. Zaida Bergroth)\, based on the life of Moomins creator Tove Jansson! \nIn 1945 Helsinki\, the end of World War II has brought a new sense of artistic and social freedom for aspiring painter Tove Jansson. Modern art\, dizzying parties and an open relationship with a married politician have put her at odds with her sculptor father’s strict ideals; and when she meets theater director Vivica Bandler\, Tove’s desire for liberty is further put to the test as she finds herself immersed in an all-consuming love that she longs to have reciprocated. Meanwhile\, her creative endeavors are taking her in an unexpected direction as a side project based on the tales she once told to frightened children in bomb shelters rapidly takes on a life of its own; inspired by her own life\, the exploits of the Moomins soon bring Tove international fame and financial freedom\, with a daily comic strip\, a stage play\, and stories that delight readers around the world. \nAs Tove begins to discover her artistic identity\, she must break away from unrequited love in order to be free. A captivating drama\, Tove portrays the iconic talent’s creative energy and her turbulent search for identity\, desire and freedom. (117 min. In Swedish with English subtitles.) \n“Tove beguiles audiences into the world of its characters”—Variety \nTickets to this event must be purchased in advance online at the link above. SUMMARY:Nordic Book Club: Long Live the Post Horn! by Vigdis Hjorth
DESCRIPTION:Read and discuss Scandinavian literature in translation as part of our Nordic Book Club\, now online! Each month we select a novel from some of the best Nordic literary voices. Discussions have typically taken place the last Tuesday of the month at Scandinavia House but will now be taking place bi-weekly as an online meeting. \nBook club participants will all appear online at the start of the meeting when they log in so that they are able to take part in the conversation. For participants who would prefer not to be visible onscreen\, see an easy tutorial online here on how to set a profile image that will appear onscreen instead. \nOn June 8\, we’ll be discussing the new book Long Live the Post Horn! by Vigdis Hjorth\, out now in translation by Charlotte Barslund from Verso Fiction. \nEllinor\, a 35-year-old media consultant\, has not been feeling herself; she’s not been feeling much at all lately. Far beyond jaded\, she picks through an old diary and fails to recognize the woman in its pages\, seemingly as far away from the world around her as she’s ever been. But when her coworker vanishes overnight\, an unusual new task is dropped on her desk. Off she goes to meet the Norwegian Postal Workers Union\, setting the ball rolling on a strange and transformative six months. \nHailed as “a brilliant study of the mundane\, full of unexpected detours and driving prose” (New York Times Book Review) Long Live the Post Horn! is an existential scream of a novel about loneliness (and the postal service)\, written in Vigdis Hjorth’s trademark spare\, rhythmic and cutting style.
