SUMMARY:Virtual Book Talk — The Bell in the Lake with Lars Mytting
DESCRIPTION:On October 1\, Norwegian author Lars Mytting joins us for a virtual book launch event on The Bell in the Lake\, an engrossing epic novel and #1 bestseller in Norway about a young woman with a mystical fate\, available in English translation from The Overlook Press beginning September 29. \nFor as long as people can remember\, the stave church’s bells have rung over the isolated village of Butangen\, Norway: cast in memory of conjoined twins\, the bells are said to ring on their own in times of danger. When in 1879\, young pastor Kai Schweigaard moves to the village\, young Astrid Hekne  sees a way into a much yearned-for modern life on the arm of the new pastor\, who needs a tie to the community to cull favor for his plan for the old stave church\, with its pagan deity effigies and supernatural bells. But when the pastor makes a deal that brings an outsider — a sophisticated German architect — into their world\, the village and Astrid are caught between past and future\, as dark forces come into play. \nLars Mytting\, bestselling author of Norwegian Wood\, brings his deep knowledge of history\, carpentry\, fishing\, and stave churches to this compelling historical novel\, an international bestseller sold in 12 countries. With its broad-canvas narrative about the intersection of religion\, superstition\, and duty\, The Bell in the Lake  is an irresistible story of ancient times and modern challenges. \n\n\nPlease send audience questions ahead of the discussion to info@amscan.org. Select questions will be chosen for a Q&A following the conversation. Registration is required; please sign up at the link above. \nBooks will be available in a new translation from Norwegian from Deborah Dawkin beginning on September 29 from The Overlook Press; visit the website to learn how to purchase the book. \n“Mytting has created something beautiful\, a perfect evocation of a place and a culture\, a melding of old Norse tradition with the encroaching modern world…every element of the setting and those who inhabit it is crafted with consummate skill. This first in a trilogy will have readers eagerly awaiting the next by this accomplished author.”—Booklist \n“Evocative…a beautiful example of modern Norwegian folklore”—The Guardian \n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR\n\n\n\nLars Mytting\, Norway’s bestselling novelist\, is the author of Norwegian Wood. His books\, which have sold more than 1 million copies in 19 languages\, have won the Norwegian Booksellers’ Prize and have been shortlisted for the prestigious International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award\, among others. \n\n\nThe Bell in the Lake has been sold in 12 countries and was a #1 bestseller in Norway. \n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

Gemenskap och oberoende i det moderna Sverige (2006\, pocket 2009\, revised and extended edition 2015\, German translation 2016) – co-written with Henrik Berggren. \n\n\nIn 2010 he returned to Sweden where he now serves as professor oh history and civil society studies at Ersta Sköndal Bräcke University College where he in recent years have focused on projects concerning state/civil society relations\, individual right\, the juridification of politics\, the Nordic model and the Swedish social contract\, and a comparative project on children’s rights regimes in Sweden\, France\, and the United States. SUMMARY:Equity\, Inclusion\, and Immigration in Nordic Countries – Virtual Panel
DESCRIPTION:*This event will take place online as a Virtual Panel.* \n\nNordic countries are often seen as models of equity\, equality\, and social justice. But what are the ways that the Nordic countries are approaching the inequalities that they still face? In this virtual panel\, four distinguished guests — Swedish hip-hop artist Jason “Timbuktu” Diakité\, Swedish author Jonas Hassen Khemiri\, Danish author Simon Pasternak\, and Swedish-Ethiopian chef and restaurateur Marcus Samuelsson — will join us for a discussion on recent cultural contributions and voices who continue to discuss inequality both in the Nordic countries and the U.S. Topics will include race and diversity in the Nordic context\, their centrality to conceptions of equality in the Nordic countries\, the everyday inequalities that have surfaced and approaches to their mitigation\, and how immigration to and within the Nordic countries has complicated the discussion. \n\n\nPlease send audience questions ahead of the discussion to info@amscan.org. Select questions will be chosen for a Q&A following the conversation. Registration is required; please sign up at the link above. \nThe discussion will later be available to stream on YouTube. \n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Virtual Cinema–Army of Lovers in the Holy Land
DESCRIPTION:$12 \n**50% of proceeds will support ASF + Scandinavia House** \n\n\nVirtual Cinema tickets will be available for sale beginning September 11; please check back then to purchase. \n\nBeginning September 11\, Scandinavia House will host a virtual cinema presentation of the new documentary Army of Lovers in the Holy Land.   \nThirty years after the hit Swedish queer disco-pop band Army of Lovers launched into international stardom\, its frontman\, Jean-Pierre Barda\, embarks on a new chapter when he uproots his existence to move from Sweden to Israel. In this new documentary examining home\, identity\, family\, and the pull of Aliyah (immigration to Israel)\,  director Asaf Galay joins Barda alongside his journey at the age 50\, while Army of Lovers (a blend of ABBA\, the B-52s and performance art) continues to rock pride celebrations and underground club parties with its mix of high camp\, daring music videos and a motto of “More is more\, less is a bore.” \nExploring why Barda’s Jewish identity has pulled him towards a change — even while co-members Alexander Bard and Dominika Peczynski remain his true family\, after a lifetime spent in Sweden — the documentary follows the salt-and-pepper-haired charmer as he gives up his luxurious apartment and fashionable clothes to settle into rollerblading through the streets of Tel Aviv\, meeting passionate Israeli men\, and enjoying hummus in the backyard. But is that enough for a former pop star? \n\n\nIn looking at the seeming paradox of Barda’s identity — flamboyant\, philosophical and religious all at once — the film explores what it means to never doubt oneself. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE DIRECTOR\n\n\n\nAsaf Galay is an acclaimed international film director\, with a passion for stories on Jewish subjects that illuminate the human condition. SUMMARY:The Family Clause — Virtual Book Talk with Jonas Hassen Khemiri
DESCRIPTION:*This event will take place online as a Virtual Event.* \n\nJonas Hassen Khemiri\, the acclaimed author of Montecore\, joins us for a Virtual Talk to discuss The Family Clause\, a novel about a family on the verge of collapse\, which will be released in English translation beginning on August 25. Author Joshua Furst (Revolutionaries\, 2019) will moderate the discussion. \nPer a longstanding family agreement\, a grandfather has maintained his Swedish residency while living abroad by coming to stay with his son every six months. On this visit\, in his mind\, the son is a failure; the daughter is having a baby with the wrong man; and only the grandfather is perfect—at least\, according to himself. But over the course of ten intense days\, as relationships unfold and painful memories resurface\, the grandfather is confronted by his past\, while the daughter is faced with an impossible choice\, and the son attempts to write himself free. Can this family clause be renegotiated\, or will it chain the family to its past forever? \nThrough a series of quickly changing perspectives\, Jonas Hassen Khemiri evokes an intimate portrait of a chaotic and perfectly normal family\, deeply wounded by the death of a child and the disappearance of a father. \n“Strung together\, engrossing\, minute-by-minute passages become layered\, and character arcs grows steeper by degrees . . . Depicting his characters’ perceptions of one another\, and themselves\, Khemiri (Everything I Don’t Remember\, 2016) points to universal truths: in this and any family\, roles change over time\, and\, with any luck\, so do the people in them.” —Annie Bostrom\, Booklist \n\n\nPlease send audience questions ahead of the discussion to info@amscan.org. Select questions will be chosen for a Q&A following the conversation. Registration is required; please sign up at the link above. \nBooks will be available in a new translation from Swedish by Alice Menzies beginning on August 25\, 2020 from Farrar\, Straus and Giroux; visit the website to learn how to purchase the book. \nThis program is presented by The American-Scandinavian Foundation and The Embassy of Sweden in collaboration with the American-Swedish Institute in Minneapolis\, American Swedish Museum in Chicago\, American Swedish Historical Museum in Philadelphia\, The Consulate General of Sweden in New York\, and The Consulate General of Sweden in San Francisco . \n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR\n\n\n\nJonas Hassen Khemiri is the author of five novels\, six plays\, and a collection of essays\, plays\, and short stories. Among his many honors are the August Prize\, the highest literary award for Swedish literature; the Enquist Literary Prize; the Borås Tidning Award for Best Literary Debut Novel; and an Obie Award. \n\n\nHis novels have been translated into more than thirty languages\, and his six plays have been performed by more than one hundred companies around the world. He lives in Stockholm\, Sweden. The Family Clause will be published by Farrar\, Straus and Giroux on August 25\, 2020. \n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE MODERATOR\n\n\n\nJoshua Furst is the author of Short People and The Sabotage Café\, as well as several plays that have been produced in New York\, where for a number of years he taught in the public schools. SUMMARY:The Summer House by Philip Teir – Online Nordic Book Club
DESCRIPTION:**Nordic Book Club will take place as an online meeting** \n\nRead and discuss Scandinavian literature in translation as part of our Nordic Book Club\, now online! Each month we select a novel from some of the best Nordic literary voices. Discussions have typically taken place the last Tuesday of the month at Scandinavia House but will now be taking place bi-weekly as an online meeting. Register here to sign up for the meeting; registrants will receive a web link to where the meeting will take place. \nBook club participants will all appear online at the start of the meeting when they log in so that they are able to take part in the conversation. For participants who would prefer not to be visible onscreen\, see an easy tutorial online here on how to set a profile image that will appear onscreen instead. \n\n\nOn September 8\, we’ll be discussing The Summer House by Philip Teir\, which follows the family of Finnish couple Erik and Julia as they set out on holiday to a seaside house on the west coast of the country. Despite their initial happiness\, issues lying just below the surface endanger their trip from the start\, including Erik’s very recent job termination. With the arrival of Julia’s childhood friend Marika — along with her charismatic husband Chris\, the leader of a group of extreme environmental activists — those hairline fractures increasingly threaten to split open their very family foundation. In this finely-tuned story about life choices and lies\, about childhood and adulthood\, Philip Teir poses the question: How do we live if we know that the world is about to end? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Virtual Cinema – Out Stealing Horses
DESCRIPTION:$12 \n**50% of proceeds will support ASF + Scandinavia House** \n**The film release will be coordinated with a special video introduction by actor Liam Neeson and a Q&A with director Hans Petter Moland and Tomris Laffly.** \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBeginning August 7\, Scandinavia House will host a virtual cinema presentation of Out Stealing Horses\, based on the award-winning novel by Per Petterson\, Norway’s contender for the Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards.  \nIn November of 1999\, following the death of his wife\, 67-year-old Trond Sander (Stellan Skarsgård) has retired from Oslo to a small village in the east of Norway\, where he plans to wait out the end of the millennium in solitude. But his reverie is interrupted one winter night by a chance run-in with an acquaintance\, which evokes memories from a long-ago\, fateful summer in 1948 — spent in a simple wooden hut by the river with his much-admired father. Images of long afternoons in the forest with his close friend Jon\, rides on wild horses\, and hard work felling wood blur into a memory of carefree happiness\, but one fraught with the danger of impending events not quite in Trond’s control. For the summer of stealing horses and youthful adventures was also the summer of Trond’s first love; and one in which Trond’s father prepared him to carry the burden of a forthcoming betrayal. \n Filmed in the midst of a breathtaking landscape of mountains and rivers between Norway and Sweden\, Out Stealing Horses unfolds a tale of love and loss\, disappointment and guilt\, where oscillations between collaboration and resistance become an indelible part of childhood memory. Directed by Hans Petter Moland (Norway\, 2019) \nPlease note: customers who wish to cast the film to their TVs or require assistance should review Eventive’s FAQ and live chat support here: https://watch.eventive.org/help \n\n\nThe film release will be coordinated with a special video introduction by actor Liam Neeson and a Q&A with director Hans Petter Moland and moderator Tomris Laffly. Please check back to this page closer to the date for virtual ticket instructions and information on the special video event. \nImmediately following the film there will also be a pre-recorded discussion between Stellan Skarsgård and filmmaker Hans Petter Moland. This conversation is exclusive to Virtual Cinema and in-theater engagements. \nSpecial thanks to Royal Norwegian Consulate General in New York and Magnolia Pictures. \n“Sweeping and elegiac”—Variety \n“A highly accomplished meditation on life\, guilt and responsibility”—The Hollywood Reporter \n \n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE DIRECTOR\n\n\n\nHans Petter Moland (b.1955\, Norway) graduated from Emerson College. His film Aberdeen (2000) premiered in competition at Karlovy Vary\, where Ian Hart won the Best Actor Award\, and later won awards at festivals in the U.S.\, Milan and at the European Film Festival. DESCRIPTION:FRI—December 13—6:30 PM\n$12 ($7 ASF Members)\n154 min. In Swedish with English subtitles. \nIn this film directed by Liv Ullmann from a screenplay by Ingmar Bergman\, loosely based on the legendary Swedish director’s own experiences of adultery\, Faithless looks at an aging director named Bergman (Erland Josephson) as he conjures a character\, Marianne\, and imagines interviewing her about a life-changing affair. As Marianne begins her story\, we see the events as they unfold: happily married to the orchestra conductor Markus with a young daughter named Isabelle\, Marianne is close friends with the filmmaker David. When one day David proposes sleeping together\, Marianne refuses\, but soon finds herself growing attracted to him; and when separate opportunities bring both Marianne and David to Paris at the same time\, they begin an affair. \nAs the affair continues back home\, it becomes increasingly volatile and complicated by jealousy. And when their relationship is inevitably discovered by Markus\, leading to a bitter divorce and vicious custody battle\, its consequences have a devastating impact. \nSensitively and lucidly directed by Ullmann\, Faithless has a precision\, power\, and emotional weight worthy of Ibsen or Strindberg. (Sweden\, 2000) \n“With absolute faith in its own seriousness and that of its audience\, Faithless addresses the life of the mind\, and the erotic life\, with equal conviction – and searches the wound of existence unflinchingly. This is an unanswerably powerful film – a film for intelligent grown-ups.”—The Guardian \n“As luminous as it is shattering\, Faithless is complex\, challenging and richly rewarding\, and it glows with the kind of wrenchingly selfless portrayals that are the hallmark of the Bergman classics.”—Los Angeles Times \nABOUT LIV ULLMANN\nLiv Ullmann (b. 1938) is first and foremost known for her work as an internationally recognized and respected Norwegian actress. She made her acting debut on the theater stage as Anne Frank at the regional theater Rogaland Teater in 1957. Her acting-career has since encompassed countless leading roles on many international stages\, as well as in numerous film roles. Ullmann has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role twice (1973 and 1977)\, and has received over 40 other awards and accolades. She was widely acclaimed for her roles in Ingmar Bergman’s films\, which also opened the doors for her international career. \nAlso as a director Ullmann has worked in both stage and film productions. She made her debut as a feature film director with the award-winning Swedish production Sophie in 1992\, and has since directed another two feature films\, one film made for television\, and a documentary. The epic medieval drama Kristin Lavransdatter\, arguably Ullmann’s principal work as a film director\, premiered in 1995\, and was met with both critical acclaim and nearly 700\,000 tickets sold at the Norwegian box-office. The film had its international premiere at the Montreal World Film Festival\, where it was awarded the Special Grand Prix of the Americas. \nBesides directing for both stage and screen Ullmann has also continued her acting-career through the years\, although she has selected to play fewer roles\, and focus more on directing in later years. She has also written two best-selling books\, several screen- and stage plays\, and has devoted considerable amounts of her time as Goodwill ambassador to UNICEF. Ullmann is the recipient of numerous Norwegian and international awards and other accolades\, of both professional and civilian nature\, and has among other things been dubbed Honorary Citizen of Trondheim city and an Honorary Member of the Norwegian Actors Association. She has received both an honorary Norwegian National Film Award Amanda\, and the highest accolade an official industry body in Norway can bestow on a filmmaker; the Aamot statuette. In 1977 Ullmann was also appointed Knight\, 1st Class. \n\n\nLIV ULLMANN: A CELEBRATION\n\n\n\nIn celebration of Liv Ullmann\, recipient of the 2019 ASF Gold Medal\, Scandinavia House presents a retrospective of the acclaimed actress and director’s roles and work with leading auteurs. \nThe Wayward Girl\nWED—November 13—6:30 PM \nMiss Julie\nTHU—November 14—6:30 PM \nAn-Magritt\nSAT—November 16—2 PM \nThe Emigrants / Utvandrarna \nTUE—November 19—6:30 PM \nThe New Land / Nybyggarna\nFRI—November 22—6:30 PM \nScenes From A Marriage / Scener Ur Ett Äktenskap\nSAT—November 23—2 PM \n\n\nZandy’s Bride \nWED—December 4—6:30 PM \nThe Abdication\nFRI—December 6—6:30 PM \nKristin Lavransdatter\nWED—December 11—6:30 PM \nFaithless / Trolösa \nFRI—December 13—6:30 PM \n\n\n\nPURCHASE TICKETS\nPURCHASE SERIES PASS

SUMMARY:Kristin Lavransdatter – Liv Ullmann: A Celebration
DESCRIPTION:WED–December 11—6:30 PM\n$12 ($7 ASF Members)\n188 min. In Norwegian with English subtitles. \n\n\n\nIn the second film directed by Liv Ullmann (1995)\, based on the classic novel by Sigrid Undset\, Kristin is the daughter of a prominent landowner in medieval Norway\, who has grown up in harmony with the ideals of the time: strong family ties\, social pride\, and devout Christianity. Arranged to be married to the son of another landowner\, a violent attack by a neighbor and other conflicts lead her to seek refuge in a convent. There\, as she awaits her impending marriage\, she becomes passionately attracted to the knight Erlend Nikulaussonn; an accomplished seducer\, he too falls hopelessly in love. \n\n\nCrossing both convent walls and social boundaries\, their affair quickly becomes public\, and the innocent Kristin becomes the center of a scandal — rejected by her fiance\, subjected to her father’s fury\, and\, finally\, the victim of a murder attempt by Erland’s former mistress. As their relationship becomes increasingly caught up in local politics\, some of the country’s most dignified leaders attempt to persuade Kristin’s parents to allow them to marry. But what will their happiness cost? \n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT LIV ULLMANN\n\n\n\nLiv Ullmann (b. 1938) is first and foremost known for her work as an internationally recognized and respected Norwegian actress. SUMMARY:Zandy's Bride – Liv Ullmann: A Celebration
DESCRIPTION:WED—December 4—6:30 PM\n$12 ($7 ASF Members)\n97 min. In English. \n\n\n\nWhen the hardboiled late 19th-century rancher Zandy (Gene Hackman) decides to take a mail-order bride\, he isn’t especially interested in love; instead\, he wants a woman who can bear his child and aid him in the daily struggles of country living\, whether tending cattle or fighting off grizzly bears. But when his new bride Hannah (Ullmann) arrives by stagecoach from Minnesota\, she is anything but compliant\, with a headstrong attitude that immediately clashes with Zandy’s coarse personality\, and with a will of her own for a life out west. \nAs the pair struggles to negotiate their mutual disappointments\, Hannah is forced to endure Zandy’s mistreatment amid the hard life of the frontier\, while Zandy must learn to accept his new bride as a person\, rather than as a simple transaction. And though love was not part of the equation for either of them\, when hardship hits and they must struggle together for survival\, they build a grudging and fitful mutual respect. \n\n\nZandy’s Bride is based on Lillian Bos Ross’ novel The Stranger and adapted by screenwriter Marc Norman (winner of the Best Original Screenplay Academy Award for Shakespeare in Love). Directed by Jan Troell (U.S.\, 1974) \n \n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE DIRECTOR\n\n\n\nJan Troell (b. As he begins to build a community among the other hotel residents\, their own deep scars enable him to see his wounds in a new light.

SUMMARY:The New Land /Nybyggarna – Liv Ullmann: A Celebration
DESCRIPTION:FRI—November 22—6:30 PM\n$12 ($7 ASF Members)\n202 min. In Swedish with English subtitles. \nIn this epic sequel to the 1971 film The Emigrants\, Karl-Oskar (Max von Sydow) and his wife Kristina (Liv Ullmann)\, having journeyed to America from Sweden\, are now living in the wilderness of Minnesota. While building a farmhouse and clearing and farming their land\, they must deal with the brutal realities of American frontier life\, including a fierce Sioux uprising and a bloody Civil War as well as the lure of the gold fields of California\, throughout family squabbles and the raising of their children across births\, disease\, journeys\, illnesses\, and deaths. \nNominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 1973 Academy Awards and hailed as “a shattering film” (New York Times) with “poetic and human detail” (New York)\, this film adaptation of the final two books in Swedish novelist Vilhelm Moberg’s Upon a Good Land series captures the hardships and dreams of 19th-century Swedish immigrant households. With precise\, minute detail\, Troell charts a journey that was shared by countless other people who sought better lives across the Atlantic. Directed by Jan Troell (Sweden\, 1972) \n“What [Troell] has achieved seems no less than a masterly exercise in film-making\, a rare union of carefully nuanced performances from a cast led by Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann\, a use of sight and sound that beggars\, at least by its aspirations\, the work of more easily satisfied men and a long but selective narrative as alert to the sins that taint national history as it is sensitive to the small dramas that ultimately seal the course and quality of lives.”—The New York Times \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE DIRECTOR\n\n\n\nJan Troell (b. SUMMARY:The Emigrants /Utvandrarna – Liv Ullmann: A Celebration
DESCRIPTION:TUE—November 19—6:30 PM\n$12 ($7 ASF Members)\n191 min. In Swedish with English subtitles.\n\n\n\nIn this monumental mid-19th century epic by Jan Troell\, based on the first two books of Swedish novelist Vilhelm Moberg’s Upon a Good Land\, Liv Ullmann and Max von Sydown star as Kristina and Kar Oskar Nilsson\, a Swedish couple whose plans to move to America with their family are challenged by physical and emotional trials at every step. Over their years of marriage and building a family in the province of Småland\, Sweden\, the Nilssons have struggled with poor weather\, failed harvests\, and hunger. When Karl Oskar’s brother Robert proposes that they travel to America\, the Nilssons slowly overcome their doubts and begin planning for a journey overseas\, accompanied by Kristen’s uncle Danjel and his family\, who have been exiled from Sweden due to their religious beliefs\, as well as a small party of others seeking new opportunities abroad. \n\nThe journey that unfolds is long and arduous\, as the party undergoes a treacherous ocean crossing on the wooden brig Charlotta\, followed by an equally grueling land passage until at last the emigrants find themselves in the seemingly idyllic land of Minnesota. SUMMARY:Professor's Andersen's Night: Book Talk with Dag Solstad
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning Norwegian novelist Dag Solstad joins us with author Rebecca Dinerstein for a book talk on his newest novel\, an existential murder mystery titled Professor Andersen’s Night. On Christmas Eve\, 55-year-old professor Pål Andersen sits alone in his living room\, drinking coffee and cognac and lost in a train of thought\, when he glances out the window and sees a man strangling a woman across the street. Paralyzed by indecision\, he finds himself unable to call the police or even his friends. Over the night that follows\, he instead finds himself obsessing about the murderer’s whereabouts — until he later finds himself face-to-face with the killer himself. \nAn unsettling yet highly entertaining novel\, written in Dag Solstad’s signature concise\, dark\, and witty prose\, Professor Andersen’s Night examines mid-life crisis and social critique in the wake of a senseless tragedy. \n\n\nFollowing the discussion\, copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing. \n“With sublime restraint and subtle modulation\, Solstad conveys an entire age of sorrow and loss.”—Publisher’s Weekly \n  \n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \n\n\n\nDag Solstad (b. 1941) has written nearly thirty books\, including Professor Andersen’s Night and Novel 11\, Book 18 (forthcoming from New Directions). He is admired worldwide by writers as diverse as Peter Handke and Karl Ove Knausgaard. Solstad has won the 2006 Brage Prize\, the 1989 Nordic Council’s Prize for Literature\, and the Norwegian Critics’ Prize in 1969\, 1992\, and 1999. \n  \n\n  \n  \nTICKET INFORMATION \nAll sales are final. SUMMARY:An-Magritt – Liv Ullmann: A Celebration
DESCRIPTION:SAT—November 16—2 PM\n$12 ($7 ASF Members)\n101 min. In Norwegian with English subtitles. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this adaptation of the Norwegian trilogy Bread of Night by Johan Falkberget\, the young An-Magritt has cultivated exceptional survival skills from a young age. Orphaned by her mother’s suicide following public humiliiation for an affair with a soldier — and raised only by her grandfather — she has grown up in a harsh environment dominated by men\, teaching herself to read and write\, and learning skills in husbandry and trade. Surrounded by a rugged region of ore mines and smelting furnaces\, her life is filled with daily drudgery and adversity\, struggling against poverty\, prejudice\, and the natural elements. \n\n\nBut when the handsome German scholar Johannes arrives\, An-Margritt finds herself charmed by him\, as a mutual affection begins to bring an unexpected joy to her life. And when local malice and resentment threatens the two young lovers\, she must learn to fight not just for herself\, but for happiness. Directed by Arne Skouen (Norway\, 1969) \n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE DIRECTOR\n\n\n\nArne Skouen (b. 1913\, Oslo) is a legend of Norwegian cinematography. As a director he debuted in 1949\, and over the next twenty years shot 16 more features\, many of which had a major influence on the development of Norwegian film. Selected filmography: Street Kids (Gategutter\, 1949)\, Fire in the Night (Det brenner i natt\, 1955)\, Cold Tracks (Kalde spor\, 1962)\, About Tilla (Om Tilla\, 1963)\, An-Magritt (1969). Skouen’s Nine Lives (Ni liv\, 1957) is one of the country’s few movies to be nominated for an Oscar. \n\n\nAn-Magritt is a film adaptation of a Norwegian national work which features an outstanding performance by Liv Ullmann in the title role\, and picturesque camerawork by Swedish director of photography Sven Nykvist. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLIV ULLMANN: A CELEBRATION\n\n\n\nIn celebration of Liv Ullmann\, recipient of the 2019 ASF Gold Medal\, Scandinavia House presents a retrospective of the acclaimed actress and director’s roles and work with leading auteurs. \nThe Wayward Girl\nWED—November 13—6:30 PM \nMiss Julie\nTHU—November 14—6:30 PM \nAn-Magritt\nSAT—November 16—2 PM \nThe Emigrants / Utvandrarna \nTUE—November 19—6:30 PM \nThe New Land / Nybyggarna\nFRI—November 22—6:30 PM \nScenes From A Marriage / Scener Ur Ett Äktenskap\nSAT—November 23—2 PM \n\n\nZandy’s Bride \nWED—December 4—6:30 PM \nThe Abdication\nFRI—December 6—6:30 PM \nKristin Lavransdatter\nWED—December 11—6:30 PM \nFaithless / Trolösa \nFRI—December 13—6:30 PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\nPURCHASE TICKETS\nPURCHASE SERIES PASS
