SUMMARY:JOYCE CAROL OATES: A BODY IN THE SERVICE OF MIND
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of Joyce Carol Oates: A Body In The Service Of Mind (dir. Stig Björkman; Sweden & USA\, 2023)! \nJoyce Carol Oates has long been an intensely private person — until now. In Swedish director Stig Björkman’s groundbreaking new documentary\, Björkman takes us inside Joyce’s life story\, from her working-class childhood in upstate New York to her university years in Syracuse. Get up-close and personal with America’s foremost woman of letters as she reflects on the historical events that left their indelible mark on her work: the 1960s riots in Detroit\, the tragic Chappaquiddick incident and the celebrity of Marilyn Monroe. Featuring narration from Oscar-winning actress Laura Dern. \n“[Björkman] allows us to bask in the writer’s uncanny presence” (The New York Times) \n“An affectionate\, delicately composed portrait of one of America’s most fascinating\, impactful writers” (The Chicago Reader) \n\nPurchase Tickets \n

SUMMARY:SMOKE SAUNA SISTERHOOD
DESCRIPTION:Smoke Sauna Sisterhood\, winner of the award for Best Documentary at the 2023 European Film Awards\, returns to Scandinavia House on January 31! Join us for director Anna Hints’ intimate delve into the cultural tradition of Vana-Võromaa’s smoke saunas in South Estonia (included in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list) and see how they are unique spaces for healing and community. The film draws inspiration from the smoke saunas’ historical role in childbirth\, where women gather to share secrets\, connecting family and friends to cleanse the body and — more importantly — the soul\, inside a place of peace and contemplation. \nThis documentary\, which was the first Estonian film to win an award for directing at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival\, captures the essence of the smoke sauna experience with masterful cinematography\, evoking Vermeer and Rembrandt. Hints authentically portrays women\, delving into themes of trauma\, healing\, and sisterhood. The film concludes with a runic verse\, “Thank You Song for Smoke Sauna\,” performed by director Anna Hints and producer Marianne Ostrat\, expressing gratitude to the spirit of the smoke sauna\, the women in the film\, and all those who contributed to bringing Smoke Sauna Sisterhood to life. The film has been selected as Estonia’s contender for next year’s Academy Awards. \n“This is a film that records a little-known aspect of a little-known national identity…the visual poetry is magnificent”—(Jonathan Romney\, Financial Times) \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:THE 2024 SÁMI FILM FESTIVAL | JE’VIDA (IN-PERSON)
DESCRIPTION:The 6th Annual Sámi Film Festival returns to Scandinavia House this February! This year’s program will include in-person screenings on February 9 & 10 and virtual screenings from February 8 through 11.
