With moderator Bethanne Patrick\, he’ll discuss the writing of the novel\, available on July 6 in translation by David Hackston from Pantheon. \nAn unlikely love story in Kosovo with unpredictable consequences that reverberates throughout a young man’s life\, Bolla is a dazzling tale full of fury\, tenderness\, longing\, and lust. In April 1995\, Arsim is a 24-year-old\, recently married student at the University of Pristina\, keeping his head down to gain a university degree in a time and place deeply hostile to Albanians. In a café he meets a young man named Miloš\, a Serb. Before the day is out\, everything has changed for both of them\, and within a week two milestones erupt in Arsim’s married life: his wife announces her first pregnancy and he begins a life in secret. \n After these fevered beginnings\, Arsim and Miloš’s unlikely affair is derailed by the outbreak of war\, which sends Arsim’s fledgling family abroad and timid Miloš spiraling down a dark path\, as depicted through chaotic journal entries. DESCRIPTION:Visit the studio of Scandinavian folk artist and ASF Folk Art Fellow Pieper Bloomquist! Based in Grand Forks\, North Dakota\, Pieper studied Swedish Dalmålning (Kurbits) and Bonadsmålning\, and has been painting in traditional Scandinavian styles of folk art since 1993. Pieper enjoys utilizing elements from folk art traditions to tell modern stories\, incorporating the floral forms\, borders\, layout and perspective of the past to depict scenes that — while personal to her — portray universal human experiences and daily activities of growing up in the upper Midwest. She enjoys placing playful\, contemporary scenes in the context of traditional Swedish flower and scroll formations. \nIn this visit premiering on Saturday\, June 26\, Pieper will share the differences between various Scandinavian art forms\, revealing a bit of her painting process\, and experiences working as an artist (as well as an oncology nurse) during the pandemic. \nThe Studio Visit will premiere on this page at 2 PM ET on June 26 via YouTube and Facebook\, and remain available to stream here through July 3. DESCRIPTION:Our popular Summer Jazz Series returns to Scandinavia House\, with live performances in Volvo Hall! This summer we’re presenting performances from some of Scandinavia’s most talented young jazz musicians\, composers\, and singers on Thursday evenings in June and July. \nThe series begins on June 24 with Eeppi Ursin Duo\, featuring Eeppi Ursin on vocals & piano and Olli Hirvonen on guitar. During the program\, the artists will perform original music from Ursin’s previous and upcoming albums as well as unique versions of well-known classics. \nVisitors to Scandinavia House are required to follow all safety protocol while on-site\, including wearing masks\, observing social distancing rules in signage\, and maintaining a six-foot distance from all persons present that are not within your party. Her versatile career has taken her all around the world performing as a vocal  soloist at prestigious venues with acclaimed artists such as trumpeter Leroy Jones and Spirit of  New Orleans\, Vocal Ensemble Club For Five\, and UMO Jazz Orchestra\, to name a few. Eeppi is  currently working on her fourth solo album to be released next year. When the COVID -19  pandemic hit\, Eeppi started a livestream concert series called “Love Boat” on her social media platforms and welcomes everybody to join them while waiting for her new album. \nOlli Hirvonen is a Finnish guitarist currently based in Brooklyn\, NY. Fluent in various styles from jazz to rock to more experimental sounds\, he has formed a highly unique style combining these different influences. Hirvonen was the winner of the 2016 Montreux Jazz Guitar Competition.

DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the extension of our online virtual exhibition Conversations with A Shipwreck\, now on view through September 7\, ASF and the Vasa Museum are pleased to present a conversation between the artists Joan Wickersham and Adam Davies\, with Fred Hocker\, the Vasa Museum’s Director of Research. Thanks to the support of an ASF travel grant Joan and Adam were able to spend a full month in Stockholm working with the Vasa Museum. During this time\, Adam and Joan worked closely with Dr. Hocker and his team\, immersing themselves in the museum\, which inspired new creative approaches toward the ship’s story and historic legacy. \nDr. Hocker will discuss three topics of interest to many museumgoers: why the ship sank; the museum site location on a drydock; as well as the preservation of the ship and its contents. The artists and Dr. Hocker will also discuss their time spent together at the museum\, relating these experiences to the artistic output and body of work that became Conversations with A Shipwreck. \nSince opening on March 4\, Conversations with a Shipwreck has been acclaimed as an exhibition where “The viewer listens to [Wickersham’s] words and sees the haunting\, atmospheric images of boat skeleton\, its architecture and intricate carvings\, the ghostly atmosphere of something — and someones — lost and found again\,” (Nina Maclaughlin\, Boston Globe). \nThe event will take place as a Zoom webinar\, and will begin with a video presentation with Wickersham and Davies followed by a moderated discussion and a live audience Q&A. Registration is required; sign up at the link above. \n \n  \nAbout the Speakers\nAdam Davies is a recipient of grants from the American-Scandinavian Foundation\, the Vira Heinz Endowment\, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts\, and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities\, and has attended residencies at Chinati Foundation\, Creative Alliance\, Fine Arts Work Center\, and Yaddo. He has worked as a Lecturer & Media Specialist at the National Gallery of Art\, Washington and taught at Carnegie Mellon\, Catholic\, Robert Morris\, and Harvard Universities. In 2015\, Adam was named as Outstanding Emerging Artist at the DC Mayor’s Arts Awards and was the recipient of the Clarence John Laughlin Award. Between 2016–19\, he was an artist-in-residence at Creative Alliance in Baltimore where his 2018 exhibition featured collaborations with Los Angeles-based musician Alex Zhang Hungtai and Chicago-based percussionist Adam Rosenblatt. In 2019 he presented his project\, Reroutings\, at the Mid-Atlantic TED Talk in Washington\, DC. \nFred Hocker is a historian and has a PhD in anthropology. Doctor Hocker has a vast experience from a long series of marine archeological excavations in the USA\, Northern Europe and the Mediterranean. Since 2003\, he has been the Director of Research at The Vasa Museum. \nJoan Wickersham’s memoir The Suicide Index (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) was a National Book Award finalist\, and appeared on “best books of the year” lists including The Los Angeles Times\, The Washington Post\, The Boston Globe\, The Cleveland Plain Dealer\, New York Magazine\, Salon\, and The Week. Her most recent book\, The News from Spain (Knopf) was named one of the year’s best fiction picks by National Public Radio\, Kirkus Reviews\, and The San Francisco Chronicle. Her fiction has appeared multiple times in The Best American Short Stories and The Best American Nonrequired Reading\, as well as many other publications. For the past ten years\, Joan has been a regular op-ed columnist for The Boston Globe. She has been awarded fellowships by the American-Scandinavian Foundation\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, MacDowell\, and Yaddo. Joan graduated from Yale with a degree in art history and has taught fiction and memoir at Harvard\, Emerson\, UMass Boston\, and the Bennington Writing Seminars.

He received his Ph.D. in history from UC Berkeley in 1993 after living and carrying out research for several years in both Germany and Sweden. He then took up at position teaching Modern European history at Barnard College\, Columbia University\, where he remained for ten years. \nDuring his years in the US\, he also served as a guest professor at the University of Linköping\, teaching graduate courses\, and he also conducted a research project at Södertörn University College\, which resulted in the celebrated book – Är svensken människa?
