SUMMARY:OUT OF FASHION | SCREENING & TALK
DESCRIPTION:On May 21\, join us for a screening and film talk on Out of Fashion\, a documentary exploring how to reduce environmental impact through fashion design\, with Reet Aus and Anthony Luciano! \nDesigner and activist Reet Aus first began studying the environmental impact of fashion production during her doctoral thesis. These studies took her to the epicenter of the fashion industry — Bangladesh — and later led her to create the UPMADE® certification system\, which enables designers to reduce production waste in factories in Bangladesh as well as Turkey\, Poland\, Kenya and Estonia. Out of Fashion looks at the most complicated type of waste in Western society — post-consumer textiles — through a journey that led Aus and her co-filmmaker Jaak Kilmi to Kenya\, a graveyard of used clothes. Following the screening\, Aus and Luciano will discuss the film and the questions it raises. How do you create a produce that does not become trash after a few uses? And what is the designer’s power and role in this chain? \nOut of Fashion will be taking place as part of Reet Aus’ UPMADE IN EE exhibition during the NYCxDESIGN Festival. See a full list of events\, happening May 13 through May 22 across New York\, here. \nRegister \n

SUMMARY:LIFE AFTER DEATH
DESCRIPTION:See a moving journey through the lives of Lithuanian actors of different generations in Life After Death (Gyvenimas po mirties\, dir. Nerijus Milerius\, Lithuania\, 2022)! Following the screening director Nerijus Milerius will be in conversation with Viktoras Bachmetjevas\, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Vytautas Magnus University and current Visiting Scholar in the Baltic Studies Program at Yale University. \nAfter playing death in film\, your own death remains an impossible mystery — a role that has been unwritten\, and has yet to be performed. This is a thought that orbits three different generations of actors — movie and theater legend Juozas (79)\, middle-generation Rasa (45) and Dainius (47)\, and the youngest actor and singer\, Lukas (28). The eldest\, Juozas\, has repeatedly played characters who are on the verge of death in cinema and theater\, but as he increasingly feels the burden of his age\, he now prefers to talk about life in the language of photography\, art and music. Through incredible coincidence\, married couple Rasa and Dainius have both played roles staging their death in the legendary pose of Jean-Paul Marat\, as painted in Jacques Louis David’s painting The Death of Marat; meanwhile\, Rasa is immersed in yoga training in order to devote herself to the fullness of life\, where Dainius is preoccupied by memories of his dead mother and his steadily weakening father. \nIn addition to acting in theater and cinema\, the youngest Lukas\, also sings in a band that has been recognized as “the most violent in the country.” Having recently played the role of Orpheus while divorcing his partner in “real” life\, the worlds of his art have become areas where he can scream out his pain. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:EXODUS
DESCRIPTION:See Exodus (dir. Abbe Hassan\, Sweden\, 2022)\, a gripping new drama about the global migration crisis as seen through the eyes of a shifty smuggler and the innocent young girl he takes under his wing\, on May 15! \nAt the Istanbul international airport\, Amal\, a 12-year-old refugee from Syria\, breaks free from the people holding her captive and collides with 40-year-old Sam\, a professional human smuggler whose operation has just gone wrong. Though Sam is initially reluctant to save her\, they soon find themselves speeding away from airport together in a taxi\, where Sam learns of Amal’s hopes to be reunited with her sisters in Romania. As the pair join forces on a harrowing journey first by inflatable boat across the Black Sea\, and on from Greece to Sweden\, an unexpectedly warm friendship develops between the quick-witted young girl and her jaded traveling partner. And amid the peril of their surroundings\, the journey becomes both their survival and their awakening. \nA warm-hearted story of survival and friendship inspired by Abbe Hassan’s experience leaving war-torn Beirut for Sweden as a child\, Exodus has been hailed as a “tender thriller” (Deadline) exploring the joy of human connection amid the heartbreaking circumstances of the Syrian Refugee Crisis. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:THE TOWER AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD BY WILLIAM HEINESEN
DESCRIPTION:Read and discuss literature with our Nordic Book Club Online! Each month we select a novel from some of the best Nordic literary voices to read and discuss via Zoom. On May 7\, in connection with Fog Swept Islands: Faroe Islands Culture Days\, we will be reading the Faroese classic The Tower at the Edge of the World by William Heinesen. \nFaroese poet\, author\, composer and painter Heinesen has described The Tower at the Edge of the World as “a poetic\, mosaic novel about earliest childhood.” Originally published in the Danish language in 1976\, the book follows an old man’s confrontation with mortality as he looks back at his boyhood in Torshavn\, where his small-town existence at the edge of the world — or at least the Atlantic Ocean — contains a miraculous larger-than-life feeling. \nConsidered one of the greatest Faroese authors of the 20th century and a winner of awards including the Holberg Medal (1960)\, the Nordic Council Literature Prize (1965)\, among many others\, Heinesen is recognized for his books using his remote North Atlantic homeland as a setting for universal social\, psychological\, and cosmic themes. His last novel\, written when the author was 76\,  The Tower at the Edge of the World has been hailed as “a loosely autobiographical tribute to the power of the creative imagination” (Paul Binding\, The Times) and a “poetic evocation of life on an island that to the vast ocean is ‘just about the same as a grain of sand to the floor of a dance hall'” (Sjon\, The Guardian). \nRegister

SUMMARY:THREE GREAT ROMANTICS: KEYBOARD CONVERSATIONS® WITH JEFFREY SIEGEL
DESCRIPTION:Internationally acclaimed pianist Jeffrey Siegel returns this fall for his ever-popular Keyboard Conversations® series at Scandinavia House. Each evening comprises an informal commentary on the music and its composers\, a full performance of each work\, and a short Q & A session. The engaging format both makes friends of classical music and enriches the listening experience for avid music lovers. \nOn January 1\, 1888\, three popular composers — Grieg\, Tchaikovsky and Brahms — came together for one and only time. Hear how they influenced one another — and went their own way! \n\n\nThanks to a generous loan by Victor Borge’s grandson Finn\, concerts will be performed on Victor Borge’s personal Steinway piano. \nPurchase Tickets
