SUMMARY:Zandy's Bride – Liv Ullmann: A Celebration
DESCRIPTION:WED—December 4—6:30 PM\n$12 ($7 ASF Members)\n97 min. In English. \n\n\n\nWhen the hardboiled late 19th-century rancher Zandy (Gene Hackman) decides to take a mail-order bride\, he isn’t especially interested in love; instead\, he wants a woman who can bear his child and aid him in the daily struggles of country living\, whether tending cattle or fighting off grizzly bears. But when his new bride Hannah (Ullmann) arrives by stagecoach from Minnesota\, she is anything but compliant\, with a headstrong attitude that immediately clashes with Zandy’s coarse personality\, and with a will of her own for a life out west. \nAs the pair struggles to negotiate their mutual disappointments\, Hannah is forced to endure Zandy’s mistreatment amid the hard life of the frontier\, while Zandy must learn to accept his new bride as a person\, rather than as a simple transaction. And though love was not part of the equation for either of them\, when hardship hits and they must struggle together for survival\, they build a grudging and fitful mutual respect. \n\n\nZandy’s Bride is based on Lillian Bos Ross’ novel The Stranger and adapted by screenwriter Marc Norman (winner of the Best Original Screenplay Academy Award for Shakespeare in Love). Directed by Jan Troell (U.S.\, 1974) \n \n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE DIRECTOR\n\n\n\nJan Troell (b. SUMMARY:Nordic Book Club: "Hotel Silence" by Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir
DESCRIPTION:Read and discuss Scandinavian literature in translation as part of our Nordic Book Club. Each month we select a novel from some of the best Nordic literary voices. Discussions typically take place the last Tuesday of the month in the Halldór Laxness Library at Scandinavia House and online in our Goodreads group during the last week of the month. \nThis month\, we’re reading “Hotel Silence” by Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir\, winner of the Icelandic Literary Prize. Compulsive to fix things\, 50-year-old Jónas Ebenezer finds himself unable to fix his own life — his divorce and discovery that he is not his daughter’s biological father has sent him into existential crisis. Armed with little more than his toolbox\, he flies to an unnamed and recently war-torn country\, where he books a room at the Hotel Silence. As he begins to build a community among the other hotel residents\, their own deep scars enable him to see his wounds in a new light.

DESCRIPTION:SAT—November 23—2 PM\n$12 ($7 ASF Members)\n169 min. In Swedish with English Subtitles. \nScenes From A Marriage explores the disintegration of the marriage between Marianne (Liv Ullmann)\, a family lawyer specializing in divorce\, and Johan (Erland Josephson)\, spanning a period of 10 years. Despite seeming to have it all\, Marianne and Johan’s happiness is a facade for a troubled relationship\, one which becomes even rockier when Johan admits that he’s been having an affair. Before long\, the spouses have separated and are moving towards finalizing their divorce\, throughout attempts at reconciling. As they each pursue other relationships\, Johan and Marianne realize that they still have a significant bond\, though one complicated by many issues that hinder their ability to connect. \nAt once monumental and intimate\, Scenes from a Marriage featured flawless\, soul-baring performances from Ullmann and Josephson throughout the years of love and turmoil that bind Marianne and Johan in stages of matrimony\, infidelity\, divorce\, and subsequent partnerships. Originally conceived as a six-part television miniseries\, the shortened theatrical release version was chosen as the best film of the year by critic Roger Ebert and one of the best 10 films of the year by dozens of leading critics. Directed by Ingmar Bergman (Sweden\, 1974) \n“Shattering\, touching\, exhaustingly honest\, with a sweep and candour that put American television — not to say movies — to shame.”—Newsweek \n\n\n“One of the truest\, most luminous love stories ever made.”—Roger Ebert\, Chicago Sun-Times \n \n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT INGMAR BERGMAN\n\n\n\nIngmar Bergman (1918-2007) was a Swedish film and theatre director\, writer\, theater manager\, dramatist and author. SUMMARY:The New Land /Nybyggarna – Liv Ullmann: A Celebration
DESCRIPTION:FRI—November 22—6:30 PM\n$12 ($7 ASF Members)\n202 min. In Swedish with English subtitles. \nIn this epic sequel to the 1971 film The Emigrants\, Karl-Oskar (Max von Sydow) and his wife Kristina (Liv Ullmann)\, having journeyed to America from Sweden\, are now living in the wilderness of Minnesota. While building a farmhouse and clearing and farming their land\, they must deal with the brutal realities of American frontier life\, including a fierce Sioux uprising and a bloody Civil War as well as the lure of the gold fields of California\, throughout family squabbles and the raising of their children across births\, disease\, journeys\, illnesses\, and deaths. \nNominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 1973 Academy Awards and hailed as “a shattering film” (New York Times) with “poetic and human detail” (New York)\, this film adaptation of the final two books in Swedish novelist Vilhelm Moberg’s Upon a Good Land series captures the hardships and dreams of 19th-century Swedish immigrant households. With precise\, minute detail\, Troell charts a journey that was shared by countless other people who sought better lives across the Atlantic. Directed by Jan Troell (Sweden\, 1972) \n“What [Troell] has achieved seems no less than a masterly exercise in film-making\, a rare union of carefully nuanced performances from a cast led by Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann\, a use of sight and sound that beggars\, at least by its aspirations\, the work of more easily satisfied men and a long but selective narrative as alert to the sins that taint national history as it is sensitive to the small dramas that ultimately seal the course and quality of lives.”—The New York Times \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE DIRECTOR\n\n\n\nJan Troell (b. SUMMARY:The Emigrants /Utvandrarna – Liv Ullmann: A Celebration
DESCRIPTION:TUE—November 19—6:30 PM\n$12 ($7 ASF Members)\n191 min. In Swedish with English subtitles.\n\n\n\nIn this monumental mid-19th century epic by Jan Troell\, based on the first two books of Swedish novelist Vilhelm Moberg’s Upon a Good Land\, Liv Ullmann and Max von Sydown star as Kristina and Kar Oskar Nilsson\, a Swedish couple whose plans to move to America with their family are challenged by physical and emotional trials at every step. Over their years of marriage and building a family in the province of Småland\, Sweden\, the Nilssons have struggled with poor weather\, failed harvests\, and hunger. When Karl Oskar’s brother Robert proposes that they travel to America\, the Nilssons slowly overcome their doubts and begin planning for a journey overseas\, accompanied by Kristen’s uncle Danjel and his family\, who have been exiled from Sweden due to their religious beliefs\, as well as a small party of others seeking new opportunities abroad. \n\nThe journey that unfolds is long and arduous\, as the party undergoes a treacherous ocean crossing on the wooden brig Charlotta\, followed by an equally grueling land passage until at last the emigrants find themselves in the seemingly idyllic land of Minnesota. Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Picture Academy Awards\, The Emigrants  captures the laborious passage of the countless settlers seeking better lives across the Atlantic\, and their efforts to put down roots in a beautiful but forbidding new world. Directed by Jan Troell (Sweden\, 1971) \nThe sequel to this film\, The New Land\, will be presented on Friday\, November 22. \n\n\n“Infinitely absorbing and moving … The Emigrants is a special film in that it’s Swedish and yet somehow American – in the sense that it tells the story of what America meant for so many millions.”—Roger Ebert \n\n\n\n\n“Engrossing at every step of the way\, the duo of The Emigrants and The New Land makes for perhaps the greatest screen drama about the settling of America.”—The Criterion Collection \n \n\n\n\nABOUT THE DIRECTOR\n\n\n\nJan Troell (b. SUMMARY:Professor's Andersen's Night: Book Talk with Dag Solstad
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning Norwegian novelist Dag Solstad joins us with author Rebecca Dinerstein for a book talk on his newest novel\, an existential murder mystery titled Professor Andersen’s Night. On Christmas Eve\, 55-year-old professor Pål Andersen sits alone in his living room\, drinking coffee and cognac and lost in a train of thought\, when he glances out the window and sees a man strangling a woman across the street. Paralyzed by indecision\, he finds himself unable to call the police or even his friends. Over the night that follows\, he instead finds himself obsessing about the murderer’s whereabouts — until he later finds himself face-to-face with the killer himself. \nAn unsettling yet highly entertaining novel\, written in Dag Solstad’s signature concise\, dark\, and witty prose\, Professor Andersen’s Night examines mid-life crisis and social critique in the wake of a senseless tragedy. \n\n\nFollowing the discussion\, copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing. \n“With sublime restraint and subtle modulation\, Solstad conveys an entire age of sorrow and loss.”—Publisher’s Weekly \n  \n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \n\n\n\nDag Solstad (b. 1941) has written nearly thirty books\, including Professor Andersen’s Night and Novel 11\, Book 18 (forthcoming from New Directions). He is admired worldwide by writers as diverse as Peter Handke and Karl Ove Knausgaard. Solstad has won the 2006 Brage Prize\, the 1989 Nordic Council’s Prize for Literature\, and the Norwegian Critics’ Prize in 1969\, 1992\, and 1999. \n  \n\n  \n  \nTICKET INFORMATION \nAll sales are final.
