SUMMARY:The 2023 Sámi Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The 5th Annual Sámi Film Festival returns this February exploring Sámi stories through film in a must-see hybrid event taking place both in-person and virtually! \nPresented as a partnership between the National Nordic Museum in Seattle and Scandinavia House in New York\, the Festival will take place virtually from February 9-12 and in-person at both venues on February 11\, 2023. The program includes a variety of contemporary Sámi documentaries\, short films\, and panel discussions with the filmmakers\, and in 2023\, the Sámi Film Festival will feature the selections of guest curator of film and acclaimed director Katja Gauriloff. \nGauriloff\, a Skolt Sámi filmmaker and co-owner of the production company Oktober\, was recently awarded the Finnish Film Affair’s top prize for Je’vida\, the first film shot in the Skolt Sámi language. \nThe Sámi Film Festival originated as a partnership between the National Nordic Museum and Pacific Sámi Searvi in 2018. Since that time\, it has become an onsite event drawing audiences from the East and West Coasts and an online event sharing Sámi film with a global audience. \nTickets and a full lineup will be announced closer to the date; check back soon for more details! \nAbout the Curator\nAward-winning director Katja Gauriloff is well-known for her influential films. Her films have received awards at various festivals around the world. Her films Canned Dreams and Kaisa’s Enchanted Forest have both been part of the Berlinale festival selection. Kaisa’s Enchanted Forest opened the Berlinale NATIVe section in 2017. \nAdditionally\, Katja Gauriloff has been awarded the Finnish National Film Awards (Jussi) for the best documentary film in 2016. Gauriloff is currently working on her second fiction feature Je’vida which will be the first Skolt Sámi language feature film in history. Gauriloff lives and works in Rovaniemi\, Northern Finland. \nSupport\nThe 5th Annual Sámi Film Festival is presented a partnership with The National Nordic Museum in Seattle.

He won the Student Academy Award for best foreign film with Tuba Atlantic. SUMMARY:On The Arctic Edge: Marion Belanger\, Clare Benson\, and Steve Giovinco
DESCRIPTION:On February 4\, please join ASF for a conversation with artists Marion Belanger\, Clare Benson\, and Steve Giovinco\, whose works are currently featured in the exhibition\, On the Arctic Edge: Artists Explore the Far North at Scandinavia House. \nModerated by photographer Erika Larsen\, the discussion will examine the individual experiences and work of each artist\, as well as the broader perspective the exhibition brings as a collective reflection on the rapidly changing landscape of the Arctic region. \nAbout the Speakers\nClare Benson is a photographer and interdisciplinary artist whose work explores themes of family history\, tradition\, science\, and mythology. She received her MFA from the University of Arizona and her BFA from Central Michigan University. In 2014-15 she was the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship to Arctic Sweden\, where she worked alongside space scientists and indigenous Sami reindeer herders. Her first book The Shepherd’s Daughter was published in 2017 by Photolucida\, in receipt of the Critical Mass Book Award. Benson’s work has been featured in exhibitions\, screenings\, and publications across the U.S. and internationally. She is currently Assistant Professor of Photography at the University of Connecticut. \nMarion Belanger is interested in the concepts of persistence and change\, and in the way that boundaries demarcate difference\, particularly in regard to the land. She has been the recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship\, a John Anson Kittredge Award\, an American Scandinavian Fellowship\, Connecticut Commission on the Arts Fellowships\, and has been an artist in residence at the MacDowell Colony\, at the Atlantic Center for the Arts\, at the Virginia Center for the Arts and at Everglades National Park. Marion Belanger earned her MFA from the Yale University School of Art where she was the recipient of both the John Ferguson Weir Award and the Schickle-Collingwood Prize\, and a BFA from the College of Art & Design at Alfred University. Her photographs are included in many permanent collections including the Library of Congress\, the National Gallery of Art\, the Yale University Gallery of Art\, the New Orleans Museum of Art and the International Center of Photography. \nSteve Giovinco is a New York City-based fine-art photographer\, who focuses on creating images of couples with himself and lyrical night landscapes. His work is collected by many museums\, including the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, has exhibited widely in galleries and received his MFA from Yale University School of Art. His new photo series Inertia looks at the land\, ice and communities in Southern Greenland including the tiny remote town Narsarsuaq\, population 158\, which lies in the shadow of glaciers. \nErika Larsen is a transdisciplinary storyteller who believes that photography is a practice to expand our understanding of time\, place\, and people. She is fascinated by how we communicate with nature and often focuses on learning from people who maintain strong relationships with the natural world. Her monograph\, Sami-Walking with Reindeer\, reflects her time living in the Scandinavian Arctic. Her second monograph\, Materia Prima\, is a collection of photographs and poems that explore ritual and the process of remembering we are nature. Her work has been included in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\, National Geographic Society\, Fotografiska Museum\, University of Kentucky Art Museum\, and the United States Embassy in Oslo. Erika is a lecturer at The Peruvian University of Applied Sciences in Lima\, Peru.

SUMMARY:The Fantastic Art of Paper-Cutting
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand\, celebrated Danish paper-cutting artist Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen returns for a workshop on creating wonderful paper-cut beings! Clausen\, who has held paper-cutting workshops in Denmark\, Japan and the U.S.\, has created a magical paper-cut universe inhabited by beings previously confined inside the paper. “I can sense that the beings are in the paper\, but at the same time they are sad. After some help from the scissors\, they travel around happily in our diverse world\,” Clausen explains of his artwork. \nIn this online workshop held via Zoom\, Clausen will share his techniques and guide viewers through creating their own paper-cut magic. Participants will also explore the paper-cut artwork of renowned storyteller Hans Christian Andersen\, and hear about Clausen’s own journey to becoming a paper-cutting artist. The class will be limited to 30 participants to allow for audience interaction. \nThe class will take place as virtual instruction over Zoom; students should supply their own materials to cut alongside Clausen. Skill is beginner-level and above. \nMaterials: \n\nSharp pair of scissors\nFive pieces of any color paper sized approximately 4 x 4 inches (approximately the thickness of printer paper)\nFive pieces of any color paper sized approximately 1 x 2 inches\nAdditional paper to use as needed\n\nAbout the Instructor\nTorben Jarlstrøm Clausen started as a paper-cut artist in 2004. Since then\, he has exhibited over 110 places in the U.S.\, Japan\, and Denmark and has held numerous workshops in the same countries.Clausen lives in Odense\, Denmark\, which is the birthplace of world-famous fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen\, who was also a very skilled paper-cut artist. Torben Jarlstrøm Clausen seeks with his paper cuts to maintain and renew this old paper cut tradition\, which Hans Christian Andersen was an exponent of almost 200 years ago. He has been described by The Washington Post as “technically resplendent\, powerful\, intuitively secure\,” and by The New York Times as “a superb Swedish pianist” whose recital “was rewarding\, both for its unusual programming and for his eloquent\, technically polished performances.”Tengstrand is the subject of the acclaimed Swedish documentary The Soloist\, directed by Magnus Gertten and Stefan Berg (Sweden\, 2003)\, which was featured at the International Festival of Cinema and Technology in New York. \nIn 2005 he was decorated by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden with the “Litteris et Artibus” Medal for outstanding service to the arts. During the pandemic\, Per started making music documentaries which were viewed and appreciated by people all over the world. As this line of work will continue\, the documentary Beethoven and the Freedom of the Will is planned to have its world premiere at Scandinavia House in 2022.
