SUMMARY:EXODUS
DESCRIPTION:See Exodus (dir. Abbe Hassan\, Sweden\, 2022)\, a gripping new drama about the global migration crisis as seen through the eyes of a shifty smuggler and the innocent young girl he takes under his wing\, on May 15! \nAt the Istanbul international airport\, Amal\, a 12-year-old refugee from Syria\, breaks free from the people holding her captive and collides with 40-year-old Sam\, a professional human smuggler whose operation has just gone wrong. Though Sam is initially reluctant to save her\, they soon find themselves speeding away from airport together in a taxi\, where Sam learns of Amal’s hopes to be reunited with her sisters in Romania. As the pair join forces on a harrowing journey first by inflatable boat across the Black Sea\, and on from Greece to Sweden\, an unexpectedly warm friendship develops between the quick-witted young girl and her jaded traveling partner. And amid the peril of their surroundings\, the journey becomes both their survival and their awakening. \nA warm-hearted story of survival and friendship inspired by Abbe Hassan’s experience leaving war-torn Beirut for Sweden as a child\, Exodus has been hailed as a “tender thriller” (Deadline) exploring the joy of human connection amid the heartbreaking circumstances of the Syrian Refugee Crisis. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:THE TOWER AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD BY WILLIAM HEINESEN
DESCRIPTION:Read and discuss literature with our Nordic Book Club Online! Each month we select a novel from some of the best Nordic literary voices to read and discuss via Zoom. On May 7\, in connection with Fog Swept Islands: Faroe Islands Culture Days\, we will be reading the Faroese classic The Tower at the Edge of the World by William Heinesen. \nFaroese poet\, author\, composer and painter Heinesen has described The Tower at the Edge of the World as “a poetic\, mosaic novel about earliest childhood.” Originally published in the Danish language in 1976\, the book follows an old man’s confrontation with mortality as he looks back at his boyhood in Torshavn\, where his small-town existence at the edge of the world — or at least the Atlantic Ocean — contains a miraculous larger-than-life feeling. \nConsidered one of the greatest Faroese authors of the 20th century and a winner of awards including the Holberg Medal (1960)\, the Nordic Council Literature Prize (1965)\, among many others\, Heinesen is recognized for his books using his remote North Atlantic homeland as a setting for universal social\, psychological\, and cosmic themes. His last novel\, written when the author was 76\,  The Tower at the Edge of the World has been hailed as “a loosely autobiographical tribute to the power of the creative imagination” (Paul Binding\, The Times) and a “poetic evocation of life on an island that to the vast ocean is ‘just about the same as a grain of sand to the floor of a dance hall'” (Sjon\, The Guardian). \nRegister

SUMMARY:D FOR DAUGHTER | BOOK TALK WITH ELINA BIRKEHAG
DESCRIPTION:Join us April 27 to celebrate the book launch of D For Daughter\, a new photobook by Stockholm-based artist Elina Birkehag out now from D.A.P./Artbooks! \nDeep in Dalarna\, Sweden\, scattered amongst stumps and newer growth trees\, stand Scotch pine trees\, hundreds of years old—thick\, gnarled\, and covered with carvings. The messages inscribed into their trunks were made by female shepherds from the 17th- to 20th-centuries who left their villages to live and work together on the fäbod (summer farm)\, and lead their families’ cattle to graze. Out in the pastures\, these young women carved dates\, their initials\, and notes to each other. The trunks became inscribed with a kind of frenetic teenage scrawl\, a coded language\, an assertion of their existence: HERE WE CARVE OUR NAMES. \nThe artist Elina Birkehag grew up in a village not far from these woods. She has searched and documented the carved messages on the trees—a “living” archive that will also die\, decompose\, and eventually disappear. D For Daughter collects these written notes\, drawings\, photographs\, and other findings\, connecting readers with the female shepherds and allow them to read the trees. \nWith contributions by Quinn Latimer\, Meg Miller\, Matilda Kenttä & Linnea Rutz\, Jungmyung Lee\, Jennie Tiderman-Österberg\, and Amelia Groom & M. Ty\, as well as graphic design and co-editing by Laslo Strong\, D For Daughter forms a dialogue with this barely-studied writing system and relate it to contemporary themes of knowledge sharing\, gossip\, ecology\, labor and art. \nRegister

SUMMARY:HEROSTORIES | BOOK TALK WITH KRISTÍN SVAVA TÓMASDÓTTIR\, K.B. THORS & LARISSA KYZER
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a book talk with Icelandic poet and historian Kristín Svava Tómasdóttir and translator and ASF Translation Prizewinner K.B. Thors on Herostories! With moderator Larissa Kyzer (also an ASF Translation Prizewinner)\, Tómasdóttir and Thors will discuss this new work out now from Vellum Press revealing tales untold by most history books: the harrowing journeys and vital triumphs of 19th- and 20th-century midwifery in the vast landscape of Iceland. \nComposed from the memoirs and biographies of 100 Icelandic midwives\, poet-historian Kristín Svava Tómasdóttir’s found poems illuminate the dangers and valor of birthwork. Forgoing traditional sagas of androcentric conquest\, these poems center the adventures of ljósmæður\, “mothers of light.” Tómasdóttir leverages epic elements—dashing mountain treks\, rivers forded on horseback\, unyielding compassion—to challenge how and by whom stories become legend. Beyond archival recognition\, the text’s formally ambitious poetics render gender-based battles for literacy and education alongside narratives of selfless womanly caretaking\, pressurizing the fundamental tensions between feminine self-actualization and the romanticized service of these trailblazing figures. \nThe follow-up to Tómasdóttir and Thors’ award-winning\, PEN-nominated Stormwarning\, Herostories documents the professional achievements of Iceland’s first women to work outside the home\, precursors to today’s midwives who remain central to contemporary health care on the island. \nRegister
