SUMMARY:FALLEN LEAVES — SCREENING & FILM TALK
DESCRIPTION:“Aki Kaurismäki’s almost feelgood romance is a droll delight” (The Guardian) — on January 12\, join us for a special screening of Fallen Leaves (Kuolleet lehdet\, Finland\, 2023)\, Aki Kaurismäki’s triumphant new film about love\, chance and fate! Returning this fall and winter\, the Nordic & Baltic Oscar Contenders series features films chosen for Oscar nominations at the 96th Annual Academy Awards\, including Fallen Leaves\, a contender for Best International Feature Film. This screening will be followed by an unmissable Q&A with lead actors Alma Pöysti and Jussi Vatanen! \nAward-winning filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki (Le Havre\, The Other Side of Hope) makes a masterful return with Fallen Leaves\, a timeless\, hopeful and satisfying love story that won the Jury Prize at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Set in present-day Helsinki\, the film tells the story of Ansa (Alma Pöysti) and Holappa (Jussi Vatanen)\, two lonely souls whose chance meeting at a local karaoke bar is beset by numerous hurdles. From lost phone numbers to mistaken addresses\, alcoholism and a charming stray dog\, the pair’s path to happiness is as bittersweet as it is ultimately delightful. \nShot through with Kaurismäki’s typically playful\, idiosyncratic style and deadpan sense of humor\, this tender romantic tragicomedy is both a loving tribute to the filmmaker’s beloved contemporaries and a timely reminder of the potency of movie-going from one of cinema’s living legends. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:NEW SWEDISH FOLK WITH FRÄNDER AND TARABBAND!
DESCRIPTION:On January 13\, join us for an afternoon of new Swedish folk music! The program will include two acts — Fränder and Tarabband— whose music pushes the boundaries of the folk genre\, incorporating modern twists and elements of world music. \n\nSupport for this event has been generously provided by the Swedish Arts Council (Kulturrådet)\, Musikcentrum Syd\, Export Music Sweden and Letterstdtska Föreningen.\nABOUT THE MUSICIANS\n\nFränder have established themselves as a unique voice on the Nordic folk scene. They play modern\, acoustic folk music with a heavier and bigger sound than is typical for the genre\, delivering heavy grooves and seductive harmonies with energy and a warm presence. Fränder’s latest album release\, Fränder II\, has been hailed as “an absolutely magnificent masterpiece” (LIRA.se). \n\nTarabband is an award-winning music group founded in 2008 by Iraqi-Egyptian vocalist Nadin Al Khalidi in Malmö\, Sweden. Nadin Al Khalidi fled Iraq in 2001\, arriving in Sweden as a refugee. Her lyrics merge political and social themes\, considering issues surrounding identity\, survival and love. A unique live band with influences from North Africa\, the Middle East and Europe — parts of the world where its music has seen enormous success — Tarabband is excited to celebrate their 15th anniversary this year.

SUMMARY:THE PROMISED LAND
DESCRIPTION:Danish epic The Promised Land\, recently shortlisted for the 2024 Academy Award for Best International Feature\, returns to Scandinavia House on Sunday\, January 14! \nIn 18th-century Denmark\, Captain Ludvig Kahlen (Mads Mikkelsen) — a proud\, ambitious\, but impoverished war hero — sets out to tame a vast\, uninhabitable land on which seemingly nothing can grow. He seeks to start farming crops\, build a colony in the name of the King\, and gain a noble title for himself. This beautiful but forbidding area also happens to be under the rule of the merciless Frederik De Schinkel\, a preening nobleman who realizes the threat Kahlen represents to his power. Struggling against the elements and local brigands\, Kahlen is joined by a couple who has fled the clutches of the rapacious De Schinkel. As this group of misfits begins to build a small community in this inhospitable place\, De Schinkel swears vengeance\, and the confrontation between him and Kahlen promises to be as violent and intense as these two men. \nAn official selection at Venice International Film Festival\, Toronto International Film Festival\, and others\, Nikolaj Arcel’s (Oscar®-nominated for A Royal Affair) sweeping film has been hailed as “the kind of ravishing\, rousing epic we don’t really get much of anymore” (Bilge Ebiri\, New York Magazine). \n“Mads Mikkelsen smolders magnificently. He brings magnetic stoicism\, imposing physicality and soulful introspection to a character who might have been at home in a John Ford saga”—(David Rooney\, The Hollywood Reporter) \n“End-to-end entertaining. A kind of Nordic western with old-fashioned pleasures: romance\, villainy\, adventure\, heroism\, a bloody\, gripping climax\, and loads of gorgeous widescreen vistas along the way”—(Taylor Antrim\, Vogue) \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:BAND
DESCRIPTION:On January 17\, see the riotous new Icelandic documentary Band (dir. Álfrún Örnólfsdóttir\, Iceland\, 2022)! \nA rockumentary in the vein of This is Spinal Tap and Leningrad Cowboys Go America\, Band tells the story of three electro punk musicians who give themselves a deadline by which to go hard or go home. Director Álfrún Örnólfsdóttir and her bandmates Saga and Hrefna of the Post Performance Blues Band are tired of getting paid in beer at hole-in-the-wall venues. Staring down 40 and juggling motherhood with their artistic pursuits\, the three friends give themselves a year to either achieve stardom or break up for good. \nA rollicking but serious parable about ambition\, artmaking\, and gender roles\, Band shows what happens to women with talent but not time in a youth-obsessed industry. \n“Meet Your New Cult Favorites”\n—POV Magazine \n“It’s hilarious. The PPBB [Post Performance Blues Band] exists\, heavens be praised.”\n—Cineuropa\n\nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:SMOKE SAUNA SISTERHOOD
DESCRIPTION:Smoke Sauna Sisterhood\, winner of the award for Best Documentary at the 2023 European Film Awards\, returns to Scandinavia House on January 31! Join us for director Anna Hints’ intimate delve into the cultural tradition of Vana-Võromaa’s smoke saunas in South Estonia (included in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list) and see how they are unique spaces for healing and community. The film draws inspiration from the smoke saunas’ historical role in childbirth\, where women gather to share secrets\, connecting family and friends to cleanse the body and — more importantly — the soul\, inside a place of peace and contemplation. \nThis documentary\, which was the first Estonian film to win an award for directing at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival\, captures the essence of the smoke sauna experience with masterful cinematography\, evoking Vermeer and Rembrandt. Hints authentically portrays women\, delving into themes of trauma\, healing\, and sisterhood. The film concludes with a runic verse\, “Thank You Song for Smoke Sauna\,” performed by director Anna Hints and producer Marianne Ostrat\, expressing gratitude to the spirit of the smoke sauna\, the women in the film\, and all those who contributed to bringing Smoke Sauna Sisterhood to life. The film has been selected as Estonia’s contender for next year’s Academy Awards. \n“This is a film that records a little-known aspect of a little-known national identity…the visual poetry is magnificent”—(Jonathan Romney\, Financial Times) \nPurchase Tickets
