SUMMARY:Wanderlust: An Eccentric Explorer\, an Epic Journey\, a Lost Age
DESCRIPTION:Join best-selling author Reid Mitenbuler to learn about Danish Arctic explorer\, resistance fighter\, and environmentalist Peter Freuchen in a book discussion of Wanderlust: An Eccentric Explorer\, an Epic Journey\, a Lost Age\, out February 21 from Mariner Books! \nDeep in the Arctic wilderness\, Peter Freuchen awoke to find himself buried alive under the snow. During a sudden blizzard the night before\, he had taken shelter underneath his dogsled and become trapped there while he slept. Now\, as feeling drained from his body\, he managed to claw a hole through the ice only to find himself in even greater danger: his beard\, wet with condensation from his struggling breath\, had frozen to his sled runners and lashed his head in place\, exposing it to icy winds that needed only a few minutes to kill him… But if Freuchen could escape that\, he could escape anything. And now his story is finally being told. \nMeticulously researched and grippingly written\, Reid Mitenbuler’s vivid portrait of the “Most Interesting Man in the World” chronicles how the wildly eccentric Dane’s insatiable curiosity drove him from the twilight years of Arctic exploration to the Golden Age of Hollywood\, and from the burgeoning field of climate research to the Danish underground during World War II. In today’s program\, Mitenbuler will discuss Freuchen’s jaw-dropping expeditions\, survival of a Nazi prison camp\, and recovery from a devastating injury\, as well as the explorer’s restlessness and ideals\, which were remarkably ahead of his time — championing Indigenous communities\, environmental stewardship\, and conversations that continue today. \nThis event will take place in-person at Scandinavia House. Registration is required; please sign up at the link above. \n“This adventure story is impossible to resist” (Publishers Weekly). \nAbout the Author\nReid Mitenbuler is the author of Bourbon Empire: The Past and Future of America’s Whiskey and Wild Minds: The Artists and Rivalries That Inspired the Golden Age of Animation. His writing has appeared in Air Mail\, The Atlantic\, Slate\, The Daily Beast\, and Whisky Advocate\, among other publications. He lives with his family in Los Angeles.

SUMMARY:W. A Novel by Steve Sem-Sandberg
DESCRIPTION:Read and discuss Scandinavian literature in translation as part of our Nordic Book Club\, now online! Each month we select a novel from some of the best Nordic literary voices. On March 7\, we’ll be discussing W. A Novel by Steve Sem-Sandberg\, who discussed the novel with us last September in a virtual book talk streaming here. \nConsidered the first modern drama and based on true events\, Georg Büchner’s play Woyzeck tells the story of a loyal soldier and survivor of the Napoleonic Wars who\, in a fit of jealous rage\, kills the woman he loves. In this literary reimagining of the text\, Sem-Sandberg’s W grippingly recounts the lovers’ relationship\, the murder case\, and the execution\, unfolding as the soldier W. struggles to recount the events of his life. \nBringing new light to this story from court documents from the original case\, Sem-Sandberg masterfully sustains a rich period atmosphere though poetic and controlled prose even down to the choice of pronouns\, as the soldier is held at a cold distance in court proceedings when addressed with the formal\, capitalized “You.” \nAgainst a landscape devastated by inhumanity and greed and\, yet\, which manages to sustain hope\, W. tells a ruthless\, moving\, and utterly relevant story of a soldier fighting to make something of the life given to him. \nAbout the Author\nSteve Sem-Sandberg’s novels include The Emperor of Lies\, winner of the August Prize; The Chosen Ones\, winner of France’s Prix Médicis étranger; and W.\, which was awarded the Eyvind Johnson Prize. His books have been bestsellers around the world and have been translated into 30 languages. In 2020\, he was elected to the Swedish Academy\, the body that chooses the Nobel Prize for Literature.

SUMMARY:Comedy Queen
DESCRIPTION:“A tender journey into the process of grief and how to manage it – more specifically\, if you’re a gutsy young gamine\, harshly and unfairly interrupted in the middle of your childhood” — see the critically acclaimed Swedish dramedy Comedy Queen (dir. Sanna Lenken\, Sweden\, 2022) at Scandinavia House! Sasha doesn’t want to cry — and she’s deeply angry at her mother for taking her own life. To escape a similar fate\, the 13-year-old compiles a survival list. First up: cut off her long hair. Second: don’t read any more books. Third: never take care of something that’s alive. And fourth: become a stand-up comedian to make her papa laugh again. As she sets off on her checklist — some of which prove more challenging than others — Sasha can count on support from her friends and family\, even when they don’t fully understand her. Based on the acclaimed novel by Jenny Jägerfeld and winner of awards including the Crystal Bear at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival\, Comedy Queen sensitively depicts an emotional journey of grief and anger transformed by humor. \n“Treading the fine line between the gutsy and the brittle\, Sanna Lenken’s return shines a ray of joy on the harsh process of grief management” (Cineuropa) \n \nAbout the Director\nSanna Lenken was born in Gothenburg\, Sweden in 1978. She studied at the Dramatiska Institutet in Stockholm and the European Film College in Denmark. After making several successful short films\, including Eating Lunch\, and the series Double Life\, she directed My Skinny Sister\, her debut feature which won the Crystal Bear at the Berlinale and the Audience Award at the Göteborg Film Festival. A Berlinale Talents alumna\, her most recent works are the popular series Thin Blue Line for Swedish television and the Viaplay series Thunder in My Heart.

SUMMARY:So Damn Easy Going
DESCRIPTION:This February\, see the Swedish dramedy So Damn Easy Going / Så Jävla Easy Going (dir. Christoffer Sandler\, Sweden\, 2022). SUMMARY:EVIL FLOWERS
DESCRIPTION:This February\, join us for a book talk with award-winning Norwegian writer Gunnhild Øyehaug on her new book Evil Flowers. With moderator Catherine Lacey\, she’ll discuss her collection of playfully surreal stories about love\, death\, and metamorphosis. \nIn Evil Flowers\, a precise but madcap collection of short stories\, Gunnhild Øyehaug extracts the bizarre from the mundane and reveals the strange\, startling brilliance of everyday life. A section of a woman’s brain slips into the toilet bowl\, removing her ability to remember or recognize types of birds — though she is an ornithologist. Medicinal leeches ingest information from fiberoptic cables\, and a new museum sinks into the ground. Across 25 stories\, Øyehaug renovates the form again and again\, confirming Lydia Davis’s observation that her every story is “a formal surprise\, smart and droll.” \nInspired by Charles Baudelaire\, a dreamer and romantic in the era of realism\, Øyehaug revolts against the ordinary\, reaching instead for the wonder to be found in fantasy and absurdity. Brimming with wit\, ingenuity\, and irrepressible joy\, these stories mark another triumph from a dazzling international writer. \nThis event will take place in-person at Scandinavia House. Registration is required; please sign up at the link above. \nAbout the Author\nGunnhild Øyehaug is an award-winning Norwegian poet\, essayist\, and fiction writer. Her story collection Knots was published by FSG in 2017\, followed in 2018 by Wait\, Blink\, which was adapted into the acclaimed film Women in Oversized Men’s Shirts. Her novel Present Tense Machine was published in 2022. Øyehaug lives in Bergen\, where she teaches creative writing. \nAbout the Moderator\nCatherine Lacey is the author of the forthcoming novel Biography of X\, as well as the novels Nobody Is Ever Missing\, The Answers\, and Pew\, and the short story collection Certain American States. She has received a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a Whiting Award\, the New York Public Library’s Young Lions Fiction Award\, and a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship. She has been a finalist for the Dylan Thomas Prize and the PEN/Jean Stein Book Award\, and was named one of Granta’s Best of Young American Novelists. Her essays and short fiction have appeared in The New Yorker\, Harper’s Magazine\, The New York Times\, The Believer\, and elsewhere.

SUMMARY:Woman\, Captain\, Rebel: The Extraordinary True Story of a Daring Icelandic Sea Captain
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, February 18\, join us for a talk with Margaret Willson on her book Woman\, Captain\, Rebel: The Extraordinary True Story of a Daring Icelandic Sea Captain\, out January 21 from Sourcebooks! \nA daring and magnificent historical narrative nonfiction account of Iceland’s most famous female sea captain who boldly defended men and women alike against injustice—and who also solved one of the country’s most notorious robberies. History would have us believe the sea has always been a male realm\, the idea of female captains almost unthinkable. But there is an exception\, so notable she defies any expectation. \nCaptain Thurídur\, born in Iceland in 1777\, lived a life that was both controversial and unconventional. Her first time fishing\, on the open unprotected rowboats of her time\, was at age 11. Soon after\, she audaciously began wearing trousers. She later became an acclaimed fishing captain brilliant at weather-reading and sea craft and consistently brought in the largest catches. In the Arctic seas where drownings occurred with terrifying regularity\, she never lost a single crew member. Renowned for her acute powers of observation\, she also solved a notorious crime. \nIn this extremely unequal society\, she used the courts to fight for justice for the abused\, and in her sixties\, embarked on perilous journeys over trackless mountains. Weaving together fastidious research and captivating prose\, author Margaret Willson reveals Captain Thurídur’s fascinating story\, her extraordinary courage\, intelligence\, and personal integrity. Through adventure\, oppression\, joy\, betrayal\, and grief\, Captain Thurídur speaks a universal voice. Here is a woman so ahead of her times she remains modern and inspirational today. Her story can now finally be told. \n“Meticulously researched and evocatively written\, Woman\, Captain\, Rebel provides not only a captivating insight into 19th-century Iceland\, but also introduces readers to the inspirational\, real-life fishing captain Thurídur\, a tough and fiercely independent woman who deserves to be a role model of determination and perseverance for us all.” — Eliza Reid\, internationally bestselling author of Secrets of the Sprakkar \nAbout the Author\nAnthropologist and writer Margaret Willson has traveled extensively\, in Brazil\, Papau New Guinea\, Mongolia\, Australia\, Europe and Iceland. Her eclectic nonacademic jobs have included abalone diving and being a deckhand on fishing boats off the south coast of Tasmania. She received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from the London School of Economics and is currently an Affiliate Associate Professor with the Departments of Anthropology and Scandinavian Studies at the University of Washington. \nShe is also a Senior Associate Scientist at the Stefánsson Arctic Institute in Iceland. Her previous books include Seawomen of Iceland: Survival on the Edge and Dance Lest We All Fall Down: Breaking Cycles of Poverty in Brazil and Beyond. She lives in Seattle with her partner and their cat Mister.

SUMMARY:Climate Change and the New Polar Aesthetics
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a book talk with author Lisa E. Bloom on her new book Climate Change and the New Polar Aesthetics: Artists Reimagine the Arctic and Antarctica\, out now from Duke University Press! \nIn this new publication\, Bloom considers the ways artists\, filmmakers\, and activists engaged with the Arctic and Antarctic represent our current environmental crises and reconstruct public understandings of them. Bloom engages feminist\, Black\, Indigenous\, and non-Western perspectives to address the exigencies of the experience of the Anthropocene and its attendant Necosystem failures\, rising sea levels\, and climate-led migrations. As opposed to mainstream media depictions of climate change that feature apocalyptic spectacles of distant melting ice and desperate polar bears\, artists such as Katja Aglert\, Subhankar Banerjee\, Joyce Campbell\, Judit Hersko\, Roni Horn\, Isaac Julien\, Zacharias Kunuk\, Connie Samaras\, and activist art collectives take a more complex poetic and political approach. \nIn their films and visual and conceptual art\, these artists link climate change to its social roots in colonialism and capitalism while challenging the suppression of information about environmental destruction and critiquing Western art institutions for their complicity. Bloom’s examination and contextualization of new polar aesthetics makes environmental degradation more legible while demonstrating that our own political agency is central to imagining and constructing a better world. \nBooks will be available for purchase and signing at a discount for attendees. \n“Ever since the publication of Gender on Ice\, Lisa E. Bloom has been one of the most innovative scholars in the field of polar aesthetics and the cultural history of the polar regions… This is a book for dark times\, but it is hopeful\, resilient\, and socially just.” — Klaus Dodds\, Professor of Geopolitics\, Royal Holloway\, University of London \nAbout the Author\nLisa E. Bloom is the author of many feminist books and articles in art history\,  visual culture\, and  cultural studies including her book Gender on Ice: American Ideologies of Polar Expeditions (University of Minnesota Press\, 1993)\, the first critical feminist and postcolonial cultural studies book on the polar region\, and her anthology With Other Eyes: Looking at Race and Gender in Visual Culture (University of Minnesota Press\, 1999) that demonstrates that feminist\, postcolonial and antiracist concerns can be incorporated into the history of art. \nHer latest book\, Climate Change and the New Polar Aesthetics: Artists Reimagine the Arctic and Antarctic (Duke University Press\, 2022) examines aspects of feminist and environmentalist art that conjoins issues routinely kept apart in climate change debates such as the fate of indigenous communities\, resurgent nationalisms\, globalizing capitalism as well as questions of gender\, race\, and persistent postcolonial relations. She has taught and had been a researcher at numerous universities and art schools over the years including the University of California\, Berkeley\, (2018-2022) where she is a scholar-in-residence at the Beatrice Bain Center in the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies.

SUMMARY:Nothing to Laugh About
DESCRIPTION:“Warm\, heartfelt\, and offering surprisingly much to laugh about” — see the touching Norwegian dramedy Nothing to Laugh About /Ingenting å le av (dir. Petter Næss\, Norway\, 2021) this February at Scandinavia House. Successful stand-up comedian Kasper Berntsen has everything a man could ask for: a regular gig at the city’s top comedy club\, a beautiful girlfriend and a fabulous life as a public figure. Until suddenly everything crashes down around him — after losing his comedy gig and girlfriend on the same day\, he’s faced with the worst nightmare imaginable when a doctor informs him that he has incurable cancer. Left with life in shambles\, Kaspar must ask himself: give up or fight on? And in his search for identity he begins to discover new sides of himself — giving new life to his comedy as he uses humor as a disarming and life-giving force. Written by and starring Norwegian comedian Odd-Magnus Williamson (Kon Tiki)\, this heartwarming story explores how to gain newfound self-belief and find laughter again. \n“Nothing to Laugh About takes us on the journey of somebody who\, with nothing to lose\, proceeds to find himself and those aspects of his life most important to him”  (BMA Mag).
