SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: THE PROMISED LAND
DESCRIPTION:*THIS EVENT IS NOW SOLD OUT* \nOn November 1\, join us for a special screening and film talk of the new epic The Promised Land\, selected as Denmark’s contender for Best International Feature for the 2024 Academy Awards\, with director Nikolaj Arcel and Mads Mikkelsen! Nikolaj Arcel and Mads Mikkelsen will hold a film talk and Q&A following the screening. \nIn 18th century Denmark\, Captain Ludvig Kahlen (Mads Mikkelsen) — a proud\, ambitious\, but impoverished war hero — sets out to tame a vast\, uninhabitable land on which seemingly nothing can grow. He seeks to start farming crops\, build a colony in the name of the King\, and gain a noble title for himself. This beautiful but forbidding area also happens to be under the rule of the merciless Frederik De Schinkel\, a preening nobleman who realizes the threat Kahlen represents to his power. Struggling against the elements and local brigands\, Kahlen is joined by a couple who has fled the clutches of the rapacious De Schinkel. As this group of misfits begins to build a small community in this inhospitable place\, De Schinkel swears vengeance\, and the confrontation between him and Kahlen promises to be as violent and intense as these two men. An official selection at  Venice International Film Festival\, Toronto International Film Festival\, and others\, Niklaj Arcel’s (Oscar®-nominated for A Royal Affair) sweeping film has been hailed as “the kind of ravishing\, rousing epic we don’t really get much of anymore” (Bilge Ebiri\, New York Magazine). \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:NINJABABY
DESCRIPTION:This fall at Scandinavia House\, experience Nordic comedy at its darkest with “Svart Humor”! “If there’s a dead body in Denmark\, someone is going to make a joke about it\,” director Anders Jensen once said; Nordic comedies are as known for their deadpan\, dry wit as for their occasionally noir subject matter\, celebrating the “svart/sort” (dark) side of life’s hilarities. \nThe series concludes November 9 with “an uncompromisingly brilliant comedy about unwanted pregnancy\,” Ninjababy (dir. Yngvild Sve Flikke\, Norway\, 2021)! Rakel (Kristine Kujath Thorp) discovers she is six months pregnant after a not-so-romantic one-night stand. At age 23\, she is absolutely not ready to be a mother\, but since abortion is no longer an option\, adoption is the only answer. \n\n\nOut of the drawings in her notebook\, the Ninjababy — “who thinks it can just hide in there\, have a good time and sneak out nine months later” — appears as an animated character\, putting up a fight for his own future. Rakel has to navigate between what she thinks is best for herself and what’s best for the baby — but could it be the same thing? \nBased on the comic novel “Fallteknikk” by Inga Sætre (who has also created the animation in the film) and winner of Best European Comedy at the 2021 European Film Awards and a Crystal Bear at the 2021 Berlin Film Festival\, Ninjababy is a moving and fun film about growing up and the paradox of how unprepared one can be for pregnancy — even at one’s most fertile age. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: REMEMBER TO BLINK — NEW YORK BALTIC FILM FESTIVAL
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS NOW SOLD OUT. \nThe 6th Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America returns this November with the best new films from the Baltic region! In our Opening Night Celebration on November 8\, see the North American Premiere of Remember to Blink\, Austėja Urbaitė’s captivating drama exploring cultural conflicts amid the intricacies of human behavior. \nHaving adopted two Lithuanian children\, French couple Leon (Arthur Igual) and Jacqueline (Anne Azoulay)\, who live in a beautiful house in the French mountains\, enlist young Lithuanian student Gabriele (Dovile Kundrotaite) to serve as an interpreter and nanny. When the children arrive\, however\, their idyllic façade of their new family arrangement gives way to underlying tensions and cultural clashes — the couple might not be familiar with their adopted children’s origins\, leading to conflicts and misunderstandings\, and unearthing the complexities of parenthood and culture. \nDirector Austėja Urbaitė’s debut is a thought-provoking exploration of the subtle dynamics of what it means to become a family. The film skillfully unveils the characters’ multifaceted and irrational traits\, weaving a tapestry of relationships that question the boundaries of culture and identity\, and exposes a form of “Neo-colonialism” reflecting broader cultural conflicts. Urbaitė deftly employs unpredictability of her characters with nuanced performances to maintain viewer engagement\, while cinematographer Julius Sičiūnas juxtaposes the serene natural surroundings with the mounting tension within the confined household.
