SUMMARY:ANTIQUITY BY HANNA JOHANSSON
DESCRIPTION:Read and discuss literature with our Nordic Book Club Online! On June 11\, we’ll be exploring Antiquity by Hanna Johansson\, a queer Lolita story of desire\, power\, obsession\, observation\, and taboo. \nOn a Greek island rich with ancient beauty\, a lonely woman in her thirties upends the relationship between a mother and her teenage daughter. Lust and admiration for Helena\, a chic older artist\, brings Antiquity’s unnamed narrator to Ermoupoli\, where Helena’s daughter\, Olga\, seems at first like an obstacle and a nuisance. But the unpredictable forces of ego and desire take over\, leading our narrator down a more dangerous path\, and causing the roles of lover and beloved\, child and adult\, stranger and intimate to become distorted. As the months go by\, the fragile web connecting the three women nears rupture\, and the ominous consequences of their entanglement loom just beyond a summer that must end. \nWith echoes of Death in Venice\, Call Me by Your Name\, and The Lover\, but wholly original and contemporary\, Antiquity probes the depths of memory\, beauty\, morality\, and the events that arrange our experience of the world. \nRegister

SUMMARY:PREJUDICE & PRIDE | SCREENING & FILM TALK WITH EVA BELING
DESCRIPTION:Join us on June 12 for a screening of Prejudice & Pride – Swedish Film Queer (Fördom & Stolthet\, dir. Eva Beling\, 2022)\, a documentary and rainbow-colored roller coaster ride through the history of Swedish queer cinema! Director Eva Beling will be present for a film talk and Q&A after the screening. \nHow could it possibly take 100 years to see a same-sex kiss in Swedish feature film? Queer people have played many roles throughout the entire history of Swedish film\, but early onscreen portrayals of queerness were often profoundly tragic. In this documentary\, director Eva Beling blends footage from the Swedish Film Institute archives and interviews with many pioneers of Swedish cinema. These include director Marie-Louise Ekman\, writer and performer Jonas Gardell and Rikard Wolff\, whose character Zac in House of Angels was one of the first widely loved queer figures in cinema. She also spoke with other figures about Swedish queer cinema today\, including Mian Lodalen\, Saga Becker\, Gösta Ekman\, Levan Akin\, Ella Lemhagen\, Bruce LaBruce and others. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:ART FROM THE FOG SWEPT ISLANDS | WITH DAGMAR MALENA WINTHER
DESCRIPTION:Join us June 20 for a lecture by Dagmar Malena Winther\, Acting Director of The National Gallery of the Faroe Islands (Listasavn Føroya)! Presented in Fog Swept Islands: Faroe Islands Culture Days alongside the exhibition Fog Swept Cargo\, Winther will discuss the Faroese cultural identity within the contemporary arts landscape. \nThe Faroe Islands – 18 islands in the North Atlantic — are a grain of sand to America’s far-ranging lands and diversity. What does art look like in this small place? While Faroese artists only first received formal education 100 years ago\, today many artists live and practice on the Islands. Artworks can be found in every home and subsea tunnel\, inspired by local life\, culture\, and the forces of nature. Today’s vibrant Faroese contemporary scene holds a wide variety of styles\, expressions and connections to the international artworld. \nJoin us this evening for a fascinating art journey that introduces distinctive works unlike those elsewhere in the world. Winther will also discuss Faroese artistic connections and influences with other countries\, including the U.S. She will also share perspectives on its “national” art scene and humorous or critical angles on life in the North Atlantic. \nRegister
