A Q & A with director Lisa Aschan follows the screening along with a clip and trailer of her new film White People/Det vita folket.

Directed by Lisa Aschan (Sweden, 2011). She Monkeys is a modern western about two young women caught up in temptation, a power struggle, and maddening attraction. When Emma (Mathilda Paradeiser) meets Cassandra (Linda Molin), they initiate a relationship filled with physical and psychological challenges. Emma does whatever it takes to master the rules of their game and lines are crossed as the stakes are raised. Despite this and with devastating results, Emma can’t resist the intoxicating feeling of total control.

Praised by critics and audiences alike, She Monkeys made its domestic premiere in 2011 at the Göteborg Film Festival, where it won the Dragon Award Best Nordic Film and FIRPRESCI Critics Award, and its world premiere at the Berlinale in the Generation 14plus category, where it received special mention from the jury. She Monkeys also won the World Narrative Competition Award at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2011 and Best Film, Best Screenplay, and Best Sound at the Swedish Guldbagge Awards in 2012.

About the Director

Lisa Aschan graduated from The National Film School of Denmark in 2005 and is known for suggestive visual language, naturalistic direction, and unique talent for telling a story with actions instead of words. Aschan sees filmmaking as a way to explore the world, not simply give it form.

She has previously directed a drama series for the Danish TV channel DR1, as well as the shorts In Transit (2006) and Goodbye Bluebird (2007), which both have been shown at festivals around the world. She Monkeys is Aschan’s feature film debut.
