Our popular Summer Jazz Series returns to Scandinavia House! This summer we’re presenting performances from some of Scandinavia’s most talented young jazz musicians, composers, and singers from June 20 through July 11. Join us for a reception on the Volvo Hall terrace starting at 7 PM, followed by the concert at 7:30 PM.

Icelandic bassist & composer Sigmar Matthíasson and fellow performers deliver a mixture of powerful and lyrical music by combining jazz with different genres. At this performance, the group will be performing music from Matthíasson’s debut solo album Áróra (September 2018) as well as brand new compositions.

About the Musicians

Sigmar Matthíasson’s sound is a blend of hardcore groove and colorful melodies with influences ranging from Megadeth and Led Zeppelin to Jaco Pastorius and Ray Brown. Born in Reykjavík, Iceland, Sigmar started playing bass around the age of 16. He was first introduced to jazz when studying at the F.I.H. School of Music. After graduating from that school in 2012, Sigmar furthered his jazz studies at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York, where he studied with Jeff Carney, Reggie Workman and Hal Galper among others. He graduated with honors in the spring of 2016.

Sigmar has been an active performer on the Icelandic music scene for several years, performing and/or recording with many of the most in-demand pop and jazz musicians in Iceland. Matthiasson has performed at international festivals, including London Jazz Festival in the UK, Oslo Jazz Festival in Norway, Jazz Finland Festival in Helsinki, Bern Jazz Festival in Switzerland, Nordic Jazz Festival in Washington D.C. and Reykjavík Jazz Festival in Iceland. His most recent solo project is Áróra, which performed at the Reykjavík Jazz Festival in 2014 and celebrated the release of their self-titled debut album in September 2018, which was recorded at Sigur Rós’ legendary studio Sundlaugin.
