SUMMARY:Swedish: Language and Culture – Remote Learning
DESCRIPTION:TUE—SEP 8\, 2020 THROUGH TUE—DEC 1\, 2020\nTUESDAYS—6:30–8:35 PM\n$699 \n\nThis class will be taking place via remote instruction. \n\n\nScandinavia House promotes the importance of language learning in exploring Nordic culture through classes offered by NYU’s Department of Foreign Languages\, Translation\, and Interpreting. Traditionally held at Scandinavia House\, classes in the fall of 2020 will now be held via remote learning. \nThis course is ideal for students who want to take their Swedish proficiency to the next level. Build upon your existing knowledge of Swedish through targeted grammar practice aimed at facilitating more varied and professional written and spoken self-expression. A key facet of the curriculum is discussion of current topics about Swedish life and culture\, such as work situations\, history\, government\, and societal issues. \n\n\nYou also will be introduced to Swedish literature in the form of prose and poetry by well-known Swedish literary figures\, reading and discussing a short work of fiction to increase your familiarity with colloquial speech patterns and idiomatic expressions. This course is recommended for learners who have completed at least Swedish IV or its equivalent. \nTo request additional information\, attend an information session\, or register\, contact NYU’s Department of Foreign Languages\, Translation\, and Interpreting\, 212-998-7250\, or visit sps.nyu.edu. \n**There will be no class on November 3 (Election Day).** \n\n\nLANGUAGE COURSES AT SCANDINAVIA HOUSE\n\n\n\nScandinavia House sees language as inextricably linked to culture. Partnering with the Center for Applied Liberal Arts (CALA) at New York University School of Professional Studies reinforces this link as part of Scandinavia House’s mission. NYU CALA offers courses in twenty languages including Danish\, Norwegian and Swedish. Finnish and Icelandic can be offered upon request. Whether supporting Scandinavia House members in connecting with their roots through learning the language of their ancestors or family members\, deepening New Yorkers’ cultural understanding\, or facilitating travel through competence in other languages\, courses encourage exploration. \n\n\nThe courses are offered on a semester basis at Scandinavia House. Levels range from beginner to intermediate and advanced. The department has the capacity to open high levels and special sections should there be a demand for such. \nCALA is a national leader in foreign language instruction and all its instructors are experienced in teaching their respective languages to adults. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:The Artist's Wife
DESCRIPTION:Starting FRI—September 25\n$12 \n50% of proceeds will support ASF + Scandinavia House \n\n\n**A link to purchase tickets will be available on September 25.** \n\nScandinavia House is now hosting a virtual cinema presentation of the new film The Artist’s Wife\, starring the internationally acclaimed Swedish actress Lena Olin\, with Strand Releasing. Half of proceeds will go to support ASF and Scandinavia House. \n\nClaire (Lena Olin) lives a domestic life in the Hamptons as the wife of celebrated artist Richard Smythson (Bruce Dern). Once a promising painter herself\, Claire now lives in the shadow of her husband’s illustrious career. But when Richards’ moods become increasingly erratic as he prepares for his final show and he is eventually diagnosed with dementia\, Claire must shield his condition from the art community as his memory and behavior deteriorate\, while working to reconnect him with his estranged daughter and a grandson from a previous marriage. \nChallenged by the loss of her world as she knew it\, Claire must now decide whether to stand with Richard on the sidelines — or step into the spotlight herself. Directed by Tom Dolby (U.S.\, 2019); 95 min. SUMMARY:Always Amber – NewFest 2020
DESCRIPTION:FRI–October 16 through TUE—October 27\n$12 ($10 ASF Members) \nASF Members receive a $2 discount in our weekly emails on October 16 & 23; sign up for the email list here. \n\nThis year\, Scandinavia House is pleased to co-present the new Swedish film Always Amber with NewFest — the New York LGBTQ Film Festival from Friday\, October 16 through Tuesday\, October 27! An invitation into the social-media-driven world of its titular genderqueer character Amber\, Hannah Reinikainen Bergeman and Lia Hietala’s feature directorial debut explores teenage trans/non-binary identity with tact\, compassion\, and clarity\, allowing Amber full agency in chronicling their story. Framed by professionally shot scenes at a doctor’s office and Amber’s own Snapchats\, Instagram Stories\, and DMs\, the directors capture queer and trans teenage angst and complicated relationships in their most authentic\, bold\, and transgressive moments. Throughout this singular cinematic experience\, Amber remains an awe-inspiring and unapologetically themself narrator\, co-cinematographer\, and star — demonstrating what can happen when filmmakers treat documentary “subjects” as participants in their own depictions. \nThe film will be followed by a Q&A. \n\n\nThis year’s New York LGBTQ Film Festival runs October 16 through 27\, 2020\, and features 120+ new films available to view virtually throughout the United States\, topical conversations\, virtual events and more. SUMMARY:The Bell in the Lake by Lars Mytting
DESCRIPTION:**Nordic Book Club will take place as an online meeting** \n\n\nRead and discuss Scandinavian literature in translation as part of our Nordic Book Club\, now online! Each month we select a novel from some of the best Nordic literary voices. Discussions have typically taken place the last Tuesday of the month at Scandinavia House but will now be taking place bi-weekly as an online meeting. Register here to sign up for the meeting; registrants will receive a web link to where the meeting will take place. \nBook club participants will all appear online at the start of the meeting when they log in so that they are able to take part in the conversation. For participants who would prefer not to be visible onscreen\, see an easy tutorial online here on how to set a profile image that will appear onscreen instead. \n\n\nOn October 20\, we’ll be discussing the Norwegian bestseller The Bell in the Lake by Lars Mytting\, who joined us for an online conversation about the book on October 1. \nFor as long as people can remember\, the stave church’s bells have rung over the isolated village of Butangen\, Norway: cast in memory of conjoined twins\, the bells are said to ring on their own in times of danger. When in 1879\, young pastor Kai Schweigaard moves to the village\, young Astrid Hekne  sees a way into a much yearned-for modern life on the arm of the new pastor\, who needs a tie to the community to cull favor for his plan for the old stave church\, with its pagan deity effigies and supernatural bells. But when the pastor makes a deal that brings an outsider — a sophisticated German architect — into their world\, the village and Astrid are caught between past and future\, as dark forces come into play. \nLars Mytting\, bestselling author of Norwegian Wood\, brings his deep knowledge of history\, carpentry\, fishing\, and stave churches to this compelling historical novel\, an international bestseller sold in 12 countries. With its broad-canvas narrative about the intersection of religion\, superstition\, and duty\, The Bell in the Lake  is an irresistible story of ancient times and modern challenges. \n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER
