SUMMARY:Swedish: Language and Culture – Remote Learning
DESCRIPTION:TUE—SEP 8\, 2020 THROUGH TUE—DEC 1\, 2020\nTUESDAYS—6:30–8:35 PM\n$699 \n\nThis class will be taking place via remote instruction. \n\n\nScandinavia House promotes the importance of language learning in exploring Nordic culture through classes offered by NYU’s Department of Foreign Languages\, Translation\, and Interpreting. Traditionally held at Scandinavia House\, classes in the fall of 2020 will now be held via remote learning. \nThis course is ideal for students who want to take their Swedish proficiency to the next level. Build upon your existing knowledge of Swedish through targeted grammar practice aimed at facilitating more varied and professional written and spoken self-expression. A key facet of the curriculum is discussion of current topics about Swedish life and culture\, such as work situations\, history\, government\, and societal issues. \n\n\nYou also will be introduced to Swedish literature in the form of prose and poetry by well-known Swedish literary figures\, reading and discussing a short work of fiction to increase your familiarity with colloquial speech patterns and idiomatic expressions. This course is recommended for learners who have completed at least Swedish IV or its equivalent. \nTo request additional information\, attend an information session\, or register\, contact NYU’s Department of Foreign Languages\, Translation\, and Interpreting\, 212-998-7250\, or visit sps.nyu.edu. \n**There will be no class on November 3 (Election Day).** \n\n\nLANGUAGE COURSES AT SCANDINAVIA HOUSE\n\n\n\nScandinavia House sees language as inextricably linked to culture. Partnering with the Center for Applied Liberal Arts (CALA) at New York University School of Professional Studies reinforces this link as part of Scandinavia House’s mission. NYU CALA offers courses in twenty languages including Danish\, Norwegian and Swedish. Finnish and Icelandic can be offered upon request. Whether supporting Scandinavia House members in connecting with their roots through learning the language of their ancestors or family members\, deepening New Yorkers’ cultural understanding\, or facilitating travel through competence in other languages\, courses encourage exploration. \n\n\nThe courses are offered on a semester basis at Scandinavia House. Levels range from beginner to intermediate and advanced. The department has the capacity to open high levels and special sections should there be a demand for such. \nCALA is a national leader in foreign language instruction and all its instructors are experienced in teaching their respective languages to adults. \nREGISTER

Framed by professionally shot scenes at a doctor’s office and Amber’s own Snapchats\, Instagram Stories\, and DMs\, the directors capture queer and trans teenage angst and complicated relationships in their most authentic\, bold\, and transgressive moments. Throughout this singular cinematic experience\, Amber remains an awe-inspiring and unapologetically themself narrator\, co-cinematographer\, and star — demonstrating what can happen when filmmakers treat documentary “subjects” as participants in their own depictions. \nThe film will be followed by a Q&A. \n\n\nThis year’s New York LGBTQ Film Festival runs October 16 through 27\, 2020\, and features 120+ new films available to view virtually throughout the United States\, topical conversations\, virtual events and more. After a personal crisis\, they decide to take some time off and borrow a friend’s summer house by the sea. What should be a great opportunity for the couple to relax and reconnect instead makes them increasingly resentful as their confined intimacy becomes oppressive. Matters are further complicated when they invite another couple\, Erik and Triin\, to stay with them after a storm destroys their tent. Over dinner\, more and more similarities between the two couples come to the forefront. Not liking what she sees\, Anna decides to distract herself by pretending she’s the owner of the house. As they move deeper into this deceptive game\, real arguments erupt and both couples finally go a step too far. As the storm rages outside and their guests refuse to leave\, Anna and Juhan find themselves cornered. Pretenders is director Vallo Toomla’s first film and premiered at the San Sebastian Film Festival in 2016. (2016\, Estonia / Latvia / Lithuania. In Estonian with English Subtitles) 102 min. \n\n\n \nFoam at the Mouth /Ar putām uz lūpām \nTwo years after losing his leg in a car accident\, former policeman Didzis spends most of his time training his three beloved police dogs: Gina\, Boss and Dargo. Frustrated\, his estranged wife Jana\, a doctor at the local sports school\, embarks upon a risky affair with one of her students. After one of their secret nighttime rendezvous\, Jana hits a rabid wild boar and unwittingly spreads the virus to Didzis’ three dogs. The accident unleashes a series of events in which Didzis’ suspicions and jealousy make him blind to the dogs’ increasing aggression. As the three three members of this toxic love triangle begin to circle one another\, the dogs break free and begin to terrorize the town. Love mixes with fear as Didzis decides to take matters into his own hands. Foam at the Mouth is the thrilling third film of director Jānis Nords (Amateur and Mother\, I Love You\, NYBFF 2018 ). (2017 Latvia / Poland / Lithuania. In Latvian and Russian with English subtitles) 85 min. \n \nInvisible /Nematoma \nAfter spending 10 years in isolation in the Carpathian mountains\, former dancer Jonas decides to re-join society and pretends to be blind in order to enter a televised dance competition. He is paired with Saulė\, and they become the show’s most popular dancers. At the same time another man\, Vytas\, who has also spent 10 years in isolation is released from prison for murdering his wife\, Marija. Past events will not let either of them go as the two men’s stories intertwine and they come ever closer to a violent confrontation with the past. Vytas struggles with the ultimate question – whether to seek revenge\, or forgiveness. Invisible is a visually taught and masterfully edited film that knows how to make every beat count. After its world premiere at the San Sebastian Film Festival in 2019\, Invisible has played at multiple festivals across Europe\, including the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival.  (2019\, Lithuania /Latvia / Ukraine / Spain.  In Lithuanian and Ukrainian with English subtitles) 102 min.

SUMMARY:Monster Party Workshop with Satu Kettunen
DESCRIPTION:This Halloween\, join us for a special workshop as we visit the award-winning illustrator and author Satu Kettunen’s Studio in Helsinki\, Finland to learn about her book Alma’s Monster Party\, a wonderful story about fears and how to conquer them!\n\nAlma’s family has moved to a new house.
