SUMMARY:Swedish: Language and Culture – Remote Learning
DESCRIPTION:TUE—SEP 8\, 2020 THROUGH TUE—DEC 1\, 2020\nTUESDAYS—6:30–8:35 PM\n$699 \n\nThis class will be taking place via remote instruction. \n\n\nScandinavia House promotes the importance of language learning in exploring Nordic culture through classes offered by NYU’s Department of Foreign Languages\, Translation\, and Interpreting. Traditionally held at Scandinavia House\, classes in the fall of 2020 will now be held via remote learning. \nThis course is ideal for students who want to take their Swedish proficiency to the next level. Build upon your existing knowledge of Swedish through targeted grammar practice aimed at facilitating more varied and professional written and spoken self-expression. A key facet of the curriculum is discussion of current topics about Swedish life and culture\, such as work situations\, history\, government\, and societal issues. \n\n\nYou also will be introduced to Swedish literature in the form of prose and poetry by well-known Swedish literary figures\, reading and discussing a short work of fiction to increase your familiarity with colloquial speech patterns and idiomatic expressions. This course is recommended for learners who have completed at least Swedish IV or its equivalent. \nTo request additional information\, attend an information session\, or register\, contact NYU’s Department of Foreign Languages\, Translation\, and Interpreting\, 212-998-7250\, or visit sps.nyu.edu. \n**There will be no class on November 3 (Election Day).** \n\n\nLANGUAGE COURSES AT SCANDINAVIA HOUSE\n\n\n\nScandinavia House sees language as inextricably linked to culture. Partnering with the Center for Applied Liberal Arts (CALA) at New York University School of Professional Studies reinforces this link as part of Scandinavia House’s mission. NYU CALA offers courses in twenty languages including Danish\, Norwegian and Swedish. Finnish and Icelandic can be offered upon request. Whether supporting Scandinavia House members in connecting with their roots through learning the language of their ancestors or family members\, deepening New Yorkers’ cultural understanding\, or facilitating travel through competence in other languages\, courses encourage exploration. \n\n\nThe courses are offered on a semester basis at Scandinavia House. Levels range from beginner to intermediate and advanced. The department has the capacity to open high levels and special sections should there be a demand for such. \nCALA is a national leader in foreign language instruction and all its instructors are experienced in teaching their respective languages to adults. \nREGISTER

Initially ambitious about their plans to transform the desolate and neglected land and raise an heir\, Andres and Krõõt are beset by challenges: nature refuses to bend to their will; an uncooperative neighbor becomes a vicious rival; and Krõõt gives birth to daughter after daughter instead of Andres’ longed-for son. As Andres struggles\, his dream of nurturing a prosperous farm on Robber’s Rise turns into an obsession. And in his desperate search for truth and justice — from the court\, to the tavern\, to the Bible — he may end up sacrificing more than he had ever planned. In 2019\, Truth and Justice was shortlisted for the International Feature Film category at the 92nd Academy Awards.  Directed by Tanel Toom (2019\, Estonia. In Estonian with English subtitles) 146 min. \n\n\n \nOleg /Oļegs \nOleg is a young Russian-speaking butcher from Latvia who doesn’t have Latvian citizenship. With the desire of making more money\, he sets his sights on Europe and eventually arrives in Brussels hoping to get a job at an abattoir. Alone in a new country\, he is unjustly fired and unable to find new work when he falls in with a couple of Polish guest workers\, tempted by their promises of construction work and a passport. Oleg soon comes to realize that he’s in over his head and finds himself in an increasingly claustrophobic position. Gritty and uncompromising\, Oleg highlights the perilous situation that migrant workers and stateless citizens can quickly find themselves in as industrious criminals fill in the gaps in local social systems. Premiering at Directors’ Fortnight as part of the 2019 Cannes Film Festival\, Oleg is director Juris Kursietis’ (Modris) second film.  (2019\, Latvia / Belgium / Lithuania / France.  In English with some Russian\, Polish\, Latvian\, French and Flemish with English Subtitles) 108 min. \n \nThe Lawyer /Advokatas \nLife is slowly passing corporate lawyer Marius by and he spends most of his time at dinner parties and chasing young lovers. After the death of his estranged father\, Marius finds himself looking for answers and finds himself developing a surprising connection with sex-cam worker Ali – a bisexual Syrian refugee stuck in Belgrade. Relieved at finally having something to focus on\, Marius throws himself into helping Ali seek asylum in a more LGBTQ+-friendly country in Europe. Marius travels to Belgrade which deepens the mens’ connection and tests their internal and physical borders. What started as a distraction\, has blossomed into a tricky love affair leading Marius to question his privilege and his priorities. The Lawyer is a unique Lithuanian drama that premiered at the 2020 BFI Flare Film Festival. Directed by Romas Zabarauskas\, (2020 Lithuania.  In Lithuanian and English with English subtitles) 97 min.
