SUMMARY:Virtual Nordic Holiday Craft Workshops: Yarn Tomte
DESCRIPTION:WED—December 16—11 AM (ET) \n*The series will continue on December 23.* \nWatch on Facebook \nThis December\, experience the Nordic holidays with a series of virtual workshops from the Children’s Center! In this series\, learn how Scandinavians prepare for Christmas through programs teaching how to make traditional holiday items such as woven hearts and yarn tomtar. \nIn the second event\, see how to make a yarn tomte! A Swedish tomte (known as a nisse in Denmark or tonttu in Finnish) is one of the most familiar creatures of Scandianavian folklore. Often characterized by long white beards and bright knit caps\, similar to a garden gnome\, they are also typically associated with the winter solstice and holiday season\, and are widespread throughout Nordic homes this time of year! In this craft workshop\, you’ll learn how to make your very own household tomte\, using yarn and other basic craft materials. \nThe event will take place simultaneously as a premiere on both YouTube and Facebook; watch then to chat with us during the presentation on either platform! The series will continue with a final craft tutorial on December 23. \nAn instructions booklet is provided for this and all events; to download the booklet\, please click here. \nSet reminder to watch on YouTube: \n \nSet reminder to watch on Facebook here.

SUMMARY:Virtual Studio Visit with Camilla Vuorenmaa
DESCRIPTION:SUN—December 20—2 PM ET \n**This event will take place via YouTube & Facebook Premiere; check back closer to the date for links/viewing instructions.** \n \nWatch on Facebook \nJoin us on Sunday\, December 20 at 2 PM ET for a Virtual Studio Visit with acclaimed Finnish painter Camilla Vuorenmaa! In this event\,  Vuorenmaa invites ASF into her Helsinki live-work studio to discuss her latest carved wood painting series\, based on her recent exploration into the Spiritualist movement in the United States. With a hybrid sculpture-painting style that requires both time and physical strength to create\, Vuorenmaa challenges the physical and traditional boundaries of painting. Using a style that is rough and unvarnished\, yet endowed with a sensitive brush stroke and striking palette\, her work reveals an expressive\, vibrant approach to eclectic subject matter of myth\, folklore\, and persistent faith in contemporary life. \nThe program will take place as a Virtual Premiere on both Facebook and YouTube; set reminders at the links above to either platform to watch and chat with us during the program. \nThis event is the second in a series of Virtual Studio Tours from Scandinavia House. See the previous tour with Pekka and Teija Isorättyä here.
