Each month we select a novel from some of the best Nordic literary voices. Discussions have typically taken place the last Tuesday of the month at Scandinavia House but will now be taking place bi-weekly as an online meeting. \nBook club participants will all appear online at the start of the meeting when they log in so that they are able to take part in the conversation. For participants who would prefer not to be visible onscreen\, see an easy tutorial online here on how to set a profile image that will appear onscreen instead. \nOn March 16\, we’ll be discussing the book Childhood by Tove Ditlevsen\, which has been recently re-released in translation by Tiina Nunnally as part of the The Copenhagen Trilogy. The trilogy was the subject of a recent panel discussion with Michael Favala Goldman\, Morten Høi Jensen\, Rachel Kushner\, and Ben Lerner\, available to stream here. \nTove knows she is a misfit whose childhood is made for a completely different girl. In her working-class neighborhood in Copenhagen\, she is enthralled by her wild\, red-headed friend Ruth\, who initiates her into adult secrets. But Tove cannot reveal her true self to her or to anyone else. DESCRIPTION:New Nordic Cinema at Scandinavia House returns in a virtual format! Celebrate contemporary Nordic filmmaking with us from home by catching some of the best new films in weekend sessions of contemporary feature films and documentaries. The sixth session of the series from March 19-25 features the film Echo/ Bergmál (Iceland\, 2019; dir. Rúnar Rúnarsson). \nIt’s Christmas time in Iceland\, and as everyone prepares for the holidays\, a peculiar atmosphere seems to take hold of the country. In the middle of the countryside\, an abandoned farm is burning; in a school\, a children’s choir is singing Christmas carols; and in a slaughterhouse\, chickens parade along a rail. In a museum\, a mother argues with her ex-husband on the phone; in a living room\, a young girl convinces her grandmother try out new virtual reality headset; and in a mobile unit\, two nurses comfort an addict who feels alone. Through 56 such scenes\, acclaimed director Rúnar Rúnarsson’s Echo draws a biting and tender portrait of modern society. (80 min. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, March 20 at 11 AM ET\, join the Children’s Center for a family craft session on “The Fox and the Bear”! \nIn this program\, special guest Elina Gyldén (Art Educator\, Amos Rex Museum & National Gallery\, Helsinki) will lead a shadow-puppet craft workshop based on the Finnish folk tale of “The Fox and the Bear”. The fox (kettu in Finnish) is described in these stories to be cunning\, smart\, and careful — much like real-life foxes — where the bear (karhu in Finnish)\, the King of the Forest\, was considered the most respected animal of ancient Finnish forests. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, March 20 at 7 PM ET\, Scandinavian House will present a film talk with director Christina Rosendahl and actor Ulrich Thomsen\, moderated by ASF President Edward Gallagher\, on The Good Traitor /Vores mand I Amerika\, screening to virtual audiences throughout the U.S. from March 18-21. \nIn April 9\, 1940\, Denmark was invaded by Nazi Germany with demands for immediate and unconditional surrender; the government surrendered after a few hours and began cooperating with the Nazis. On the other side of the Atlantic\, Denmark’s ambassador to the United States of America Henrik Kauffmann\, refused to follow the German directives and engineered a rebellious plan.
