SUMMARY:Virtual Studio Visit with Heidi Hankaniemi
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, May 22\, for a virtual studio visit with Finnish artist Heidi Hankaniemi! Based in New York City\, Heidi works primarily with handmade textiles\, embroideries\, lace\, and crochets\, collecting and receiving damaged and discarded handiworks from flea markets and charity shops around the world. With a background in conceptual art\, Heidi appropriates these handmade materials\, created and labored on by generations of women\, and sews them into tapestries and installations. Bringing attention to the labor and care within the domestic environments that shape us\, Heidi honors the original makers of these materials\, while creating new physical\, and emotional bonds by her own hand. \nIn this virtual tour\, Heidi will show viewers her studio in Manhattan\, and describe a weekly pilgrimage to the Chelsea flea market\, while sharing her latest work and installations. \nThe video will premiere at 2 PM ET on May 22 on this page and will remain available to stream here through May 29. See the first tour with Pekka and Teija Isorättyä here\, the second tour with Camilla Vuorenmaa here\, the third tour with Shoplifter/Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir here\, and the fourth tour with Ida Lorentzen here. \nHeidi Hankaniemi was born in Ekenäs Finland\, and now lives and works in New York City. Heidi received her BA (Hons) Degree in Critical Fine Art Practice from Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design\, London\, and went on to a MA History Degree in South East Asian Art at the School of Oriental and African Studies\, University of London. \nHer work has been exhibited throughout Europe and in the U.S.\, including at The Moscow Museum of Modern Art and the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. Her work is in private collections in Europe and America and has been featured in publications ranging from Artnet and Vogue to Hola and Hello!.

DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, May 26\, join us for a virtual book talk on The Employees with author Olga Ravn and translator Martin Aitken. With moderator Katrine Øgaard Jensen\, they’ll discuss the novel\, currently out in translation from Lolli Editions and shortlisted for the 2021 International Booker Prize. \nIn the near-distant future\, millions of kilometers from Earth\, the crew of the Six-Thousand Ship consists of those who were born\, and those who were made; those who will die\, and those who will not. When the ship takes on a number of strange objects from the planet New Discovery\, the crew is perplexed to find itself becoming deeply attached to them\, and human and humanoid employees alike start aching for the same things: warmth and intimacy; loved ones who have passed; shopping and child-rearing; our shared\, far-away Earth\, which now only persists in memory. \nGradually\, the crew members come to see their work in a new light\, and each employee is compelled to ask themselves whether they can carry on as before – and what it means to be truly living. \nStructured as a series of witness statements compiled by a workplace commission\, Ravn’s crackling prose is as chilling as it is moving\, as exhilarating as it is foreboding.
