DESCRIPTION:Explore a selection of Danish literature in English translation with a new nationwide virtual book club! Organized as part of the new National Danish Book Club and Literary Event Series on October 12\, we will discuss Olga Ravn’s The Employees (De anisette) translated by Martin Aitken. \nStructured as a series of witness statements compiled by a workplace commission\, The Employees follows the crew of the Six-Thousand Ship which consists of those who were born\, and those who were made\, those who will die\, and those who will not. When the ship takes on a number of strange objects from the planet New Discovery\, the crew is perplexed to find itself becoming deeply attached to them\, and human and humanoid employees alike start aching for the same things: warmth and intimacy\, loved ones who have passed\, shopping and child-rearing\, our shared\, far-away Earth\, which now only persists in memory. \nThe National Danish Book Club and Literary Event Series is brought to you by American-Scandinavian Foundation\, Scan Design Foundation\, Museum of Danish America\, Northwest Danish Association\, National Foundation for Danish America\, National Nordic Museum\, University of Wisconsin – Madison\, and the University of Washington Scandinavian Studies Department. \nBook Club Discussions will be moderated by Faculty Associate Nete Schmidt from the University of Wisconsin – Madison.

She has won several accolades for her work. Her first feature film\, All Is Forgiven\, won the Louis Delluc Prize for Best First Film in 2007.  Hansen-Løve’s film Father of My Children won the Special Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and Best Script at TIFF 2009. Her 2011 film A Love of Youth received special mentions at the Locarno International Film Festival 2011\, TIFF 2011\, and Telluride Film Festival 2011. \nIn 2014\, Hansen-Løve was awarded the status of Chevalier in the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. In 2016\, she won the Silver Bear for Best Director for her film Things to Come at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival\, as well as becoming a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.I n September 2018\, Hansen-Løve premiered Maya at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival as a part of the Special Presentations section.

DESCRIPTION:On October 16\, as part of a day-long Celebration of Louis Kahn 120 in New York presented with Archtober\, learn about the celebrated Estonian-born architect’s work as an educator! In this lively conversation with Kahn’s student Charles E. Dagit Jr. hosted by award-winning journalist Neeme Raud\, we’ll take a close look at the important role Louis Kahn had as a teacher\, in a talk presented at Scandinavia House in Volvo Hall. The talk will also celebrate Dagit Jr.’s commemorative book Louis I. In 1976 Robert A.M. Stern named him one of the “40 Under 40 American Architects” in A+U Magazine. In 1983 he was elevated to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects\, the youngest architect to that time to be honored as an AIA Fellow. \nDagit’s work has been published in international design magazines including; Architectural Record\, L’Architecture d’Aujourd’Hui\, The Japan Architect\, L’Industria delle Construzioni\, and many others.

With Justine Kurland as moderator\, she’ll discuss this new novel about philanthropist and copper heir William Andrews Clark Jr. and his longtime lover Harrison Post\, out now from Penguin Books Original. This event will take place at Scandinavia House in Volvo Hall at 4 PM ET and will also be live-streamed to virtual audiences; please check back here for broadcast details closer to the date. \nIn the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, the Clark family was famous the country and world over for its vast wealth\, attained through the infamous and corrupt “Copper King of Montana” William Andrews Clark Sr. One of the most well-known men in Los Angeles in the 1920s\, his son William Andrews Clark Jr. was a generous benefactor of many of the city’s institutions\, including the LA Philharmonic\, the Hollywood Bowl\, and the UCLA Clark Library (and interred in Hollywood Forever Cemetery’s Clark Mausoleum). But he also had many secrets — namely a longtime lover named Harrison Post\, who\, until now\, was a shadowy and largely forgotten figure. \nWritten by William Andrews Clark Jr.’s great-grandniece Liz Brown through years of rigorous archival research\, Twilight Man uncovers the fascinating life of Harrison Post\, a former sales clerk whose illicit relationship with Clark ensconced him in a world of privilege and luxury from Gilded Age wealth to the early Hollywood film community — until Clark’s death in 1932\, upon which he inherited a huge fortune that was soon taken from him in a tremendous betrayal. \nUpended by the loss of his lover and livelihood\, Post spent several years in the town of Hellesylt\, Norway\, before being incarcerated under the Nazi occupation; and later continued on to Mexico City — all in search of an inheritance that would ultimately destroy him. Twilight Man is an extraordinary story of untold queer history\, love\, and legacy — how it is shaped and preserved — and the tragedy of one man’s desperation to cling to a past that could not save him. \nBrown and Kurland will discuss the novel and her discovery of Post’s story\, as well as Post’s time spent in Norway and his devotion to the country. Registration is required for attendance at Scandinavia House; sign up at the link above.
