SUMMARY:My Name is Susan
DESCRIPTION:This June at Scandinavia House\, see a live reading of the Scandinavian-American Theater Company’s new production My Name Is Susan /Jeg Hedder Bente. In a life-affirming story by Rikke Wölck about four women and their strong and loving friendship\, at the age of 55\, Susan is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Her group of girlfriends gather around her until her death\, there to support Susan and each other through the tragic time\, which gives them an opportunity to reflect on the lives they’ve lived and the choices they’ve made. Through laughter and tears\, Susan’s diagnosis changes them all. DESCRIPTION:“A film that celebrates imperfection in an age that increasingly\, impossibly demands perfection” (Eye for Film) — On June 15\, see the Norwegian coming-of-age film Psychobitch (dir. Martin Lund\, Norway\, 2019) at Scandinavia House!  \nFifteen-year-old Frida is the misfit at her middle school in the small city of Gjøvik\, a class outsider that all the other kids agree is “so weird.” Martin\, on the other hand\, does nearly everything he can to be exemplary — though often overburdened by his success. When they’re paired up as study partners\, Martin sees it as an opportunity to prove what a great guy he is\, until he realizes that Frida has no intention of being “fixed” by the class golden boy. As she challenges him and puts his patience to the test\, sparks begin to fly\, creating a turbulent relationship that also becomes something exciting\, challenging\, and completely new for both. His debut feature Twigson Ties the Knot (2011) premiered at the Berlinale Generation and remains among Norway’s biggest ever box office hit. He went on to write and direct The Almost Man (2012) which had its world premiere at Karlovy Vary IFF\, winning the Crystal Globe for Best Film.  \nHe also created the TV series The Games\, winner of Best Series at the 2014 Prix Jeunesse\, and was nominated for a Kidscreen award in 2015. It has since been sold to more than 40 countries. His latest work is the feature film Psychobitch (2019)\, which premiered at Berlinale and was the recipient of the ArteKino Festival Audience Award.

It has been said that “the trio’s real thrill lies in its unique balance and those breathtaking moments in their nuanced playing” (CD Journal\, Feb 2016).  Joonas Haavisto is one of the most notable jazz musicians from the Nordic jazz scene. He joined the world-famous Steinway Artist roster in 2017. Joonas has played as a soloist with chamber orchestras and big bands. In his compositions\, Haavisto combines memorable themes with multilayered\, surprising rhythmic motifs and sophisticated harmonies. Joonas has also composed music for various groups from the trio to big bands. In 2016 he composed and played the piano music for The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki movie\, which won the Un Certain Regard Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.  \nAntti Lötjönen is one of the busiest bass players in Finland and has already toured with Jeff “Tain” Watts and Kurt Rosenwinkel. Drummer Joonas Riippa is known for his imaginative style. He plays in groups led by Jimi Tenor\, Kalle Kalima and Mikko Innanen. \nJoonas Haavisto Trio released their fifth album Offshore in 2019.
