In this course for those who are still new to Swedish but have a basic knowledge of sentence structure\, greetings\, times and numbers\, and basic vocabulary\, students will learn sentence structure in sentences with more than one verb\, placement of adverbs\, plural endings\, conjugation of adjectives\, objective and possessive pronnounncs\, and the past tense. Various cultural aspects will also be highlighted during the course. This class will take place as hybrid learning\, with classes offered at Scandinavia House and online via Zoom. \nAt the end of the semester students will know: \n\nHow to structure sentences with more than one verb\nThe conjugation of adjectives\nThe past tense\n\nStudents will be able to: \n\nTalk about their families and things they’ve done or do\, as well as make future plans and purchase items.\n\nPrerequisite: Beginner Swedish 1 level or equivalent. Medicinal leeches ingest information from fiberoptic cables\, and a new museum sinks into the ground. Across 25 stories\, Øyehaug renovates the form again and again\, confirming Lydia Davis’s observation that her every story is “a formal surprise\, smart and droll.” \nInspired by Charles Baudelaire\, a dreamer and romantic in the era of realism\, Øyehaug revolts against the ordinary\, reaching instead for the wonder to be found in fantasy and absurdity. Her story collection Knots was published by FSG in 2017\, followed in 2018 by Wait\, Blink\, which was adapted into the acclaimed film Women in Oversized Men’s Shirts. Her novel Present Tense Machine was published in 2022. Øyehaug lives in Bergen\, where she teaches creative writing. \nAbout the Moderator\nCatherine Lacey is the author of the forthcoming novel Biography of X\, as well as the novels Nobody Is Ever Missing\, The Answers\, and Pew\, and the short story collection Certain American States. She has received a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a Whiting Award\, the New York Public Library’s Young Lions Fiction Award\, and a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship. The series presented by Scandinavia House and Per Tengstrand welcomes audiences back to Victor Borge Hall beginning in October for another season of its popular performances.
