DESCRIPTION:On March 30\, join us for a performance and celebration with New York-based Finnish singer-pianist Eeppi Ursin on the release of her new album\, My Finnish Soul! Bringing well-known Finnish traditional folk and rock classics to life with soul and jazz tones\, Ursin’s new album features songs such as Säkkijärven Polkka\, Myrskyn jälkeen\, Pohjois-Karjala and Moottoritie on kuuma performed with her delicate\, stripped-down and epically strong interpretations. \nA tribute to a major three-year period in Ursin’s musical career\, My Finnish Soul is inspired in part by the artist’s virtual Love Boat concert concept created after she moved to New York\, which became a hit particularly among expatriate Finns during the pandemic. In the beginning of 2022 Ursin was chosen as Performer of the Year by Finlandia Foundation National and embarked on a U.S. tour including 17 concert in 13 cities — taking her all the way to Alaska — and received American Scandinavian Society’s Cultural Grant of 2022. \nHer new album is based on songs requested by Love Boat audiences as well as concert favorites from the U.S. tour\, and is a must-have nostalgia album for any Finnish expat. \nTickets to this event must be purchased in advance online at the link above. \nThis program is co-hosted by Finlandia Foundation New York — Metropolitan Chapter. \n \nAbout Eeppi Ursin\nEeppi Ursin is a New York-based platinum-selling\, award-winning singer\, songwriter and pianist originally from Finland. Ursin is known for her angelic-strong voice and exceptional skill set ranging from top-class performance to writing music for various groups. Her stage presence combines warmth\, style\, humor and virtuosity. Her recordings and performances as a singer vary from pop\, jazz\, dance\, a cappella and children’s music. \nThroughout her career she has captivated audiences all around the world performing as a vocal soloist at prestigious venues with acclaimed artists such as trumpeter Leroy Jones and Spirit of New Orleans\, Vocal Ensemble Club For Five\, and UMO Jazz Orchestra\, to name a few. Eeppi Ursin also collaborates with renowned theaters and modern opera ensembles as a composer and arranger. \nIn February 2022 Eeppi Ursin releases her fourth solo album Speechless\, which is a luscious combination of pop\, soul and singer-songwriter traditions. Prior to that she has released three solo albums where she stands out as an artist with a strong and unique yet catching pop sound. Her albums with critical reviews are: Violet (Buckshotmusic 2005)\, Yellow Page Girl (Buckshotmusic 2009) and Jäljet (Luomusic 2017) followed by numerous radio hit-singles. In addition to her solo albums Eeppi appears on over 40 recordings of which five are platinum- or gold-selling albums. \nIn 2022 Eeppi Ursin is chosen as Performer of the year by Finlandia Foundation National – a nomination that sent her performing at venues all around the United States. In 2014 she was chosen to perform as the soloist at the President’s Independence Day Reception in Finland. In 2001 she won the 1st prize in the Lady Summertime international jazz vocal competition.

DESCRIPTION:SUNDAYS—11:20 AM-1 PM (virtual)\nApril 2 through June 11\, 2023\n$499 ($449.10 ASF Members) \nLearn the Nordic languages in classes offered this spring at Scandinavia House! As the student approaches intermediate level in this course held remotely via Zoom\, study begins to shift focus to more conversation. This semester the students learn about the body and illnesses\, while also working intensely with presentation and how to compare things; introducing definite form superlative\, as well as frequency and short answers. Cultural aspects of living\, health and work culture will be highlighted during the course. \nAt the end of the semester\, students will know: \n\nPresentation with the verbs stand/ sit /lie\nDefinite form superlative\nExpressions and prepositions for frequency\n\nStudents will be able to: \n\nTalk about how they feel physically\, explain how they live\, describe and compare things\, conduct short conversations where there is an exchange of information and give instructions.\n\nPrerequisite: Swedish Advanced Beginner 2 or equivalent. Instructions for remote learning will be emailed upon registration.
