SUMMARY:THE ROCKS WILL ECHO OUR SORROW | VIRTUAL TALK WITH ELIN ANNA LABBA & MATHILDE MAGGA
DESCRIPTION:Join us on February 25 for a virtual book talk with Sámi author and journalist Elin Anna Labba on her book The Rocks Will Echo Our Sorrow! With moderator Mathilde Magga\, she’ll discuss her research and writing on the forced displacement of the Indigenous Sámi from Norway and Sweden in the early 20th century\, told through a remarkable blend of historical reportage\, memoir and lyrical imagining that was awarded Sweden’s August Prize for Best Nonfiction in 2020. This event is co-presented with National Nordic Museum in Seattle and will take place online. *A Zoom link will be emailed to all attendees immediately after ticket purchase.* \nMore than a hundred years have passed since the Sámi were forcibly displaced from their homes in northern Norway and Sweden\, a hundred years since Elin Anna Labba’s ancestors and relations drove their reindeer over the strait to the mainland for the last time. The place where they lived has remained empty ever since. We carry our homes in our hearts\, Labba shares\, citing the Sámi poet Áillohaš. How do you bear that weight if you were forced to leave? Labba travels to the lost homeland of her ancestors to tell of the forced removal of the Sámi in the early 20th century and to reclaim a place in history\, and in today’s world\, for these Indigenous people of northern Scandinavia. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:'ROUND MIDNIGHT | WITH MAXINE GORDON & RICHARD BRODY
DESCRIPTION:On February 26\, in coordination with our ongoing exhibition Nordic Utopia?\, join us for a screening and film talk on the 1986 classic ‘Round Midnight\, a musical drama starring Dexter Gordon! Maxine Gordon\, the widow of the late jazz legend and author of his biography Sophisticated Giant: The Life and Legacy of Dexter Gordon (University of California Press)\, will be present for a film talk with film critic Richard Brody of the New Yorker. \n‘Round Midnight is a love letter from director Bertrand Tavernier to the heyday of bebop and the Black American musicians who found refuge in the smoky underground jazz clubs of 1950s Paris. In a sui generis\, Oscar-nominated fusion of performer and character\, legendary saxophonist Dexter Gordon plays Dale Turner\, a brilliant New York jazz veteran whose music aches with beauty but whose personal life is ravaged by addiction. Searching for a fresh start in Paris\, Turner strikes up an unlikely friendship with a struggling single father and ardent jazz fan (François Cluzet) who finds his life transformed as he attempts to help the musician. \nHerbie Hancock’s evocative\, Oscar-winning score sets the mood for this definitive jazz film\, a bittersweet opus that glows with lived-in\, soulful authenticity. Round Midnight was also nominated for Best Academy Award for Best Actor for Gordon’s performance and a winner of numerous other awards. \nPurchase Tickets
