DESCRIPTION:Learn about Nordic art in this hands-on\, in-person drawing course pairing brief informal lectures on celebrated Nordic artists with guided transcription and drawing exercises. Each 2.5-hour session\, led by artist Charity Baker\, will begin with a 30-minute artist overview\, followed by demonstrations and 1.5 hours of drawing directly from works using graphite\, charcoal\, ink\, or colored pencils. This week\, we’ll turn our focus to Norway. \nThis adult art workshop will deepen participants’ familiarity with key Scandinavian artists and art movements from 5 countries. Weekly classes can be taken individually or as a complete group to study historic and contemporary Scandinavian approaches to line\, tone\, composition\, and texture. \nThis workshop is part of a 6-session series; you can choose between single tickets or a ticket bundle. DESCRIPTION:Learn the Nordic languages in classes offered in-person and virtually at Scandinavia House! This course is for absolute beginners. \nIn this beginner’s course\, you will build your Norwegian vocabulary\, pronunciation\, and grammar skills\, while also learning about Norwegian culture and life. By the course’s end\, you should be able to conduct simple conversations in Norwegian. Students are welcome to bring facts they know about Norway into class discussions. \nYou will get to practice small conversations and reading in class\, and there will be a focus on pronunciation and certain Norwegian vowels and sounds which may be new to your ear. There will also be at-home assignments focusing on reading\, writing\, and grammar\, as well as an optional end-of-semester presentation. Outside of class\, students are encouraged to watch Norwegian shows/movies\, read children’s books\, and have podcasts on in the background. \nThis hybrid class will be held both in-person and via Zoom; in-person attendance for the first four classes is highly recommended. Classes take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 6–7 PM beginning September 29 through December 10. \n*Please note that there will be no classes the week of Thanksgiving\, November 26.* \nNo prerequisites required; instructions for remote learning will be emailed upon registration. DESCRIPTION:Learn the Nordic languages this fall in classes offered at Scandinavia House! \nContinuing from Norwegian 4 or 5\, this course will expand and refine your speaking\, listening\, reading\, and writing skills as you deepen your knowledge of Norwegian culture. Hone in on your comprehension\, fluency\, and accuracy as you engage more confidently in conversations and discussions with your classmates and teacher\, further expanding your vocabulary and mastering more complex grammatical structures. Through the study of themes related to daily life\, students are encouraged to talk about their own experiences in Norwegian. In-depth focus will be given to pronunciation\, Norwegian structure\, tone\, and flow. There will also be weekly at-home exercises\, a film\, and more\, focusing on listening\, reading\, writing\, and grammar\, as well as an end-of-semester presentation which focuses on creativity\, content\, and delivery. \nStudents are strongly encouraged to watch and read Norwegian news and books\, shows and movies\, and to listen to podcasts/audio books\, several times a week\, to be as immersed as possible in the Norwegian language\, thus advancing their fluency and listening skills. \nStudents should be comfortable leading conversations in Norwegian\, using the simple past tense and present perfect. They should have knowledge of regular and irregular verbs\, as well as their irregularities and rules. They should also be able to use indefinite\, definite\, and plural forms of masculine\, feminine\, and neuter nouns; conjugate adjectives; and apply intermediate Norwegian sentence structure\, including “inversion.”  \nThis hybrid class will be held both in-person and via Zoom; in-person attendance for the first four classes is highly recommended. SUMMARY:FELTED NESTING BOWLS | WORKSHOP WITH HILARY SNELL
DESCRIPTION:Create your own felted nesting bowls in this workshop series led by Scandinavia House’s veteran knitter Hilary Snell! \nIn this 4-part series\, participants will learn how to cast on and knit in the round on double pointed needles to make a small\, knitted bowl. The first class will focus on the basics of how to use double pointed needles\, and the following classes will be spent following a simple pattern. Once the knitting is done\, students will take the bowls home to wash and felt them into household art! \nMaterials needed: \n• 1-2 skeins of Cascade 220 yarn (2 skeins are necessary for a contrast stripe on the bowl; if not\, just 1 skein will do). Whatever yarn you buy\, it must be 100% wool\, worsted or thicker. \n• A set of No. 10 US double pointed needles (dpns) \nStudents must feel very comfortable knitting and be willing to stretch into a new skill using double pointed needles. Skills required: casting on\, knitting\, decreasing stitches\, casting off.
