SUMMARY:JUST LOOK UP | SCREENING + FILM TALK
DESCRIPTION:On November 30\, Scandinavia House presents a screening and film talk of the defiant\, propulsive climate documentary Just Look Up\, a Danish qualifier for Best Documentary Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards. Directors Emma Wall and Betsy Hershey and producer Signe Byrge Sorensen will be present for a Q&A following the screening. \n\n\n\nHaving lived through decades of stagnant government response to sedate climate change protests\, Climate Defiance and founder/executive director Michael Greenberg pivot toward a different tack. This organization of young activists weasels their way into business conferences and crashes public and private events in order to nonviolently — but often wildly confrontationally — denounce the fossil fuel CEOs and politicians under the industry’s influence. Taking cues from the shock civil disobedience strategies of prior direct-action movements\, they aim to make these contentious and viral engagements impossible for today’s media ecosystem to ignore. \nDirectors Emma Wall and Betsy Hershey follow Greenberg and his fellow activists in their actions\, their crises\, and their breakthroughs. They share a desperation over the apathetic attitude toward the climate\, but that does not mean they agree on everything. With their non-violent actions\, they shake society awake and create viral waves on social media. And in Just Look Up\, this is fuelled musically by the likes of Chappell Roan\, Doechii and Billie Eilish – voices that\, like Greenberg himself\, speak on behalf of a generation that wants change now. \n\n\n\nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:THE SECRET READING CLUB OF KABUL | NORDIC & BALTIC OSCAR CONTENDERS
DESCRIPTION:On December 2\, Scandinavia House presents a special screening and director talk of a Finnish qualifier for Best Documentary Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards: the powerful documentary The Secret Reading Club of Kabul. \nIn Taliban-controlled Afghanistan\, where women are denied the right to study\, work\, and speak freely\, a group of young women make a radical choice: they read. Inspired by Anne Frank\, they secretly form a reading club and begin writing their own diaries — not as victims\, but as witnesses. The Secret Reading Club becomes an act of resistance: documenting their lives as a timeless defense of humanity\, beyond borders or eras. \nPartially filmed by the women themselves\, The Secret Reading Club of Kabul is an intimate and confidential testimony to the power of art to keep hope and humanism alive. It is also a moving declaration of love for literature and for the act of reading itself.  The story is interwoven with director Shakiba Adil’s own journey. As a girl\, she grew up under the first Taliban regime\, and after the fall of the Taliban\, she became the first woman to appear on Afghan television. After being forced to flee her homeland twice\, she has now dedicated her film to the new generation facing the same oppression she herself has endured. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:HOW TO DIVORCE DURING THE WAR | NORDIC & BALTIC OSCAR CONTENDERS
DESCRIPTION:On December 3\, Scandinavia House presents a special screening featuring Lithuania’s official entry for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards: the “smart\, dryly humorous” and widely lauded How to Divorce During the War. \nVilnius\, 2022. High-flying executive Marija chooses the worst possible moment to inform her husband Vytas she wants a divorce: just one day before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Suddenly the couple must navigate separating in the middle of a refugee and mid-life crisis. As the reason for their divorce gradually becomes clear\, the dissolution of the marriage and the turmoil of world events creates conflicts and opportunities for them both—and for their ever-observant young daughter. Packed with surprises along with much heartache and soul searching\, Andrius Blaževičius’ nuanced and timely family drama skillfully depicts the fallout of a marriage against the backdrop of extraordinary events with humor and compassion. \n“A subtly searing comedy… both empathetic and surgical.” (Variety) \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:BUILD THE CHAIR. MEET THE DESIGNER.
DESCRIPTION:Pull up a seat\, or rather\, build one. In this intimate workshop\, JOY founder and designer Fredrik Paulsen guides a small group through assembling a JOY chair by hand\, piece by piece. \nWhile you build\, Fredrik shares the thinking behind the design: why the chair looks the way it does\, where form gives way to function (and the other way around)\, and what each decision means. Along the way\, we’ll ask the bigger questions. What is a chair actually for? And how does your relationship to an object change when you’ve put it together yourself? \nYou’ll leave with a new perspective on the everyday objects around you\, and the satisfaction of having built something with your own hands. No experience needed\, only curiosity.

SUMMARY:JUL: NORDIC BALTIC DESIGN — OPENING RECEPTION AND SÄLÄ MAGAZINE LAUNCH PARTY
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an opening celebration of Jul: Nordic Baltic Design at Scandinavia House with a launch party for the Issue 03 of Sälä Magazine. \nSälä is an independent magazine on Finnish design\, published since 2025 by the Helsinki-based non-profit association Saelae. In Finnish\, sälä means odds and ends\, the miscellaneous things that gather on shelves and in drawers. The magazine approaches design with the same openness\, from everyday objects to the people who make them.  \nEach issue is built around a theme that looks at the field from a different angle. Much of the content comes through an open call\, so emerging designers appear alongside established names. Sälä’s tone is curious and encouraging\, and it treats design as something with real consequences for society.  \nIssue 03\, Nourishment\, was published in August 2026. It explores the concrete and abstract ways design sustains our minds\, bodies and environment\, with contributions from Hanna Anonen\, Antrei Hartikainen\, Laura Väinölä and Nikari\, among many others.  In the exhibition Jul: Nordic Baltic Design\, the objects on Sälä’s table are a small\, curated selection from the issue\, each one featured on its pages. Issue 04\, Nurture\, follows in fall 2027.  \nSälä is published in English and made by Mimosa Tast (executive producer and design consultant)\, Amanda Sandell (editor-in-chief) and Peppi-Lotta Heinonen (art director).  \nsalamagazine.com · @sala.magazine
