SUMMARY:THE JENNY LIND BOWL: A SWEDISH NATIONAL DAY CELEBRATION
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Swedish National Day with us on June 6 with a tasting\, design and learning event based on the legendary Jenny Lind bowl! In this event with AO Glass\, Björk Cafe & Bistro and BonBon Candy\, participants will learn the history behind the design work inspired by “The Swedish Nightingale\,” one of the most famous opera singers of the 19th century. The event will also feature a performance by soprano Sara Beth Pearson of Jenny Lind’s signature aria “Casta Diva\,” and will be accompanied by Swedish drinks\, snacks and treats from Björk and BonBon. \nAll ticketholders will receive their own AO Glass bowl (retail $45)\, with a special engraving marking the day! \nWhen Rich Arentzen & Tove Ohlander at AO Glass purchased their giant hydraulic press from Fenton Glass Factory in West Virginia\, they were given an old metal mold to practice their technique of pressed glass. Unknowingly\, they had stumbled across a piece of Swedish-American operatic history—after discovering the opera singer’s name etched onto the mold\, they discovered that it had been created in the 1940s in her audience. Since then\, they went on to launch their own line of glass bowls designed on the historic mold. \nThis event will share the history and design work behind creating the bowls\, bringing together glass\, food\, music\, history\, and Swedish culture. It will also honor the significance of this year’s Swedish National Day\, as Sweden celebrates 250 years of American independence and the deep\, enduring ties between Sweden and the United States—including those of the famed “Swedish Nightingale\,” whose 1850-52 tour of America launched her worldwide fame while introducing Nordic music traditions to the U.S. and shaping the future of American entertainment. \nTreats will include food and drinks from Björk and treats from BonBon—New York’s own Swedish candy maker\, who will introduce two new Moomin candy variations! The event will also highlight how Swedish candy and Swedish glass are part of the same larger story: traditions that continue to evolve\, travel\, and find new audiences. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:THE LOVE THAT REMAINS | NEW NORDIC CINEMA
DESCRIPTION:On June 3\, see Icelandic director Hlynur Pálmason’s tender\, quirky family drama The Love That Remains! \nCharting the gradual evolution of a family in the midst of an irreparable fracture\, The Love That Remains is a poignant\, crisply pointillistic domestic drama that observes life’s changes with humor and whimsy\, set against the majestic\, ever-shifting Icelandic landscape. Visual artist Anna (Saga Garðarsdóttir) and fisherman Magnús (Sverrir Guðnason) were teenage sweethearts but have recently grown apart\, and Magnús has moved out of the house. As long as the newly estranged parents put on a good face\, the children—and their adorable sheepdog Panda (who won the prestigious Palme Dog award at Cannes)—seem to take the split in stride. Yet as Magnús becomes increasingly alienated from his domestic life\, harsh reality can’t help but bubble to the surface. \nHlynur Pálmason’s follow-up to his austere 19th-century drama Godland is a “constantly surprising” film with an immaculate sense of framing and pacing—and an evocative\, dulcet piano score by Harry Hunt—dotted with idiosyncratic flights of fancy that never detract from the central emotional authenticity. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:THE FINNISH FRONT LINE | GORDON F. SANDER AND CONSUL GENERAL OF FINLAND JARMO SAREVA
DESCRIPTION:Join us on June 2 for a discussion and presentation on The Finnish Front Line: Kekkonen\, Kennedy\, and Khrushchev’s Cold War Showdown with author Gordon F. Sander and Consul General of Finland Jarmo Sareva! \nThe Finnish Front Line is a historical biography of Urho Kekkonen\, the eighth and longest-serving president of Finland. The most controversial as well as the most misunderstood figure in Finnish history\, Kekkonen governed Finland for 25 years from 1956–81. \nGordon F. Sander focuses on Kekkonen’s pivotal first term as president\, which was bracketed by two crises that together formed the template for both Finland’s relationship with the Soviet Union from 1956 through the fall of the USSR\, and Kekkonen’s own “special” relationship with Moscow: the Night Frost crisis of 1957\, which derived from the Kremlin’s desire to exert greater influence on Finnish politics\, and the Note Crisis of 1961\, which coincided with the great Berlin crisis of 1961\, and occurred when Moscow suddenly invoked the clause in the 1948 Finnish-Soviet treaty that entitled the Kremlin to call for mutual discussions between the Finnish and Soviet militaries and was perceived as a threat to Finnish independence. Thinking this might presage a Soviet invasion of Finland\, a distressed Kekkonen was able to resolve the crisis by flying to Siberia to meet with his erstwhile friend Nikita Khrushchev—who may well have precipitated the crisis in order to insure Kekkonen’s reelection. \nOut now from Cornell University Press\, The Finnish Front Line centers an overlooked chapter of the Cold War as well as a revealing if forgotten chapter of the presidency of John Kennedy and his secret offer to help Kekkonen\, which the latter rejected\, ultimately to avoid making Finland into next front of the Cold War. \nRegister

SUMMARY:TWO PROSECUTORS | NEW BALTIC CINEMA
DESCRIPTION:On May 27\, see the enthralling\, Baltic-produced historical drama Two Prosecutors! Based upon a long-unpublished novella by Soviet gulag survivor Georgy Demidov\, Two Prosecutors paints a hypnotic\, chilling\, blackly comic portrait of the mechanisms of Great Purge-era tyranny\, with a potent contemporary resonance. \nSummoned with a blood-written note smuggled out of a prison block\, an idealistic state lawyer (Alexander Kuznetsov) pushes past the prison’s leery authorities to interview an elderly\, broken-down Bolshevik (Aleksandr Filippenko). The young attorney\, determined to expose the miscarriages of justice that landed the man in confinement\, finds the eye of the state turned on him instead\, as an ever-tightening net encircles his investigation. Set at the height of the Great Purge and drenched in the paranoia of Stalin’s police state\, filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa’s latest triumph is a chilling\, Kafkaesque thriller about the impunity of power and matter-of-fact horrors of fascism. \n“Loznitsa holds you rapt with brutal faces\, restless camera work\, meticulous filmmaking\, shivers of bitter wit\, and scenes of characters just talking that set your heart to racing. This is the kind of international title that enriches American moviegoing life.” (Manohla Dargis\, The New York Times) \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:SEX
DESCRIPTION:“A playful\, insightful character study”—On May 20th\, see SEX\, Norwegian director Dag Johan Haugerud’s second installment of the widely acclaimed Oslo Trilogy! \nAn ambitious trilogy from Norwegian novelist/filmmaker Dag Johan Haugerud\, LOVE–SEX–DREAMS are three distinct feature films linked by their themes of nontraditional intimacy\, but need not be seen in any particular order. In SEX\, two male-identified colleagues who are happily married to women share candidly their secrets: one reveals his unprecedented recent sexual encounter with another man; the other is haunted by a recurring dream featuring David Bowie and his own gender fluidity. Both men — shockingly yet with great sensitivity — seek transparency and understanding with their wives. SEX thus envisions honest\, warm-hearted possibilities for gender expansiveness within heterosexual monogamy\, while also enacting the intricacy of an authentic and generous love. \n“Superbly acted. The film is laced with dry humor but also poignancy and notes of melancholy. [Turns] the male character study on its head with a gentle subversiveness.” (David Rooney\, The Hollywood Reporter) \nPurchase Tickets \n

SUMMARY:BEGINNERS' KNITTING WITH HILARY SNELL
DESCRIPTION:Learn the knitting basics in a workshop led by Scandinavia House’s veteran knitter Hilary Snell! \nThe long-term benefits of knitting are widely recognized. After learning these skills\, you’ll be able to practice independently to make any projects you wish. Participants should bring size 9 US straight needles and some worsted weight yarn — we’ll provide a safe and friendly atmosphere to learn a new life-long skill! \nRegister

SUMMARY:NEXT IN NORDIC AMERICAN ARCHITECTURE: RESILIENCE MEETS WELLBEING
DESCRIPTION:Reflecting on Nordic design’s pivotal role in Modernism in America during the 20th century\, we turn again to the Nordic tradition for its resilient building strategies for climate action and wellbeing that offer tools for today and into the future. The four-part architecture series Nordic American Connections: Conversations on Architecture and Design engages contemporary Nordic and American architects and designers\, highlighting their sustainable design approaches with an emphasis on award-winning projects that shape the American landscape. \nThe fourth panel of the series\, marking Scandinavia House’s 25th Anniversary\, will close the series with contemporary Nordic American architects focusing on the challenges they face as designers in a rapidly changing environment—AI and technology\, economic volatility\, climate vulnerability—and what’s next for future practice. \nThese design leaders will highlight their firms’ approaches to innovation\, research and collaboration\, and cross-cultural influences used in their work. They will share strategies embodied in Nordic design for resilience and wellbeing: use of mass timber and natural materials\, alternative methods of construction\, community building and ‘complete design’. \nParticipants include Daniel Baumann\, Principal and Design Director at Henning Larsen; Daniel Sundlin\, partner at BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group; and Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter\, Director of Architecture for Communities Los Angeles (ACLA). The program will be moderated by Susan Chin of DesignConnects. \nThe panel is organized by ASF with Susan Chin in collaboration with the American Institute of Architects New York\, and American Institute of Architects Continental Europe. \nTickets are now available HERE. \nAIANY Continuing Education Credits are approved for this session; attendees receive 1.5 Learning Units | 1.5 HSW credits. SUMMARY:LOVE
DESCRIPTION:“Utterly enrapturing”—On May 13th\, see LOVE\, Norwegian director Dag Johan Haugerud’s first installment of the widely acclaimed Oslo Trilogy! \nAn ambitious trilogy from Norwegian novelist/filmmaker Dag Johan Haugerud\, LOVE–SEX–DREAMS are three distinct feature films linked by their themes of nontraditional intimacy\, but need not be seen in any particular order. LOVE focuses on two colleagues at an Oslo hospital — Marianne\, a straight (and straitlaced) doctor\, and Tor\, a gay male nurse. Both single\, they cross paths by chance after hours and confide in each other: Marianne confesses her desire to be more adventurous and open in her encounters with men; Tor shares his fatigue with Grindr hook-ups. Their conversations form the heart of exploration of desire and emotional fulfillment. \n“Dag Johan Haugerud’s gently humanistic drama is one of those films that feels akin to a prism\, refracting its theme into the array of colors it contains…it’s so beautiful that you want to just keep dwelling in its world.” (Alissa Wilkinson\, The New York Times) \nPurchase Tickets \n

SUMMARY:THE SQUARE | SILVER ANNIVERSARY RESCREENS
DESCRIPTION:On May 6\, see The Square to wrap up our series of Silver Anniversary Rescreens! First screened at Scandinavia House in 2018\, this gripping sociological suspense story by director Ruben Östlund dives into the ethics of moral responsibility\, privilege\, and media sensationalism. \n\nChristian is the respected curator of a contemporary art museum\, a divorced but devoted father of two\, who drives an electric car and supports good causes. His next exhibition\, “The Square\,” is an installation that invites passersby to altruistic deeds\, reminding them of their role as responsible human beings. But sometimes it’s difficult to live up to your own ideas: When Christian’s phone is stolen\, his foolish response drags him into a shameful situation. And when the museum’s PR agency creates an unexpected campaign for “The Square\,” the overblown reaction from the public sends Christian\, as well as the museum\, into an existential crisis. \n\n\nThe Square was shortlisted for the 2017 Oscars as the Best Foreign Language Film nominee. It has received numerous distinctions since its premiere\, including six awards at the European Film Awards\, including Best European Film; and the Palme D’Or Winner at the Cannes Film Festival\, 2017. \n“Ruben Östlund’s sprawling and daringly surreal satire The Square turns a contemporary art museum into a city-state of bizarre\, dysfunctional and Ballardian strangeness… It sets out to make your jaw drop. And it succeeds.” —Peter Bradshaw\, The Guardian \n “[Östlund] creates suspense in a new-fangled way\, turning the space between people into an alarming existential battleground.” —Owen Gleiberman\, Variety \n\nPurchase tickets \nThis program has been supported by the Monika and Charles Heimbold Fund for Exhibitions and Programs. \n

SUMMARY:THE FIRST LADY NEXT DOOR WITH ELIZA REID
DESCRIPTION:On May 5\, join us for a talk on The First Lady Next Door with author and former First Lady of Iceland Eliza Reid in conversation with writer\, producer and journalist Janice Kaplan! \nIn early 2016\, Eliza Reid’s biggest daily goals were modest but meaningful: showering without one of her four kids bursting into the bathroom\, juggling clients without dropping a deadline\, and growing the writers’ retreat she was building from scratch. What wasn’t onher bingo card? That her husband—a bookish\, cardigan-wearing history professor—would run for president of Iceland… and\, seven weeks later\, actually win. \nSuddenly\, Canadian-born Eliza was catapulted into a new life as first lady of her adopted country with the eyes of a nation watching her every move—as someone’s wife. Absent an instruction manual (she googled how to curtsy before meeting the queen of Denmark)\, she decided to do what she’d always done: figure it out on her own terms. Part fish out of water story and part fairy tale\, The First Lady Next Door takes readers from rural Ontario to Timbuktu\, and from the White House to Buckingham Palace. Eliza shows how embracing authenticity in all its messiness can becomeyour greatest strength\, even when the world expects polished perfection. After all\, our everyday moments are what create the road map for making the unexpected count. \nRegister

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT — NORTHERN PATTERNS: LEARN TRADITIONAL ARCTIC BEADING DETAILS
DESCRIPTION:*Please note: this workshop is now sold out.* \nThis hands-on workshop draws inspiration from the work of master bone carver Inna Eilyuvna Iadne\, whose intricate sculptures and jewelry reflect the cultural depth and artistic traditions of the Indigenous peoples of Yamal. Participants will explore Northern ornamental traditions through beadweaving\, translating symbolic patterns and storytelling elements into contemporary wearable art. \nThrough guided practice\, attendees will learn 1 to 3 beadweaving techniques and create an original jewelry piece such as earrings\, a bracelet\, or a pendant. Along the way\, they will gain insight into the symbolism\, composition\, and cultural context that inform Northern decorative arts\, as seen in Iadne’s meticulous attention to detail and narrative craftsmanship. \nThe workshop aims to develop artistic taste\, strengthen compositional thinking\, and equip participants with the skills to independently design and create meaningful handmade pieces that connect traditional heritage with modern expression. \n\nPurchase tickets
