SUMMARY:LIVE A LITTLE | NEW NORDIC CINEMA
DESCRIPTION:On August 26\, see Swedish director Fanny Ovesen’s “vibrant” coming-of-age drama Live a Little! \nBest friends Laura and Alex set off on a summer Interrail adventure across Europe. After a night of partying in Warsaw\, Laura wakes up naked in a stranger’s bed—and with no memory of what happened. As the two young Swedes couchsurf their way across Prague\, Berlin\, and Paris\, fragments of that night return and Laura’s doubts mount\, pushing her to confront her own limits in a quest for truth and self-discovery. \nFanny Ovesen’s crackling coming-of-age debut relies on patient\, attentive observation by letting emotional truth surface in small gestures. At the center of Live a Little is an intimate portrayal of female friendship\, and Embla Ingelman-Sundberg’s breakout performance as Laura makes her a talent to watch. \nPhotos: Mattias Pollak \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:NORDIC TEXTILE TAKEOVER: THE COLD STITCH
DESCRIPTION:Scandinavia House\, in partnership with New York Textile Month\, is pleased to present the third iteration of NORDIC TEXTILE TAKEOVER\, an exhibition\, workshop series\, and symposium highlighting contemporary Nordic Textiles\, coinciding with NY Textile Month in New York City. Featuring an exhibition in the Scandinavia House gallery\, the program includes artist talks\, a reception\, and hands-on workshops. The exhibition opens on Friday\, September 4\, to Wednesday\, September 16\, 2026. More details will be announced shortly. \nTHE COLD STITCH is a Nordic textile collaboration project co-organized by Ragna Froda (ISL/US)\, Director of New York Textile Month\, and Emily Stoddart (CA)\, manager of exhibitions and community programs at Scandinavia House\, New York. The exhibition has been curated by Ragna Froda (ISL/US). \nABOUT THE COLD STITCH\nIn the Nordic countries\, stitching has long been more than decoration or domestic craft. It is a necessity\, a form of storytelling\, survival\, memory\, and care. In landscapes shaped by cold climates and long winters\, textiles have become vessels of warmth\, protection\, repair\, and continuity\, carrying traces of everyday life and cultural identity across generations. \nTHE COLD STITCH brings together artists from across Scandinavia whose practices engage with textiles as both material and language. Through quilting\, patchwork\, collage\, weaving\, hand embroidery\, sculptural textiles\, and visible and invisible stitching\, this exhibition explores how textile traditions have continued to evolve within contemporary art. The exhibition’s title refers both to the geography of the North\, the relationship with textiles and the act of stitching itself. \nA stitch repairs\, connects\, layers\, and transforms. It binds fragments together while allowing histories\, emotions\, reflections on the political climate\, and personal narratives to remain visible. Echoing this feature\, many of the works in the exhibition embrace reuse and transformation\, giving discarded fabrics\, garments\, yarns\, and textile remnants new meaning through the artistic process. \nTHE COLD STITCH celebrates textile art as a living and evolving practice deeply rooted in the cultures of the North\, where there is a strong tradition of working with textiles as an art form and where stitching continues to mend\, preserve\, and reimagine the world around us. \nBanner image credit: Ellen Dynebrink\, Kiyoshi Yamamoto\, Nora Strand\, Lee Jensen\, and Heidi Hankaniemi \nTEXTILE TAKEOVER is presented in partnership with New York Textile Month.

SUMMARY:THE HOME OF THE DROWNED | WITH ELIN ANNA LABBA
DESCRIPTION:Join us on September 15 for a discussion and presentation on The Home of the Drowned! Author Elin Anna Labba will be joined by a moderator to delve into her debut novel\, a haunting\, multigenerational saga of a family of Sámi women fighting the devastation of their way of life. \nNothing is true\, and everything is true; poetry will never hurt more than what has happened. Every summer\, Iŋgá\, her mother Rávdná\, and her Aunt Ánne travel west to their village on the lake. But the summer Iŋgá is thirteen\, they arrive to find their home and possessions have disappeared under water\, the land flooded by a dam built to supply hydropower to a society that has continually stolen from them. \nThe Home of the Drowned follows these women’s fortunes over forty years—from 1942 to 1982—as the water their people have lived near for centuries is transformed into a menacing force that threatens all they hold dear. Defying the authorities\, Rávdná decides to build a proper house on the lake to replace what was lost\, becoming an unlikely activist even as her actions isolate her family from the rest of the community. Meanwhile\, Ánne’s health is in decline\, and a concerned Iŋgá merely longs to live like everyone else—an impossible wish when the Swedish state is relentlessly drowning her world. \nOut now from University of Minnesota Press\, The Home of the Drowned “paints a stunning portrait of the tenacity of an Indigenous people jarred\, displaced\, and neglected by so-called progress” (Jon Hickey\, author of Big Chief). Drawing on her own family’s history of forced relocation and violent colonial dispossession\, Elin Anna Labba’s debut novel brings Sámi history to the fore through this intimate story. In poetic prose deftly translated by Elizabeth Clark Wessel\, she reveals connections between land\, water\, and people that hauntingly reverberate with the question: what is it that makes a home? \nRegister

SUMMARY:THE QUIET BEEKEEPER | NEW NORDIC CINEMA
DESCRIPTION:“A warmly melancholic\, affirmative slice of imperfect humanity”—On September 16\, see the poignant\, meditative family drama The Quiet Beekeeper! Winner of the Audience Award at the 2026 Göteborg Film Festival\, The Quiet Beekeeper is a quiet and deeply affecting drama inspired by real-life events exploring love\, nature\, and the cycles of life. \n\nSet in the small\, rustic town of Åmotfors in the Swedish region of Värmland\, close to the Norwegian border\, the film follows father Olof and daughter Lise who long for connection and carry shared grief in different ways. Like his forefathers\, beekeeper Olof (a stellar Adam Lundgren) keeps bees and drives a snowplough in wintertime to keep the bills paid for his family\, consisting of his mother\, sister and his prickly teenage daughter Lise. \nWith a delicate touch\, the film deftly captures life in the countryside\, portraying both the everyday and the existential\, from the humming of beehives to a relationship on the verge of collapse. Directed and co-written by Marcus Carlsson\, who co-wrote the script with star Adam Lundgren\, and featuring an atmospheric score by Janne Schaffer\, this is a sensitive story of loss\, silence\, longing for closeness\, hope and facing our fears. \n\nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:A LIGHT THAT NEVER GOES OUT | NEW NORDIC CINEMA
DESCRIPTION:“[One] of the most interesting films at Cannes… rooted in a place but allowed to grow outwards” (Philip Oltermann\, The Guardian) —On October 21\, see the charming comedy-drama A Light That Never Goes Out! Written and directed by Finnish screenwriter Lauri-Matti Parppei in his feature directorial debut\, and loaded with deadpan humor\, A Light That Never Goes Out is a charming and tender feel-good drama about the power of music and community. \nAfter a breakdown\, 29-year-old classical flute player Pauli returns from Helsinki to his small Finnish hometown to recuperate at his parents’ house. Unable to play his instrument\, he struggles with feelings of failure. Then Pauli runs into Iiris\, an old classmate who still lives in town and makes experimental music by herself. Iiris tries to persuade him that they should make music together\, as she is convinced that by joining forces\, they would be able to create something completely new and unique. Her chaotic energy fascinates Pauli\, who has been striving for perfection and avoided mistakes all his life. Soon\, little by little he starts finding new comfort and solace in their weird sonic experiments. But\, as old pressures resurface\, Pauli faces difficult choices about his future and the friendships that have given him new hope. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:SOLOMAMMA | NEW NORDIC CINEMA
DESCRIPTION:“A touching and incisive portrait” (Cineuropa) —On October 7\, see the tender comedy-drama Solomamma! In Janicke Askevold’s second feature\, a single mother gets tangled up in a web of lies while searching for the identity of her son’s sperm donor. \nWhen Edith suddenly finds herself single as she nears her 40th birthday\, she chooses to have a child with the help of a sperm donor. But the joy of being a single mother to Sigurd is challenged by a creeping uncertainty when her son begins to ask questions about his absent father. When she unexpectedly discovers the donor’s identity—a nearby successful game developer named Niels—curiosity leads her to meet him on the pretext of an interview. What begins as a calculated encounter gradually deepens into a genuine connection\, driving Edith to sink deeper into lies and endanger the fragile balance of the life she has built. \nSolomamma is a sensitive drama about identity and belonging\, providing a rich portrayal of how modern family ties extend beyond the purely biological. Director Janicke Askevold explores the ethical dilemmas surrounding anonymous sperm donation and modern motherhood. Lisa Loven Kongsli and Herbert Nordrum embody their roles perfectly\, bringing out the vibrant tension in their encounters. The film was the first Norwegian film since 1975 to be selected for the main competition at the prestigious Locarno Film Festival. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:RUBEN HØGH | CONCERT
DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 8 for an evening with Danish pianist and former ASF Fellow Ruben Høgh! With a strong focus on sonic experimentation and commitment to artistic innovation\, Høgh moves freely between European classical traditions and the raw energy of New York’s Downtown scene. \n\n\nParticularly drawn to the resonating textures and sonic landscapes of post-rock and inspired by composers like Julia Wolfe\, John Adams\, Steve Reich\, Olivier Messiaen and Dmitri Shostakovich\, he explores new forms of pianism that both challenge and build on conventions and create immersive concert experiences where the distance between stage and audience dissolves. This includes the use of extended techniques\, prepared piano\, as well as electronic textures and software. \n\n\n\n\nPurchase tickets

SUMMARY:HOME SWEET HOME | NEW NORDIC CINEMA
DESCRIPTION:On October 14\, see the warmly rendered drama Home Sweet Home! Single mother Sofie starts a new career as a caretaker for the elderly\, only to be humbled by the toll it takes on her physical and mental state\, in this authentic and rewarding glimpse at the uncelebrated world of healthcare workers from director Frelle Petersen. \nWe meet Sofie (Jette Søndergaard) as she begins her new elder-care job in a small Danish city. Each day\, she travels from flat to flat\, helping with bathing\, cooking\, cleaning bed sores\, changing linens\, and—most importantly—just chatting with lonely patients who feel abandoned. The recently divorced Sofie also struggles to raise her taciturn young daughter\, Clara. Sofie’s even temperament is well-suited for her demanding tasks\, but she is also subject to intense pressures of staff shortages and rudeness. When one of her client’s relatives lambastes her for alleged ineptitude\, Sofie begins questioning her ability to maintain intimate connections with patients\, co-workers\, and even her own family. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:HAMPUS ÖHMAN-FRÖLUND: MOTVALSEN
DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 15 for an unforgettable evening with Hampus Öhman-Frölund as he plays selections from his new solo record\, “Motvalsen”! \n“Motvalsen” (2026) is the first drums / percussion solo record from NYC-based Swedish drummer Hampus Öhman-Frölund. Blending acoustic percussion with electronics\, samples\, and instruments from Sweden\, the album explores his experience of leaving home\, building a life in New York in his mid-twenties\, and finding new ways to engage with his cultural roots in the diaspora. Inspired by the textures and spirit of Scandinavian folk music—without claiming a place within that tradition—Motvalsen presents a deeply personal electro-acoustic meditation on memory\, distance\, and transnational belonging.\n\nPurchase tickets

SUMMARY:TELL EVERYONE | NEW NORDIC CINEMA
DESCRIPTION:“A compelling and ultimately compassionate story”—On October 21\, see the striking period drama Tell Everyone! Director Alli Haapasalo and lead actress Marketta Tikkanen will be present for a Q&A following the screening. \nOn a remote island where troublesome women are sent to be forgotten\, an emotionally charged struggle for liberation unfolds in a dazzlingly beautiful and deeply moving historical drama. \n\nFollowing her acclaimed Girl Picture (2022)\, director Alli Haapasalo takes the female body’s built-in violence and imbues that bottled up fury into 19th-century Finland on a little island called Seili. The year is 1898\, and Amanda (Marketta Tikkanen) arrives at the institution on the island of Seili in the Finnish archipelago. She has been committed after living a wandering\, decadent life\, marked by episodes of “madness” once a month caused by severe menstrual pain. Amanda considers her stay on the island strictly temporary\, but as she begins to form bonds with the other women\, doubt takes root. Marketta Tikkanen shines in the lead role\, supported by Alma Pöysti\, Krista Kosonen and Aamu Milonoff\, who together create a richly layered gallery of female fates in a genuinely affecting drama. \n\nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:NO COMMENT | NEW NORDIC CINEMA
DESCRIPTION:“A sharp and entertaining satire with a biting edge” —On October 28\, see the political satire No Comment! In his newest film\, Norwegian director Petter Næss (Elling) takes aim at a political establishment willing to sacrifice both morality and truth to save its own skin and hold on to power. \nAs the election approaches\, sitting Prime Minister Alma Solvik (Laila Goody) hopes for renewed trust from voters when it is revealed that her husband Sondre (Anders Baasmo) has made a series of lucrative stock deals during her time in office. With accusations of insider trading and conflicts of interest\, Sondre becomes the perfect scapegoat in a high-stakes political circus. To contain the brewing media storm\, Alma and her embattled spin doctor Karianne Moen (Pia Tjelta) orchestrate a bold strategy to protect her and her party’s reputation — whatever it takes. \nDirector Petter Næss and screenwriter Ståle Stein Berg draw inspiration from real-life political scandals — not least the stock trading scandal involving Norway’s former Prime Minister Erna Solberg and her husband\, Sindre Finnes. \nPurchase Tickets
