SUMMARY:SAUNA LOST IN TRANSLATION: RESTORING FINNISHNESS TO A GLOBAL TRADITION
DESCRIPTION:Join us on January 20 for a talk with Finlandia Foundation’s Lecturer of the Year Eero Kilpi on advancing sauna culture and Finnish tradition in North America and beyond! \nKilpi’s lecture\, “Sauna Lost in Translation: Restoring Finnishness to a Global Tradition\,” traces the evolution of global sweat bathing cultures—from Lakota sweat lodges to early Nordic sauna—and examines how Finnish traditions can reclaim their central role in today’s rapidly expanding sauna movement. \nDrawing on two decades of work with the North American Sauna Society\, Eero unpacks what happened when the ancient Finnish practice arrived in North America and morphed into what he calls the “hotbox phenomenon.” He explains how a wellness trend focused on heat\, hardware\, and health fads often stripped sauna of its spirit\, ritual\, and deeper mental-emotional benefits. \nWith humor\, clarity\, and lived experience as a Finn who has spent more than half his life in North America\, Eero offers “hot takes” on where sauna culture went astray—and how returning to traditional principles can restore its meaning. He argues that when we root the practice in its cultural and spiritual foundations\, everyone can experience the most authentic and profoundly restorative sauna possible. \nRegister

SUMMARY:WATER-BASED PAINTING
DESCRIPTION:This series offers a gentle introduction to the tactile qualities of materials such as paper\, pastel\, paint\, graphite pencil\, and ink. Participants will explore the unique characteristics of various tools and surfaces\, learning simple techniques to get started and discover inspiration—whether drawn from the inner world or the world around us. The focus is on the process of making: approaching art as a meditative\, exploratory practice. Together\, we’ll experiment\, play\, and pay close attention to what unfolds on the page\, moment by moment. There are no expectations for finished pieces or specific outcomes —the class itself is the experience and the goal. Each session will close with a supportive group reflection\, where we’ll share and appreciate each other’s progress\, process\, and discoveries. \nIn this course\, students will explore and experiment with water-based colored paint and water using brushes on paper. \nThe series can be experienced as a complete progression or as individual\, standalone classes. Participation is limited to 12 students. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT — SENTIMENTAL VALUE | NORDIC & BALTIC OSCAR CONTENDERS
DESCRIPTION:*This event is now sold out.* \nOn January 14\, Scandinavia House presents a special screening featuring Norway’s official entry for Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards: the poignant drama Sentimental Value\, followed by a filmmaker panel featuring director Joachim Trier! \nSentimental Value\nDir. Joachim Trier | Norway\, 2025 | 134 min\nIn Norwegian with English subtitles \n“The best film of the year” (Vogue) —Sisters Nora (Renate Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) reunite with their estranged father\, the charismatic Gustav (Stellan Skarsgård\, in a remarkable performance)\, a once-renowned director who offers stage actress Nora a role in what he hopes will be his comeback film. When she declines\, Gustav casts an up-and-coming young Hollywood star (Elle Fanning) instead\, forcing the family to confront long-buried tensions as the striving outsider becomes entangled in their fraught dynamic. \nWith Sentimental Value\, Danish-Norwegian auteur Joachim Trier follows his critically acclaimed The Worst Person in the World (2021) with a magnetic comedy-drama about legacy\, art\, and the performances that bind—and divide—families. Trier’s insightful and captivating adult drama\, which won the Grand Prix at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival\, furthers the writer-director’s piercing exploration of the frayed ties that bind us to one another and to our creative selves. \n“A transcendent\, moving masterpiece” (IndieWire) \nRegister \n

SUMMARY:FOLKTALES | NORDIC & BALTIC OSCAR CONTENDERS
DESCRIPTION:On January 10\, Scandinavia House presents a special screening and film talk of a Norwegian qualifier for Best Documentary Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards: the tender\, deeply affecting documentary Folktales\, followed by a film talk by Oscar®-nominated filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady! In this life-affirming masterpiece\, teenagers converge at a traditional folk high school in Arctic Norway where they must rely on only themselves\, one another\, and a loyal pack of sled dogs as they all grow in unexpected directions. \nIn Norse mythology\, the three “Norns” are powerful deities who weave the threads of fate and shape humans’ futures. Today\, Pasvik Folk High School in northern Norway aims to produce a similar life-changing effect on its students. Folktales tells the timely and heartwarming story of teenagers who choose to spend an unconventional “gap year” learning to dog sled and survive the Arctic wilderness\, in hopes of finding connection and meaning in the modern world. Guided by patient teachers and a yard full of heroic Alaskan huskies\, they discover their own potential and develop deep relationships with the land\, animals and humans around them. Through intimate verité storytelling and exhilarating cinematography\, Ewing and Grady examine humans on the cusp of adulthood\, finding themselves at the edge of the world. \nRegister \n

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT — MR. NOBODY AGAINST PUTIN + EXTREMIST | NORDIC & BALTIC OSCAR CONTENDERS
DESCRIPTION:*This event is now sold out.* \nOn January 9\, Scandinavia House presents a special double screening featuring two eligible films for the 98th Academy Awards: the poignant first-hand documentary Mr. Nobody Against Putin\, Denmark’s official entry for Best International Feature Film\, and the Oscar-eligible animated short Extremist (Latvia)\, followed by director talks by Pasha Talankin and David Borenstein. \nMr. Nobody Against Putin\nDir. Pavel Talankin & David Borenstein | Denmark & Czech Republic\, 2025 | 90 min\nIn Russian with English subtitles \n“A must-watch\, indelible document of ideological warfare”—Pasha Talankin is an unlikely hero: a beloved Russian primary school teacher\, known as a mentor and prankster who offers students a safe haven in his office. After Russia invades Ukraine\, Pasha’s role in the school changes dramatically as he is reluctantly drawn into Putin’s propaganda machine. Forced to promote state-sanctioned messages and horrified by the militarization of his school and community\, he wrestles with guilt and a sense of powerlessness\, leading him to become an international whistleblower. \nAs the school’s videographer\, Pasha documents intimate and revealing footage of Putin’s regime\, capturing the rise of militarized children’s groups\, repressive laws\, fervent nationalism\, and the recruitment of graduating students to fight in the war. When he learns his own life may be at risk\, Pasha is forced to plan a dangerous escape from Russia. \nThe winner of the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award at Sundance\, this uniquely collaborative film is as captivating and joyful as it is eye-opening and sobering. Mr. Nobody Against Putin showcases rare footage that reveals the profound impact of Putin’s regime on the lives of everyday Russians\, particularly its children. \nЭкстремистка / Extremist\nDir. Aleksandr Molochnikov | Latvia\, 2025 | 17 min\nIn Estonian with English subtitles \nInspired by the real-life case of Aleksandra Skochilenko\, Extremist follows a young Russian artist who makes an anti-war statement by swapping food labels with pacifist messages in a Moscow supermarket\, leading to her arrest and the threat of a 10-year prison sentence. The film reimagines the so-called crime that made Skochilenko famous\, an avatar for both the cruelty of Putin’s system\, and the bravery of the few who would risk their fates and freedom to oppose it. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:KON TIKI
DESCRIPTION:“Seaworthy\, and then some” —on January 7\, see Kon Tiki and help bring our Silver Anniversary Rescreens into 2026! Directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg\, this epic adventure film dramatizes Norwegian anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl’s real-life 1947 expedition across the Pacific on a balsawood raft. \nNorway’s most expensive production to date\, Kon Tiki (Norway\, 2013) was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 85th Academy Awards\, and was screened here at Scandinavia House as a part of our Nordic Oscar Contenders in 2013. Now\, for our 25th anniversary\, we return to Heyerdahl’s (Pål Sverre Hagen) epic gambit to prove that South Americans had settled in the Polynesian islands\, a theory that remains a matter of debate\, and to retrace their steps using only the resources available to potential pre-Columbian settlers. \nThough he himself cannot swim or sail\, he sets out on the treacherous 4\,300-nautical-mile journey across the Pacific from Peru to Polynesia aboard the small raft– the Kon Tiki\, named after the Inca sun god –along with his crew of five men (and a macaw named Lorita). Kon Tiki takes us through the exploits of Heyerdahl and the embattled crew as they embark on their three-month sail equipped with only a radio– facing down tidal waves\, sharks\, and demons of the deep. \n“A ravishingly photographed\, old-fashioned man-against-the-elements epic propelled by human-scaled heroics.” (RogerEbert.com) \n“A rousing and thoroughly enjoyable Old Hollywood-style adventure…” (NPR) \nPurchase tickets \nThis program has been supported by the Monika and Charles Heimbold Fund for Exhibitions and Programs. \n

SUMMARY:VIKTOR | NORDIC & BALTIC OSCAR CONTENDERS
DESCRIPTION:On December 10\, Scandinavia House presents a special screening and film talk of Denmark’s official entry for Best Documentary Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards: the bold war documentary Viktor\, followed by a Q&A with director Olivier Sarbil. \nViktor\nDir. Olivier Sarbil | Denmark/Ukraine/France/United States of America\, 2024 \nFusing rigorous reportage with innovative cinematic subjectivity\, this bold documentary from veteran war photographer Olivier Sarbil is a uniquely intimate portrait of a Deaf person’s experience of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. \nPhotographer and samurai aficionado Viktor lives with his mother in Kharkiv\, Ukraine\, just 20 miles from the Russian border\, when the invasion begins. As a Deaf man denied the opportunity to fight\, his military ambitions shift from combat to documenting the war. With striking black-and-white cinematography and distinctive sound design\, the film immerses the viewer in Viktor’s powerful journey through air raids\, evacuations\, and the eerie silences in between. \nOne of the rare documentaries to premiere in the prestigious Platform programme at TIFF\, Viktor beautifully weaves black and white imagery with sound design that reflects Viktor’s own experience of the world. Acclaimed filmmaker and veteran war cinematographer Olivier Sarbil (Mosul\, On The President’s Orders) brought his unique experience with conflict and single-sided deafness to his relationship with Viktor\, creating a close collaboration that is\nreflected in the personal\, intimate story that unfolds on screen. Through his lens\, the audience witnesses a raw and intimate engagement with a war-torn world\, amplifying both the personal and universal impact of conflict. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:MR. NOBODY AGAINST PUTIN + WINTER IN MARCH | NORDIC & BALTIC OSCAR CONTENDERS
DESCRIPTION:On December 4th\, Scandinavia House presents a special double screening featuring two eligible films for the 98th Academy Awards: the poignant first-hand documentary Mr. Nobody Against Putin\, Denmark’s official entry for Best International Feature Film\, and the Oscar-eligible animated short Winter in March (Estonia). \nAs the school’s videographer\, Pasha documents intimate and revealing footage of Putin’s\nregime\, capturing the rise of militarized children’s groups\, repressive laws\, fervent\nnationalism\, and the recruitment of graduating students to fight in the war. When he learns\nhis own life may be at risk\, Pasha is forced to plan a dangerous escape from Russia. \nLumi saadab meid / Winter in March\nDir. Natalia Mirzoyan | Estonia/Armenia/France\, 2024 | 16 min\nIn Estonian with English subtitles \n\nHelpless in the face of a repressive state\, a young couple leaves their home – an escape that turns into a surreal nightmare. Praised as “an authentic story of inner conflict that comes from facing your country falling into the moral abyss\,” this tenderly animated production premiered at Cannes. Winter in March has since received critical acclaim\, winning the Heart of Sarajevo for Best Short Film at the Sarajevo Film Festival. \n\nSnipped\nDir. Alexander Saul | Denmark\, 2025 | 16 min\nIn Danish with English subtitles \nA Jewish convert. A Muslim doctor. One holy snip and a whole lot of tension. Snipped explores the universal experience of coexistence through humor and shared rituals\, with director Alexander Saul’s personal story and a unifying Muslim-Jewish score softening heavy themes into moments of laughter and trust. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:SNIPPED | NORDIC & BALTIC OSCAR CONTENDERS
DESCRIPTION:On December 4\, Scandinavia House presents a special screening and film talk of a Danish qualifier for Best Live-Action Short Film at the 98th Academy Awards: the sharp comedy Snipped\, followed by a Q&A with director Alexander Saul and producer Rebecca Pruzan. \nSnipped\nDir. Alexander Saul | Denmark\, 2025 | 16 min\nIn Danish with English subtitles \n“A darkly hilarious masterstroke with Oscar-Worthy comic timing”– A Jewish convert. A Muslim doctor. One holy snip and a whole lot of tension. \nHailed as “an absurdly poignant contender in the Oscar short film race\,” the short follows Adam (Louis Bodnia Andersen)’s experience as a Jewish convert undergoing a ritual circumcision at a Muslim clinic in Copenhagen. Snipped explores the universal experience of coexistence through humor and shared rituals\, with director Alexander Saul’s personal story and a unifying Muslim-Jewish score softening heavy themes into moments of laughter and trust. \nSnipped‘s narrative unfolds in a cramped Danish clinic where a simple religious ceremony turns into an existential standoff. What begins as a sacred rite of passage quickly unravels into a study in discomfort\, not just physical\, but cultural\, spiritual\, and profoundly human.  With a talented team including Oscar-nominated producer Rebecca Pruzan and Oscar-winning producer Kim Magnusson\, the film already made a splash at this year’s HollyShorts Film Festival. Based on Saul’s own experience as a Jewish convert undergoing a ritual circumcision at a Muslim clinic\, the film deftly navigates a minefield of cultural tension and bodily vulnerability\, without ever losing its sense of humor. \nPurchase Tickets \n

SUMMARY:SEEING SILENCE: HELENE SCHJERFBECK
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with Dr. Anna Maria von Bonsdorff (Museum Director at the Ateneum Art Museum\, Finnish National Gallery)\, Dita Amory (Curator in Charge\, Robert Lehman Collection\, Metropolitan Museum of Art)\, and Patricia Berman (Feldberg Professor of Art\, Wellesley College)\, as they discuss the work and life of Finnish painter Helene Schjerfbeck. \nBeloved in Nordic countries for her highly original style\, Helene Schjerfbeck (1862–1946) is relatively unknown to the rest of the world. Overcoming immense personal struggles and working in a remote location for decades\, she produced a powerful body of work through sheer force of will. \nSeeing Silence: The Paintings of Helene Schjerfbeck\, opening at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on December 5th\, is the first exhibition to showcase the work of the artist in a major United States museum. Featuring nearly 60 works—including generous loans from the Finnish National Gallery / Ateneum Art Museum\, other Finnish museums\, and private collections in Finland and Sweden—Seeing Silence illuminates Schjerfbeck as a valuable voice of modernism. In this lecture and discussion\, speakers will reflect on Schjerfbeck’s oeuvre\, life\, and social context\, offering perspectives on this important artist. \nHeader Photo: Helene Schjerfbeck\, Self-Portrait\, 1912\, oil on canvas\, 43\,5 × 42 cm. SUMMARY:THE LOVE THAT REMAINS + O + ON WEARY WINGS GO BY | NORDIC & BALTIC OSCAR CONTENDERS
DESCRIPTION:On December 2\, Scandinavia House presents a special screening featuring three eligible films for the 98th Academy Awards: the tender relationship drama The Love That Remains\, Iceland’s official entry for Best International Feature Film\, and the Oscar-eligible shorts O (Iceland) and On Weary Wings Go By (Estonia). \nThe Love That Remains\nDir. Hlynur Pálmason | Iceland/Denmark/Sweden/France\, 2025 | 109 min\nIn Icelandic with English subtitles \nCharting the gradual evolution of a family in the midst of an irreparable fracture\, The Love That Remains is a poignant\, crisply pointillistic domestic drama that observes life’s changes with humor and whimsy\, set against the majestic\, ever-shifting Icelandic landscape. Visual artist Anna (Saga Garðarsdóttir) and fisherman Magnús (Sverrir Guðnason) were teenage sweethearts but have recently grown apart\, and Magnús has moved out of the house. As long as the newly estranged parents put on a good face\, the children—and their adorable sheepdog Panda (who won the prestigious Palme Dog award at Cannes)—seem to take the split in stride. Yet as Magnús becomes increasingly alienated from his domestic life\, harsh reality can’t help but bubble to the surface. \nHlynur Pálmason’s follow-up to his austere 19th-century drama Godland is a “constantly surprising” film with an immaculate sense of framing and pacing—and an evocative\, dulcet piano score by Harry Hunt—dotted with idiosyncratic flights of fancy that never detract from the central emotional authenticity. \nO\nDir. Rúnar Rúnarsson | Iceland/Sweden\, 2024 | 19 min\nIn Icelandic with English subtitles \n\nA fragile soul’s inner turmoil unfolds as he grapples with personal demons while pursuing a seemingly mundane goal\, unveiling the profound human struggle within life’s simplicity. Praised as “a deep\, uncompromising leap into the abyss of humanity’s self-destructive nature\,” O celebrates the battles we fight in the mundanity of everyday life. \n\nOn Weary Wings Go By (Linnud läinud)\nDir. Anu-Laura Tuttelberg\, Estonia & Lithuania\, 2024 | 11 min. |  No dialogue \nIn this animated wintery poem of Nordic nature\, the sun moves low\, and days shorten. Birds fly south\, and porcelain animals and insects hide from the freezing wind and snow. Only a small porcelain girl wanders the abandoned landscape\, with no way to get out. \nPurchase Tickets
