SUMMARY:NORDIC BOOK CLUB ONLINE | OUT OF THE BLUE: NEW SHORT FICTION FROM ICELAND
DESCRIPTION:Read and discuss literature with our Nordic Book Club Online! Nordic Book Club meets monthly via Zoom to discuss contemporary literature in translation. On April 7\, 2026\, in coordination with our upcoming West Nordic art exhibition Inside Voices\, Outside Light\, we’ll be discussing Out of the Blue: New Short Fiction from Iceland\, edited by Helen Mitsios. \nThis extraordinary collection\, the first anthology of Icelandic short fiction published in English translation\, features work by twenty of Iceland’s most popular and celebrated living authors—including Andri Snær Magnason\, Jón Kalman Stefánsson\, Kristín Ómarsdóttir\, and Auður Jónsdóttir—granddaughter of Halldór Laxness\, who won the 1955 Nobel Prize in Literature. \nCelebrated in Europe and Scandinavia but less known in the English-speaking world\, these writers traverse realms of darkness and light that will be familiar to readers who have fallen under the spell of Scandinavian fiction. While uniquely Icelandic in topography and tenor\, with a touch of the island’s supernatural charm\, the stories traffic in the enduring and universal complexities of human nature. Here is a fictional universe where the ghosts of Vikings and spirits tread\, volcanoes grumble underfoot\, and writers trip the Northern Lights fantastic across the landscape of the Icelandic imagination. \n\nOut of the Blue is available in paperback and e-book from University of Minnesota Press and from Barnes and Noble and other retailers. \n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:LONG GOOD THURSDAY
DESCRIPTION:“Heartwarming… a great accomplishment”—On April 8\, see Long Good Thursday\, Finnish director Mika Kaurismaki‘s fourth installment of the rollicking Grump film series! \nSet in the lush days of a Finnish summer\, Long Good Thursday is a gentle comedy of growing older and of accepting the never-ending possibility of finding joy. Finnish comedy star Heikki Kinnunen plays an aging\, stubborn farmer intent on finishing his life in the home he shared with his late wife. Much to his surprise\, he finds himself smitten with a free-spirited artist\, called Saimi\, who is intent on using him as a model for her photography. \nHis sons are skeptical– even jealous –of their father\, and don’t trust Saimi’s intentions. Who knows\, maybe she’s after his inheritance? Family meetings\, misunderstandings\, swimming in the moonlight\, and sleepless nights show that the power of love can pierce through even the oldest of flannel shirts. \nPurchase Tickets \n

SUMMARY:RACHMANINOFF’S PIANO CONCERTO WITH PER TENGSTRAND
DESCRIPTION:Join us on April 9 for our final installment of a special concert series celebrating 25 years of Music on Park Avenue\, the acclaimed performance series curated by Swedish pianist Per Tengstrand that has been with Scandinavia House since its inauguration in 2000. In honor of Scandinavia House’s silver anniversary year\, Tengstrand has presented a program of chamber music performances featuring distinguished guest musicians. \nThe most popular piano concerto ever written\, played in a way you never heard before! For the final performance of the series\, Per Tengstrand will be joined by students from Princeton University for a version of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s iconic Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor arranged for piano and string quartet. We will also hear all of the string players in solo pieces by J.S. Bach\, César Franck and York Bowen.  \nThanks to a generous loan by Victor Borge’s grandson Finn\, concerts will be performed on Victor Borge’s personal Steinway piano.

SUMMARY:THE GLOBAL IMPACT OF SEA LEVEL CHANGE
DESCRIPTION:The Columbia Climate School and Scandinavia House invite you to a reception and conversation on sea level change. \n\n\n\n\nChanges to the world’s ice sheets and sea levels are reshaping the places we call home. From flooding and intensifying storm surge risks in New York City to dramatic shifts along the coasts of Greenland and the Nordic region\, rising and falling seas deeply affect our infrastructure and cherished landscapes. \nLamont-Doherty Earth Observatory\, the Columbia Climate School’s powerhouse research hub\, is at the forefront of tracking sea level change. Its scientists study the past to understand long-term climate patterns and make accurate projections for the future\, providing essential insights for coastal planning\, policy\, risk assessment\, and community preparedness. \nIn this special Earth Month program\, Scandinavia House is proud to partner with the Columbia Climate School to bring this research directly to you. We invite you to join us\, bring your questions\, and engage with leading earth and climate experts\, Lamont Professor Jacky Austermann and Columbia Climate School Dean Alexis Abramson. \n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:SUDDEN OUTBURSTS OF EMOTIONS
DESCRIPTION:“An insightful\, compassionate\, and witty debut”—On April 8\, see Sudden Outbursts of Emotions\, a tender dramedy about the complexities of modern love and mid-life crises! \nTravel agent Jane (Iina Kuustonen) lives a comfortable\, stable yuppie existence in Helsinki with Mikki (Riku Nieminen)\, her theatre-actor boyfriend of 10 years. While their sex life appears active and content on the surface\, Jane is thrown for a loop when Mikki suggests trying an “open relationship” to spice things up. Jane is initially resistant but eventually agrees to attend an exclusive sex-positive weekend retreat\, where the 40-ish couple can explore other romantic pursuits. While Mikki wanders off\, Jane bumps into Valma (Laura Malmivaara)\, a free-spirited woman and veteran of the polyamorous lifestyle\, who encourages Jane to explore hidden facets of her love language. As their bond deepens\, Jane finds herself navigating unfamiliar territory—desire\, jealousy\, and self-discovery—while her once-stable life begins to unravel. What began as an experiment in freedom becomes a profound turning point that challenges everything Jane thought she knew about relationships. \nThis debut feature from Finnish TV writer/director Paula Korva\, could be called a “rom-dramedy” for its skillful depiction of the awkwardness\, excitement\, and befuddlement felt by newbies to the 3D chess game of polyamory. Korva treats her characters with grace and humor\, allowing them room to evolve gradually in this modern spin on the joys and absurdities of gender-fluid dating. \nPurchase Tickets \n

SUMMARY:NORTHERN PATTERNS: LEARN TRADITIONAL ARCTIC BEADING DETAILS
DESCRIPTION:This hands-on workshop draws inspiration from the work of master bone carver Inna Eilyuvna Iadne\, whose intricate sculptures and jewelry reflect the cultural depth and artistic traditions of the Indigenous peoples of Yamal. Participants will explore Northern ornamental traditions through beadweaving\, translating symbolic patterns and storytelling elements into contemporary wearable art. \nThrough guided practice\, attendees will learn 1 to 3 beadweaving techniques and create an original jewelry piece such as earrings\, a bracelet\, or a pendant. Along the way\, they will gain insight into the symbolism\, composition\, and cultural context that inform Northern decorative arts\, as seen in Iadne’s meticulous attention to detail and narrative craftsmanship. \nThe workshop aims to develop artistic taste\, strengthen compositional thinking\, and equip participants with the skills to independently design and create meaningful handmade pieces that connect traditional heritage with modern expression. \n\nPurchase tickets

SUMMARY:DREAMS
DESCRIPTION:“An intensely compelling story about first love”—On April 29th\, see DREAMS\, Norwegian director Dag Johan Haugerud’s third installment of the widely acclaimed Oslo Trilogy and winner of the Golden Bear at the 2025 Berlin International Film Festival! \n17-year-old Johanne drifts and daydreams like any teenager\, until one day her restlessness morphs into all-consuming passion for her charismatic French teacher\, Johanna. From her vulnerable yet never maudlin inner monologue\, to her frank confessions to her poet grandmother and over-curious mother\, to nuanced scenes of intimacy with Johanna\, Haugerud paints a complex\, endearing\, and intoxicating portrait of youthful infatuation and self-discovery\, laced with the lightest touch of moral inquiry. \n“It sweeps you up\, assuredly and indeed dreamily… The film’s precise juxtapositions of sight and sound produce brilliant flashes of insight…and a cumulatively seductive\, almost musical flow.”  (Justin Chang\, The New Yorker) \nPurchase Tickets \n

SUMMARY:THE SQUARE | SILVER ANNIVERSARY RESCREENS
DESCRIPTION:On May 6\, see The Square to wrap up our series of Silver Anniversary Rescreens! First screened at Scandinavia House in 2018\, this gripping sociological suspense story by director Ruben Östlund dives into the ethics of moral responsibility\, privilege\, and media sensationalism. \n\nChristian is the respected curator of a contemporary art museum\, a divorced but devoted father of two\, who drives an electric car and supports good causes. His next exhibition\, “The Square\,” is an installation that invites passersby to altruistic deeds\, reminding them of their role as responsible human beings. But sometimes it’s difficult to live up to your own ideas: When Christian’s phone is stolen\, his foolish response drags him into a shameful situation. And when the museum’s PR agency creates an unexpected campaign for “The Square\,” the overblown reaction from the public sends Christian\, as well as the museum\, into an existential crisis. \n\n\nThe Square was shortlisted for the 2017 Oscars as the Best Foreign Language Film nominee. It has received numerous distinctions since its premiere\, including six awards at the European Film Awards\, including Best European Film; and the Palme D’Or Winner at the Cannes Film Festival\, 2017. \n“Ruben Östlund’s sprawling and daringly surreal satire The Square turns a contemporary art museum into a city-state of bizarre\, dysfunctional and Ballardian strangeness… It sets out to make your jaw drop. And it succeeds.” —Peter Bradshaw\, The Guardian \n “[Östlund] creates suspense in a new-fangled way\, turning the space between people into an alarming existential battleground.” —Owen Gleiberman\, Variety \n\nPurchase tickets \nThis program has been supported by the Monika and Charles Heimbold Fund for Exhibitions and Programs. \n

SUMMARY:NORDIC BOOK CLUB ONLINE | THE SCHOOL OF NIGHT
DESCRIPTION:Read and discuss literature with our Nordic Book Club Online! Nordic Book Club meets monthly via Zoom to discuss contemporary literature in translation. On May 12\, 2026\, in coordination with our West Nordic art exhibition Inside Voices\, Outside Light\, we’ll be discussing The School of Night by Karl Ove Knausgård. \nKristian Hadeland\, young and ambitious\, has moved to London to study photography; he knows that he and his art are destined for more. His family never understood him\, and his fellow photography students bore him. But when he meets Hans\, an eccentric Dutch artist\, the future he yearns for becomes possible—as long as he is willing to sacrifice everything and stop at nothing. Twenty-four years later\, Kristian sees his dreams come to fruition when a major retrospective of his work is held in New York City. As his past catches up to him\, Kristian’s world begins to crumble. Success comes at a price\, but is he prepared to pay it? \nIn a thrilling twist on Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus\, Karl Ove Knausgaard masterfully spins a cautionary tale about the lengths that we will go to achieve success—and how far we are willing to fall. His most daring and macabre novel yet\, The School of Night is an indelible tale about dark temptations and moral depravity\, and what we forget when we bargain with the devil. \nThe School of Night is available in paperback and e-book from Penguin Random House and from Bookshop.org and other retailers. \n\nRegister

SUMMARY:LOVE
DESCRIPTION:“Utterly enrapturing”—On April 29th\, see LOVE\, Norwegian director Dag Johan Haugerud’s first installment of the widely acclaimed Oslo Trilogy! \nAn ambitious trilogy from Norwegian novelist/filmmaker Dag Johan Haugerud\, LOVE–SEX–DREAMS are three distinct feature films linked by their themes of nontraditional intimacy\, but need not be seen in any particular order. LOVE focuses on two colleagues at an Oslo hospital — Marianne\, a straight (and straitlaced) doctor\, and Tor\, a gay male nurse. Both single\, they cross paths by chance after hours and confide in each other: Marianne confesses her desire to be more adventurous and open in her encounters with men; Tor shares his fatigue with Grindr hook-ups. Their conversations form the heart of exploration of desire and emotional fulfillment. \n“Dag Johan Haugerud’s gently humanistic drama is one of those films that feels akin to a prism\, refracting its theme into the array of colors it contains…it’s so beautiful that you want to just keep dwelling in its world.” (Alissa Wilkinson\, The New York Times) \nPurchase Tickets \n

SUMMARY:NEXT IN NORDIC AMERICAN ARCHITECTURE: RESILIENCE MEETS WELLBEING
DESCRIPTION:Reflecting on Nordic design’s pivotal role in Modernism in America during the 20th century\, we turn again to the Nordic tradition for its resilient building strategies for climate action and wellbeing that offer tools for today and into the future. The four-part architecture series Nordic American Connections: Conversations on Architecture and Design engages contemporary Nordic and American architects and designers\, highlighting their sustainable design approaches with an emphasis on award-winning projects that shape the American landscape. \nThe fourth panel of the series\, marking Scandinavia House’s 25th Anniversary\, will close the series with contemporary Nordic American architects focusing on the challenges they face as designers in a rapidly changing environment—AI and technology\, economic volatility\, climate vulnerability—and what’s next for future practice. \nThese design leaders will highlight their firms’ approaches to innovation\, research and collaboration\, and cross-cultural influences used in their work. They will share strategies embodied in Nordic design for resilience and wellbeing: use of mass timber and natural materials\, alternative methods of construction\, community building and ‘complete design’. \nParticipants include Daniel Baumann\, Principal and Design Director at Henning Larsen; Bjarke Ingels\, founder of BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group; and Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter\, Director of Architecture for Communities Los Angeles (ACLA). SUMMARY:SEX
DESCRIPTION:“A playful\, insightful character study”—On May 20th\, see SEX\, Norwegian director Dag Johan Haugerud’s second installment of the widely acclaimed Oslo Trilogy! \nAn ambitious trilogy from Norwegian novelist/filmmaker Dag Johan Haugerud\, LOVE–SEX–DREAMS are three distinct feature films linked by their themes of nontraditional intimacy\, but need not be seen in any particular order. In SEX\, two male-identified colleagues who are happily married to women share candidly their secrets: one reveals his unprecedented recent sexual encounter with another man; the other is haunted by a recurring dream featuring David Bowie and his own gender fluidity. Both men — shockingly yet with great sensitivity — seek transparency and understanding with their wives. SEX thus envisions honest\, warm-hearted possibilities for gender expansiveness within heterosexual monogamy\, while also enacting the intricacy of an authentic and generous love. \n“Superbly acted. The film is laced with dry humor but also poignancy and notes of melancholy. [Turns] the male character study on its head with a gentle subversiveness.” (David Rooney\, The Hollywood Reporter) \nPurchase Tickets \n

SUMMARY:NORDIC BOOK CLUB ONLINE | BEASTS OF THE SEA
DESCRIPTION:Read and discuss literature with our Nordic Book Club Online! Nordic Book Club meets monthly via Zoom to discuss contemporary literature in translation. On June 9\, 2026\, we’ll be discussing Beasts of the Sea by Iida Turpeinen. \n“Turpeinen matches the heights of Andrea Barrett” in this sweeping and intimate tale about a fateful encounter between man and nature spanning three centuries and linked by a long-extinct denizen of the northern oceans (Publishers Weekly starred review). \nIn 1741\, thirty-two-year-old naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller joins Captain Bering’s Great Northern Expedition to scout out a sea route from Asia to America. Plagued with hardships\, captain and crew never reach their goal\, but they do make a unique discovery\, a gentle giant that will be named for the young explorer who described it: Steller’s sea cow. In 1859\, the governor of the Russian territory of Alaska sends his men to recover the skeleton of the massive marine mammal rumored to have vanished a hundred years before. Two years later\, a revered Helsinki professor hires a talented illustrator—a woman!—to make precise drawings of a set of bones sent from afar. \nThe ill-fated beast will help introduce to a skeptical public the concept of human-caused extinction. Finally\, in 1952\, the Museum of Zoology assigns its most talented restorer the task of refurbishing the antique skeleton\, a testimony to the sea cow’s fate that will fire the imaginations of future generations. \nA breathtaking literary achievement and an adventure that crosses continents and centuries\, Beasts of the Sea is a tale of grand ambition\, the quest for knowledge\, and the urge to resurrect what humankind has\, in its ignorance\, destroyed. \nBeasts of the Sea is available in paperback and e-book from Hachette Book Group and from Bookshop.org and other retailers. \n\nRegister
