Ingmar Bergman: A Tribute in Film continues with Wild Strawberries (1958), a film about one man’s nightmares and daydreams. Traveling to accept an honorary degree, Professor Isak Borg (Victor Sjöström) is forced to face his past, come to terms with his faults, and make peace with the inevitability of his approaching death. Through flashbacks and fantasies, dreams and nightmares, Wild Strawberries dramatizes one man’s remarkable voyage of self-discovery, in a richly human masterpiece full of iconic imagery.
A treasure from the golden age of art-house cinema, the film expanded cinema’s treatment of the subconscious, with a masterful performance by Sjöström, one of the great pioneers of Swedish and American silent cinema. It was also one of the films that catapulted Bergman to international acclaim.

On the centenary of Ingmar Bergman’s birth, Scandinavia House presents a tribute to the late artist with screenings of seven films organized by Laurence Kardish (former Senior Curator of Film, MoMA), beginning with a special event with Liv Ullmann, the celebrated actress, director, and partner of Bergman. On September 26, Ullmann joins us to present an introduction to a screening of Bergman’s final film Saraband (2003), the sequel to the iconic Scenes From a Marriage (1974), which returns to Marianne (Ullmann) and Johan (Erland Josephson) thirty years after their divorce. Following the film that evening, Ullman will hold a special discussion with Kardish.
The series continues with a series of six classic Bergman titles that established not only his reputation in America, but contributed to the establishment of an art house cinema in the U.S.
