$60 ($50 ASF Members)

Renowned Scandinavian textile designers and artists Arne Nerjordet and Carlos Zachrison, better known as Arne & Carlos, lead two knitting workshops this fall, exploring the rich tradition of Nordic knitting and teaching participants new techniques—Norwegian Wrist Warmers on September 10, 2016 and Scandinavian Christmas Balls on September 13, 2016.

Winters in Scandinavia are dark and cold, so people spend a lot of time sitting by the warm stove with some handwork. This cheerful Christmas ball is a wonderful winter project for knitters who want to learn two-color knitting or improve their technique.

Participants will need to bring:

  • 131 yards/1.75 ounces of DK weight yarn in two colors of your choosing. Arne & Carlos recommend Schachenmayr Merino Extra Fine 120,  Rowan Pure Superwash DK, or Rowan Super Fine Merino DK
  • 1 set of double pointed needles (DPNs), size U.S. 2.5 (3mm)
  • 1 crochet hook, U.S. D-3 (3 mm)
  • Wool or Acrylic stuffing .07 oz. per ball

Participants should have basic knitting knowledge and be able to knit (there is no purling in this class). This project is good for knitters of all levels.

In 2010, Arne & Carlos’s first craft book, Julekuler (55 Christmas Balls to Knit), became an immediate Norwegian bestseller and consequently went on to become a bestselling book in North America, Europe, and Asia. Today, Arne & Carlos have published 7 books, which are enjoyed by people from all over the world. Their books are available in Norwegian as well as English, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Icelandic, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish.

They have also been on display at The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark and The Gwangju Museum of Modern Art in South Korea. In 2012, to mark Arne & Carlos’s 10th anniversary, The National Museum of Art, Architecture, and Design curated and produced a solo exhibition of the duos’ work. The exhibition was later shown in museums and art galleries all across Norway for three consecutive years.

Arne & Carlos’s creative base is located 170 kilometers north of Oslo, Norway in the mountainous region known as Valdres. Between the lake and the mountains, visitors will find a disused railway station that has been converted into their own eclectic design studio and home. In this idyllic location Arne & Carlos absorb the rich traditions of Scandinavian arts and crafts while adding their own personal inspirations.

Several of Arne & Carlos’s books are available to purchase in the Shop at Scandinavia House. Arne & Carlos will also sign books following each workshop.
