On the occasion of the Arctic Council’s 20th anniversary, the Once and Future Arctic brings together noted Arctic experts to ask: What changes can we anticipate over the next twenty years? How can we plan now to meet future challenges and opportunities?  What approaches hold the greatest promise of making a significant, positive impact on the region in the future?

Founded in 1996, the Arctic Council is the leading intergovernmental forum promoting cooperation, coordination and interaction among the Arctic states, Arctic Indigenous communities and other Arctic inhabitants on common Arctic issues, in particular on issues of sustainable development and environmental protection in the Arctic. For the past 20 years, the Council has regularly produced comprehensive, cutting-edge environmental, ecological and social assessments through its working groups, and has provided a forum for legal negotiation among the eight Arctic states.
