A Perfectly Normal Family

September 29, 2021—7:00 pm9:00 pm

“A film that couldn’t have come at a better time” (Cineuropa) — on September 29, see the new film  A Perfectly Normal Family /En helt almindelig familie (Denmark, 2020; dir. Malou Reymann) in New Nordic Cinema at Scandinavia House!

Eleven-year-old Emma (Kaya Toft Loholt) has a perfectly normal family until one day she learns that her dad, Thomas, is transgender, and wants to live the rest of his life as a woman. Emma is thrown completely off kilter as Thomas makes a rapid transition into Agnete: a woman in stylish dresses who suddenly has no more interest in football. Who is this new father? Can Emma even call Agnete that? As the transition reshapes their family, both father and daughter struggle to hold on to what they had, while accepting that everything has changed. (97 min. In Danish with English subtitles)

“An engagingly sincere picture of good people trying to negotiate barely charted territory to the best of their abilities”—Variety

“The directness and honesty of the storytelling is really affecting…Loholt is so natural and touching as Emma”—The Guardian
