UNRULY | NEW NORDIC CINEMA

March 13—7:00 pm9:15 pm

On March 13, join us for a screening of Unruly (dir. Malou Reymann, Denmark, 2022), a new Danish historical drama about a woman’s struggle to escape forced institutionalization in the 1930s.

In conservative early twentieth-century Denmark, strong-minded Maren is widely considered to be ill-mannered and promiscuous. Amid growing concerns that her “unruly” behavior will infect others, she is sent away to a women’s institution on the small island of Sprogø, where she’s to learn to behave properly. Marin shares a room with Sørine, who has already accepted the conventional narrative that she is unwell and adjusted her behavior accordingly to fit in with society. Sørine is tasked with guiding Maren through Sprogø to help facilitate her rehabilitation, but Maren’s refusal to comply with the system leads to terrible consequences for both women. Inspired by real historical events, Unruly is a powerful reminder of misogyny’s psychic toll.
