Reflecting on the silence, beauty, simplicity and magic of Vilhelm Hammershøi’s poetic universe, internationally-renowned jazz and improvisational artist Nikolaj Hess paints a modern impression of one of Denmark’s most celebrated artists together with his trio, in a mix of compositions and improvised soundscapes.
The concert will be held in the Gallery, giving the audience a chance to sit among the unique works of Hammershøi, which inspired the music.
The classic trio format grand piano, acoustic upright bass and drums and cymbals, concludes the concert series “Impressions of Hammershøi – The Poetry of Silence.”
This concert is organized in collaboration with AFSMK—American Friends of Statens Museum for Kunst.
About Nikolaj Hess
Nikolaj Hess is a New York/Denmark-based pianist, composer, producer, and arranger with more than 100 releases as a bandleader, composer, and producer. Hess is particularly known through works produced in connection with the Nikolaj Hess Trio, Marc Mommaas, Hess/AC/Hess Spacelab, Caroline Hendersen, Hess is More, and Etta Cameron.
He has played and recorded with a long list of international jazz legends in Europe, the U.S., Canada, Israel, and Asia, including Lee Konitz, Benny Golson, Tony Scherr, Kenny Wollesen, Fela Kuti, Greg Hutchinson, Chris Cheek, and Hall Willner. Hess has also composed music for films, including Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia (2011) and Meeres Stille by Juliane Fezer (2013).
