SUMMER JAZZSeries

MoreConcerts

Our popular Summer Jazz Series returns to Scandinavia House! This summer we’re presenting performances from some of Scandinavia’s most talented young jazz musicians, composers, and singers from June 20 through July 11. Join us for a reception on the Volvo Hall terrace starting at 7 PM, followed by the concert at 7:30 PM.

The Mikkel Ploug Trio, featuring Danish guitarist Mikkel Ploug with bassist Jeppe Skovbakke and drummer Sean Carpio, join us for a performance of the melodically strong, harmonically original songs from Ploug’s ever-evolving repertoire. Since forming 14 years ago, the trio have toured in more than 20 countries, including many of the world’s greatest jazz clubs and festivals, and worked with many acclaimed jazz-musicians like American saxophonist Mark Turner, and has recorded 15 albums for renowned jazz labels such as Sunnyside Records (U.S.), Fresh Sound (ES), Songlines (CA) and Whirlwind Recordings (UK).

As a special on this tour, the trio will premier new arrangements of Danish Grawemeyer award-winning composer Bent Sørensen’s Nocturnes.

“Danish guitarist Mikkel Ploug is on his way into the champions league of contemporary jazz. His guitar playing is among the most stylish in the genre.” – Alex Schmitz, Jazz Podium

“Where so many guitarists fall back on bravura displays of technique, Mikkel Ploug treads an alternative path, one where virtuosity is subsumed to the greater aim of tone production and care in shaping the form of compositions.” – All About Jazz

“Ploug is part of a generation of guitarists who absorbed as much from Radiohead as they did from Bill Frisell, so while there is all the openness and adventure of an improviser with his own distinctive language, it is informed by a more rugged, indie-rock sensibility, driven forward by Carpio’s subtle, ever-changing grooves.” —The Irish Times
