The end result of a commissioned project by the International Sámi Film Institute, 7 Sámi Stories features seven incredible new short films by Sápmi’s rising talent from Norway, Sweden and Finland. The films give voice to contemporary Sámi screen storytellers and embody visions of a new generation of Sami filmmakers.

SÁMI BOJÁ/ SÁMI BOY

Directed by Elle Sofie Henriksen (Sápmi, 2015). Mikkel is a reindeer herder, in charge of his family’s entire herd. But his tough exterior hides the chaos within.

GIKSAŠUVVAN EALLI/THE AFFLICTED ANIMAL

Directed by Egil Pedersen (Sápmi, 2015). In a remote area in Norther Norway, a young girl seeks help for her afflicted dog. But other members of her family need help, too: Her mother is lost in her own mind, and her father within his loneliness.

ÁILE JA ÁHKKU/ÁILE AND GRANDMOTHER

Directed by Silja Somby (Sápmi, 2015). Áile and her grandmother are close. Her grandmother teachers her the powers of nature and healing, but Áile has a secret that puts their bong to the ultimate test.

ELLOS SÁPMI/LONG LIVE SÁPMI

Directed by Per Josef Idivuoma (Sápmi, 2015). Based on a true story, Ellos Sápmi is a rebellious comedy about the formation of the first Sámi Parliament as seen through the eyes of the charismatic womanizer Klemet.

Directed by Ann Holmgren (Sápmi, 2015). In this simple love story that defies cultural differences, a man and woman are separated by a river and must break the laws of nature to close the distance.

HILBES BIIGÁ/O .M.G. (OH MÁIGON GIRL)

Directed by Marja Bål Nango (Sápmi, 2015). Beneath the midnight sun, two teenage girls seeking adventure in their small village decide to hitchhike out of town.

IĐITSILBA/BURNING SUN

Directed by Elle Márjá Eira (Sápmi, 2015). Majjen wears a very special hat. Shaped like a horn, the hat is of a kind worn by all women in her tribe, and is very precious. But when men of the church decide the hat resembles the devil’s horns, Majjen fears it will soon be destroyed.
