The Scandinavian American Theatre Company (SATC) presents a new adaptation of Ingmar Bergman’s Scenes from a Marriage by American playwright Emily Mann. Originally made for Swedish television, Scenes from a Marriage is the story of the gradual breakup of a marriage, told in six episodes spanning a twenty-year period. Johan and Marianne, who have been married for thirteen years, live happily with their two daughters. The outwardly solid relationship starts to crumble when Johan falls in love with a young woman, Paula.

SATC’s staged reading of Scenes from a Marriage is a collaboration with Scandinavia House and the Consulate General of Sweden in New York and a New York contribution to The Ingmar Bergman International Theatre Festival 2016 presented by the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, Sweden.

About the playwright

Emily Mann is a multi-award winning director and playwright. She has served as the Artistic Director of McCarter Theatre since 1990 where she has overseen over 125 productions. Under Mann’s leadership, McCarter was honored with the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theater in 1994 and celebrated the 2013 Best Play Tony Award win for Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike by Christopher Durang—a play commissioned, developed, and premiered at McCarter.

A winner of the Dramatists Guild Hull-Warriner Award, Obie and Peabody awards, and a Guggenheim fellowship, Ms. Mann has received Tony nominations as both a director and a playwright. In 2002 she received an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from Princeton University. In 2011 Ms. Mann was named the National Theatre Conference’s Person of the Year. She completed her BA in English Literature at Harvard University (Radcliffe College) in 1974 and her MFA in Directing from the University of Minnesota in 1976.
