New York City-based artists loadbang and TAK Ensemble join forces to perform the work of the Icelandic composer collective Errata. Both groups have long been fascinated by the rich Icelandic composition scene, and are excited to have the opportunity to enrich their repertoires with these new works.
The composers of Errata — Bára Gísladóttir, Finnur Karlsson, Halldór Smárason, Haukur Þór Harðarson, and Petter Ekman — will each have a piece performed by both loadbang and TAK Ensemble, and loadbang will also perform a work by Icelandic-American composer David Franzson. Each evening will include performances by both ensembles.
About the Performers
ERRATA
Errata is an artist collective consisting of the composers Bára Gísladóttir, Finnur Karlsson, Halldór Smárason, Haukur Þór Harðarson and Petter Ekman. The founders of the group met while studying at the Iceland Academy of the Arts. The group’s objective is to provide a platform for young composers to present themselves and their art as widely as possible, as well as promoting new and innovative ways in composition and distribution. Group members strive to promote each other’s work on the widest basis, helping each other to market themselves and the group itself, and finally hosting joint events with the member’s works.
LOADBANG
New York City-based new music chamber group loadbang is building a new kind of music for mixed ensemble of trumpet, trombone, bass clarinet, and baritone voice. Since they were founded in 2008, they have been praised as ‘cultivated’ by The New Yorker, ‘an extra-cool new music group’ and ‘exhilarating’ by the Baltimore Sun, ‘inventive’ by the New York Times and a ‘formidable new-music force’ by Time Out NY. loadbang has premiered more than 200 works, written by members of the ensemble, emerging artists, and today’s leading composers. Not content to dwell solely in the realm of notated music, loadbang is known for its searing and unpredictable improvisations, exploring the edges of instrumental and vocal timbre and technique, and blurring the line between composed and extemporaneous music.
TAK ENSEMBLE
TAK is a quintet that delivers energetic and virtuosic performances of contemporary classical music. Their debut album “Ecstatic Music: TAK plays Taylor Brook” was released by New Focus Recordings in September 2016, to critical acclaim; it was featured as Q2 Music’s Album of the Week by WQXR, and was listed in the Top 10 Classical Albums of 2016 by The Boston Globe, which praised the “young, fearless players… fluid grace and confidence.” Dedicated to the commissioning of new works and direct collaboration with composers and other artists, TAK promotes ambitious programming at the highest level, fostering engagement both within the contemporary music community and the artistic community at large. TAK has performed throughout New York City in venues such as Roulette, the DiMenna Center for Classical Music, and Issue Project Room. In the summer of 2016, they worked with the Errata Collective of composers in Iceland to premiere a program of works in Isafjordur and at the Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik.
