On January 17, see the riotous new Icelandic documentary Band (dir. Álfrún Örnólfsdóttir, Iceland, 2022)!

A rockumentary in the vein of This is Spinal Tap and Leningrad Cowboys Go America, Band tells the story of three electro punk musicians who give themselves a deadline by which to go hard or go home. Director Álfrún Örnólfsdóttir and her bandmates Saga and Hrefna of the Post Performance Blues Band are tired of getting paid in beer at hole-in-the-wall venues. Staring down 40 and juggling motherhood with their artistic pursuits, the three friends decide they must either achieve stardom within a year or break up for good.

A rollicking but serious parable about ambition, artmaking, and gender roles, Band shows what happens to women with talent but not time in a youth-obsessed industry.
