Following her acclaimed Girl Picture (2022), director Alli Haapasalo takes the female body’s built-in violence and imbues that bottled up fury into 19th-century Finland on a little island called Seili. The year is 1898, and Amanda (Marketta Tikkanen) arrives at the institution on the island of Seili in the Finnish archipelago. She has been committed after living a wandering, decadent life, marked by episodes of “madness” once a month caused by severe menstrual pain. Amanda considers her stay on the island strictly temporary, but as she begins to form bonds with the other women, doubt takes root. Marketta Tikkanen shines in the lead role, supported by Alma Pöysti, Krista Kosonen and Aamu Milonoff, who together create a richly layered gallery of female fates in a genuinely affecting drama.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Alli Haapasalo is a Finnish director and writer. Her third feature film Girl Picture (2022) won the Audience Award at Sundance Film Festival and was selected to the Generation section of the Berlinale. Girl Picture received four Finnish Film Awards, for best film, best director, best screenplay and best editing in 2023. It is Haapasalo’s passion to tell strong female driven stories. Haapasalo has an MFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, as well as a BA from Aalto University’s School of Film, Television and Scenography. She was awarded the Finland Award in 2022 and the Nordisk Film Award in 2020.
Marketta Tikkanen is a Finnish actress who graduated from Tampere University in 2019. Marketta has appeared in films, on television and in theatre productions. Her performances range from supporting roles to leading parts. Marketta Tikkanen is known for e.g. The Unknown Soldier (2017), Bordertown (2016) and Nordic Law (2020). She has become well-known for her roles in Finnish TV dramas in past years and continues to be a rising talent in the Nordic entertainment industry.
