Join us for an evening with Faroese knitwear designer and wool advocate, Sissal Kristiansen! The founder of Shisa Brand and producer of The Wool Islands invites you to experience the textures, behavior, and history of wool and yarn knitting from the Faroe Islands, while showing how heritage stitches and coarse wool became the modern, wearable garments of today.
An ancient Faroese proverb says: “Ull er Føroya Gull” or “Wool is the Gold of the Faroe Islands.” This truly reflects the traditional way of life in the Faroes.
In the first part of the event, Sissal will discuss the lived stories behind wool and knitting culture – providing many accounts from women 70-170 years ago, while bridging the histories with present day innovation and adaptation. A “wool-tasting” will include a selection of Faroese yarn and wool for touch and comparison, finished garments and hand-crafted swaps/samples for guests to feel and discuss. Patterns of Shisa Brand garments will be available for sale.
A knitting workshop will follow the presentation, and space is limited. Here, participants bring their own yarn and needles to try out Faroese patterns and design.
