This symposium, complementing the exhibition Peder Balke: Painter of Northern Light  on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art April 10 through July 9, 2017, will include presentations by prominent Scandinavian and American scholars, exploring various aspects of the artist’s work and its place within the larger cultural and historical context.

The symposium is organized by the American-Scandinavian Foundation in coordination with The Metropolitan Museum of Art and independent scholar Dr. Knut Ljøgodt.

Peder Balke: Painter of Northern Light is the first exhibition in the United States to focus on Norwegian landscape and marine painter Peder Balke (1804-1887)—a singular, visionary artist. The exhibition and symposium offer audiences the opportunity to explore the work of an artist who “focused on those aspects of art and nature that inspire awe known as the Sublime.”

More information to follow.

The symposium is funded in part by a generous grant from Sparebankstiftelsen DNB NOR.
