Directed by Elmo Nüganen (Estonia, 2015). This war epic from Estonian director Elmo Nüganen transports the audience to the center of the feverish horrors of World War II. Situated in the path of two warring armies—the Soviets and the Nazis—Estonians were enlisted into both armies, shipped to the fronts, and forced to fight against at each other.

1944 addresses a national trauma that Estonia continues to process to this day. Nüganen has said that more than anything else, his film aims at atonement.
