On April 5 in celebration of the opening of Nordic Echoes — Tradition in Contemporary Art at Scandinavia House, join us for an opening day celebration! From 11 AM-2 PM, artist Beth Kraus will lead a birchbark-weaving workshop. At 3 PM, folklorist Victoria Stewart (Assistant Director, Wayne State University Humanities Center) will moderate a discussion with four artists featured in the exhibition: Kjetil “K.J.” Groven, Beth Kraus, Peter “Pekka” Olson, and Sonja Peterson. A wood carving demonstration by artist Peter “Pekka” Olson from Tapiola, MI and a reception will follow the panel.
On view through August 2, Nordic Echoes is the first major traveling exhibition of contemporary Nordic folk arts and cultural traditions from the Upper Midwest, showcasing the malleability and persistence of Nordic folk art in the U.S. Featuring artists living and practicing within the pan-Nordic regions of the Upper Midwest, the exhibition explores themes of identity and belonging as well as how traditions have been shaped by their U.S.-based environments, both in materials used and in their reflection of local communities.
