Founded by Swedish musician Oskar Stenmark, the trio Piatruba (which stands for piano, trumpet, and bass) explores the music of Stenmark’s ancestors.

Their repertoire consists of polkas, walking tunes, and waltzes—music that has been played in Dalarna for several hundred years.

About Piatruba

Piatruba was formed in 2012 by Swedish musician Oskar Stenmark with the goal of exploring the music of his ancestors in Gärdebyn, Rättvik, and Dalarna. Oskar’s great-grandfather, Hans, and his brother Olle Börjes, were both highly regarded fiddlers who played during dances, weddings, and other celebrations. Their repertoire consisted of polkas, walking tunes, and waltzes–music that has been played in Dalarna for several hundred years.

Piatruba (piano, trumpet, and bass) approaches these melodies with a modern expression. Oskar’s father recorded the fiddle music with his tape recorder in the 1960’s. This recording forms the foundation of Piatruba and provides inspiration for the group. The music tells stories about an old tradition, and Piatruba brings the music from past to present and into the future.
